The Boo-Boys are an embarrassment to Arsenal Football Club

Posted on January 23, 2012 by admin

Unfair on Arshavin, Unfair on Arsenal FC (By S.H)

The home stadium erupted in loud BOOS in protest over Wenger‘s decision to substitute Oxlade-Chamberlain for Andrey Arshavin. Even Robin van Persie appeared to show his dissent over the manager’s decision. The Ox had played a marvellous game, and I too, was disappointed to see him taken off. I agree that Wenger made a mistake, but the reactions from the fans were not only unfair on the manager and Arsenal FC, but it was mostly embarrassing and unjust on Arshavin. Booing at Wenger for engaging Arshavin to play is booing the Russian the same.

Football is a beautiful game because we see a range of passionate emotions. From the lows of losing the UEFA Cup Final to Galatasaray in 2000, to the triumphs of the Invincibles & Henry’s comeback goal against Leeds. We’ve been through tough times in the past 6 years with no trophies, limited funds due to 390M stadium debt, a lack of world class signings and the sale of key players. Currently, we are financially stable with a surplus of funds for new players and the fans aren’t happy with Wenger for his frugal ways.

This is all understandable and although I’m a Wenger fan through and through, I do agree with the majority that the manager needs to acquire world class talent if he is to challenge the big guns of Europe. But are we so strong on this view, that it has led many fans to abuse, boo, protest and vituperate at Wenger and Arshavin?

I do hope we understand, sometimes our passion for the team to succeed, can lead us to do silly things, and in hindsight appear embarrassing and shameful. When the camera focus was on Arshavin in the midst of the booing, you could see in his eyes and facial expression that he felt unwanted and unsupported. This is disgraceful.

This is world wide defamation of our beloved club. This is NOT THE ARSENAL WAY!!! How is a player or even manager to perform to his best abilities if the home fans won’t support them? What is the point of having HOME CROWD ADVANTAGE when your supporters turn on you?

Arsenal fans really need to stop and think! Instead of telling Wenger he’s ignorant and delusional, maybe it is those who are booing the team that are such. I love Arsenal FC and I will NEVER BOO my club! What about you?

LAST TIME I CHECKED, BOOING IS BAD SPORTSMANSHIP.

Do you teach your kids to boo their own coach or even the other team when playing sport?

Aren’t children taught these simple rules of sportsmanship when growing up?

If we, as adults can’t practice what we preach, then doesn’t that make us hypocrites?

So now are we saying that having freedom of expression and emotional passion[which is just a poor excuse & scapegoat] allows us to BOO and support bad sportsmanship?

It’s like saying something bad happened to me and now i have the right to inflict pain on others.

Thank you S.H for another balanced and comprehensive piece!

why is every one going on about what wenger has done , thats in the past now, yes it was great to win the double, the fa cup , the premier league, and being invincible, but that was 8 years ago now, what has he done since 2004- 2005, just sell sell sell the best palyers, bought in crap players, and made arsenal fc a laughing stock, now is what we should be concerned about, the fans pay thier money every home match, and they have the right to express thier concerns, and mistakes that wenger makes,

    @cookiegooner

the point now is not about the past. it’s about fans booing their own team at home. i’m sorry to say but sometimes i wish the privileged fans that are able to watch the team weak in weak out could try harder to raise the atmosphere at the emirates. i may be living thousands of miles away but sometimes it’s better to watch through the television then to make a fool out of yourselves.

the loudest was when the substitution of the ox with the booing and that says it all about our current home supporters. how i wish we have the atmosphere like swansea’s.

@S.H why are you go back and eat your word few weeks ago we are on the same path. Why why why almighty s h saying this, the fan have every right to express their feelings in which ever way they choose or thru any medium. This so cal manager is taking we the fan for granted u know how SH dont you? In 2010 summer transfer board make money available for the man to purchase players you know what this man did instead he return the money all in the name of having big squard. Many many like that till this moment so what did you expect? Lots fan drop interest in this klub b’cos of this manager and his foolish phylosopy. And he was not the only manager who has done great for his klub there are lots that has done even more than what he has done and his achievements for their klub.

We pay 50-60 pound a ticket to go and see the club we love. Therefore I believe we have the right to boo if we feel a bad decision has been made, like it was on Sunday.

Id like to just say as well, I go to the Emirates a lot, and NEVER before have I heard most of the Arsenal fans boo a decision. This has to highlight that MANY of the Arsenal fans are unhappy. So please stop trying to say we are in the wrong when all we want is to see Arsenal challenging for trophies again.

  8. Big Gun says:

@ymoola and asif. Indeed. As an Arsenal fan I’m tired of first of all being lied to by the board and Wenger. Hill-Wood makes a statement that there IS enough funds available for players to be brought in. He still said he has no idea where this ridiculous rumor came from, that there aren’t. But then we see a different side of the story with Arsene, always promising quality buys, but he never ever actually buys. If we hadn’t got thrashed by Manure beginning of the season, I can bet he would have never of bought any of those panic buys. What even boils my blood further is how all the fans knew at that time that we desperately needed reinforcements at the back and replacements for Fabregas and Nasri. But ‘Wenger knows best’, ofcourse. He waits till we raped by a few teams then he decides on the last day to buy a few sub par players. FFS what kind of logic is that?

Then Wenger has made stupid team selections, in game decisions and subs for a while now. The game on Sunday was not the first. 7 trophy less seasons and things are getting worse. We have 3 maybe 4 teams BETTER than us in the league, where only a few years ago WE WERE THE BEST, and possibly the best in Europe too. What the hell happened in the last few years? Surely a great manager that all these AKB’s profess Wenger to be, especially with the resources Arsenal have at it’s disposal would have ensured us to be a top team up until now?

The boos were a culmination not only of the poor decision to replace our potential match winning player, but of all the shenanigans Wenger has put us through the last 2-3 seasons. Fans are sick and tired of Wenger stuffing it up and that was the only way they can let him know of their disapproval of the way things have run.

@Asif SOB, First of all, not nice to make a mockery of peoples name on the forum. Quite hypocritical concerning the topic and what you posted. Secondly, if Wenger hadn’t made such a lousy, stupid, illogical decision, there wouldn’t have been boos would there? As I said, Wenger has been doing these sort of things for a while now, and the fans have noticed. That boo was a culmination of boos before that the fans held in at the time. Sunday, it all came out. Frustration and utter loss of respect for Wenger. I for one am glad it happened, because atm Arsenal is run by a proud and deluded old man who needs a wake up call.

What embarrasses the club is predictably pathetic performances by players who make the same mistakes week in week out while the manager tells us he doesn’t need any new players to win the league. That’s what got the opposition fans laughing at us, not booing bad management decisions in the ground.

  16. G-Force says:

I am sorry but the most hypocritical comment comes from “the no.10 shirt”.

So then it is ok to boo ex-players, refereee decision’s or even the opposing team!?! Because this is what is happening in football all the time as well NOT only booing one’s own team.

That is outright hypocritical what you have written and if you feel so strongly about teaching kids simple sportsmanship, then ALL types of booing should be banned at the stadiums.

by the way, just an advice to you. If you have kid(s), you might want to keep them far away from football stadiums as there is not only booing going on but also lots of expletives being thrown around.

whatever values you may have taught your kid(s) at home, will be thrown out the door.

  18. Wenger is a joke says:

This was not embarrasing and shameful.

The fans booed the manager. Why? Instead of beating around the bush look at facts. Wengers team have had the same problem year after year. The same on the field issues are not addressed. Is this the sign of a good manager? I don’t think it is. Managers at other clubs that did not address issues that exist year after year would be gone.

While Wenger ignores the training regime of his team and continues on his quest to make money from the 1st team of Arsenal, and while at the same time those very booing fans continue to pay extortionate prices, do you really think what they did was shameful?

This is years of frustration pouring out at an arrogant manager that has taken the fans for a ride.

Before talking frugal, remember this – it was not the fans who said big signings please – it was actually Wenger and Ivan that started that talk. And now the fans are spoilt? I don’t think so!

  19. John O'C says:

I’m getting tired of writing about this but the glaringly obvious is that Wenger has without doubt seen his best days, he is a stubborn and spent force who is bringing us down every season along with the frugal business orientated board.

If he had an ounce of dignity he would retaliate and revolt against the board when they sanction player sales at the first opportunity of a good price but know Mr Wenger (Economic Degree holder btw) loves nothing more than balancing the books and demonstrating what a great economist he is to the detriment of AFC.

Its just like competing in F1, if you are not evolving every year, making crucial adjustments to keep up with the fastest cars where do you think you’ll end up finishing? exactly.

We are a club in terminal decline in terms of competing for top honours. Slowly but very surely we are following the Liverpool route but at least they are prepared to invest in their squad-albeit poorly.

  21. Osaz says:

It is a shame booing your own team especially in a home fixture but lets be frank, this was out of frustration and while we are discussing the rational behind it now the stadium erupted in a split second. So the fans did not make a decision to boo or not, it was reflex and that explain a lot as to how crazy the decision was. Thousands of fans seem to have known what the manager was stubborn to admit and the fans were right cos we eventually lost. These fans who were booing are the same people mad about the club, take a day out to support their team, pay for ticket and expenses only to end up in the loosing end. The problem is Ashavin form has been a bit bad lately and this was a massive game.
The fans gets the stick from other clubs supporters. The last we met we came home in shame after an 8-2 humiliation. We had to win this game. While it is wrong for the fans to boo their own side it is equally very wrong for the club to be as stubborn as they are right now and keep the purse tight. We have now been warned by Hillwood we be fine if we have no shot @ Champ League next term. That is an insult to the fans. If we were making the same money as Sunderland it will be ok. As it is now we are not doing well enough. We should get a good creative mid NOW else we will fall off. We keep looking @ spurs but the battle now is not with them. Its either us or Chelsea for the 4th spot and unless we start winning very soon we be out.
Even Wenger might just leave if we don’t qualify. I read on our homepage the other day Wenger saying Champ league FT is a must and anything less is unacceptable. A direct head on collision with Hillwood’s view.

im an arsenal fan thru and thru. i love the club. ive been a red member for as long as ive been able to. id love a season ticket but the waiting list is so long i doubt i will get 1 in my lifetime. i agree wiv the guy asif, i think that was his name. if you guys that are lucky enough to have a season continue to boo our managers decisions and at the same time put even more pressure on our players, like arshavin. who for all his faults is not complaining and is playing week in week out!!! not injured!!! like so many. give the guys a break, give arsene a break and start supporting your team. maybe if we all created the kind of atmosphere you get at the etihad, upton park or anfield, then maybe we cud get another 5 or 10% out of our players who are quite clearly lacking some confidence right now. im not slagging off our season ticket holders, they are the lifeblood of our club and i respect each and every one of you. but should any of you feel so pissed off that you have to boo and sing anti arsene songs, then ill be more than happy to give you my name and address and would gladly buy your season ticket off you and come along to the emirates every week and sing and cheer my beloved arsenal on.

I think the BOOING is just a way of telling Arsene, “You are ruining our beloved Arsenal”. It was not just for the irrational thinking that led to the sub but other things that have happened in the past 6-7 years i.e Transfers, or lack thereof. I wouldn’t say that the booing is right or wrong but that is really a sign that should be sent to Wenger that he isn’t doing what’s right for our beloved Arsenal. As much as I love Arsenal, It hurts me to see my team slide down and lower expectations, season in, season out. All this can be avoided quite easily. Why does Arsene still have stupid faith in the likes of Diaby? Why didn’t he adequately replace El Capitan? And so many other things.
But the reality is we can’t get anyone better than Wenger. AFC for LIFE!
