The Christmas Day airplane bomber was an Arsenal fan!

Posted on January 01, 2010 by admin

The Nigerian man that attempted to bomb the American plane on Christmas Day lived in London, and studied at the University College.

In an article this evening from the Middle Eastern Financial Times, it was also revealed that he was an Arsenal fan!

The article said: Mr Abdulmutallab, described as competent in Arabic, had left Yemen in 2005, heading to London to study mechanical engineering with business finance at University College London.

His arrival there came only a few weeks after the July 7 deadly bombings on the London transport system and the failed attacks of July 21.

But as police comb his upmarket London flat, and British authorities conduct extensive interviews with the people who knew him, nothing has yet emerged publicly to suggest that Mr Abdulmutallab had fallen under the influence of extremists in Britain. The saga has, however, reignited the debate about whether London is a hotbed for radical Islam.

Those who knew Mr Abdulmutallab during his stay in the British capital describe a quiet young man, devout in his faith but far from extreme – a similar description given by his fellow students in Yemen.

“Unfathomable,” was the reaction of 24-year-old Qasim Rafiq who studied with the Nigerian and preceded him as president of UCL’s Islamic society.

Ironically, the first event that Mr Rafiq organised as Islamic society president – and the first Mr Abdulmutallab attended as a student – came in response to the July 2005 terrorist attacks and was entitled “Terrorism versus Islam”. The society used the gathering to denounce terrorism as an un-Islamic political act – a view, says Mr Rafiq, that Mr Abdulmutallab shared at the time.

Mr Abdulmutallab’s tutors at UCL also say he gave them “no cause for concern”.

Mr Rafiq describes how he and Mr Abdulmutallab regularly went out for dinner, bonding over their shared faith and a passion for Arsenal Football Club.

Mr Abdulmutallab returned to Yemen in August 2009, entering the country on a student visa and re-enrolling at the Sana’a Institute for the Arabic Language, which is described as a tolerant seat of learning attracting both Christians and Muslims.

By the time of the Nigerian’s second visit to Yemen, al-Qaeda’s activity there had increased markedly. That threat, combined with a rebellion in the north, a secessionist movement in the south and a collapsing economy, has prompted growing warnings that the country is becoming a failed state.

Well, what do you know!

  6. john says:

I am a Nigerian and truely ashamed to this bastard. He had all the riches and previllages that only a few of us could dream of. Yet he managed to find himself under the influence of these ‘religious’ nuts. Most Nigerians love the US and its people for what they stands for.

  7. musa inalegwu says:

good people great nation, that’s the logo of our great nation.that thing is not meant to be called a 9ja boy nor a fan of arsenal football club which is the best club in the world.he,s jst from one of those useless club which want our down fall.up gunners 4live.

Arsenal 3 WestHam 1…its hard to get a clean sheet when Almunia is in Goal.

  10. Aniruddh says:

There are all sorts of people around the globe all we can do is ignore the bad lot and concentrate our efforts in making the world a better place for all.

  11. John says:

Jerry, I understand the Nigerian zest for live and the abhorence of killing one’s self for any cause. But this chap came under the influence of foreigners who did not care for our way of life and did not believe in the sanctity of human lives. There is no need to specullate about a set-up which only serves to lighten the load of his crime. He went into this by courting his masters.

  12. Samuel says:

So what if a demented Nigerian Muslim is an Arsenal supporter or whatever ,what does this have to do with anything conected to Arsenal football club ,or maybe the news
papers don,t have any material yet for the new season absolu
    te rubbish.

  13. international tv online says:

I find it ironic that everyone is blaming the FAA for the security breach, even though the ‘christmas day bomber’ boarded the plane in a completely different country! How does that make sense??
