Theo Walcott Wants To Play Up Front

Posted on September 24, 2011 by admin

Theo Walcott has held talks with Arsene Wenger about switching positions from right wing to a central striking role and believes he can offer so much more to the team in such a role.

Speaking yesterday Walcott said, “I had a meeting with the boss and explained my point of view. He knew the conversation would come up and was very happy to talk about it. He says he’ll give me a chance there at the right time, and I’m dying for it to happen, but he knows exactly what he is doing and obviously I trust him.

There has been lots of Gunners fans on the forums suggesting such a move for Walcott long before now. He went on to say, “I believe I can give so much more to the team playing up front, with the runs I can make off the ball, and I just love hitting the back of the net as well.’

It will be interesting to see if Walcott gets his wish starting today at home against Bolton. What do you think guys. Do you want to see Theo up front?

Well, imagine if Theo in up front it will be a refreshment since RVP is also getting older. Eden Hazard could be fill up for the left wing and Ryo/Arshavin to take over the right. Arteta, Wilshere and Song in the middle. Cahill, Varmaelen as the main CB and Gibbs and Sagna.. deadly..

    GOONNERS FOREVAAA!!

If he could improve his crossing then he would be a great winger and i feel that is exactly what he should do.

Opinions divided. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 6

  5. Gooner fresh says:

I’m for seeing Theo up front with rvp. Sub him for park in the second half if he’s not performing well. Put Ox in his place with gerv on the left in a 4-4-2/4-1-2-1-2 hybrid with song and Ramsey/arteta providing the mid def. and offense respectively. I can only hope kos and mert will be on the same page in their defending and that someone well be determined to clear on EVERY set piece we defend. Up gunners, we must start the run soon

  6. Charlie says:

He was 100/1 to be top scorer a few weeks ago and i considered having a punt on it. Now he’s probably 200/1 but it doesn’t look likely because the competition, particularly from players at United and City, looks too good. He does have the ability to time his runs, a calm finish and obviously plenty of pace so he could be a top striker. His first touch isn’t as good as RvP, Bergkamp, Henry or other World Class strikers but it’s ok. I think that his technique and his heading would need to improve if he was to be a world class striker but his pace and the timing of his runs will allow him to find space in the area so he’d score a few goals.

Definitely give him a chance. I see so much Thierry Henry in his finishing. I’m not saying he is as good as, or is the next Thierry Henry, but I see a lot of similarities. His finishes are clinical.

His goal at Shakhtar Donetsk is so Henry. Left wing, early strike, sidefoot, far past and goal.

If only he had a left foot, that split second getting it onto his right boot is the diference between a goal and a missed opportunity. I`m in agreement with `Gooner fresh` give him a go and sub him with Park if it doesn`t work, but he`ll need more than one chance so it could become a semi regular rotation. Also, RVP is bound to need a rest at some stage,so he and Park could form a partnership.

  11. Aldo says:

Now now..lets all get a bit serious here. Walcott is a good runner. Period. Nothing more nothing less. He is nowhere near rpv in tearms of finishing. 9 out of 10 he will screw up the last ball whether be a pass or shot. But if he would improve? Than he has firm ground to become a striker. But honestly, a good striker doesnt need to talk loud about his desires..seriously Theo..dont.
    Cheers

  12. walcott gat pace but i dnt tink he has a chance up front wit a fit and in form RVP.even wit d 4-4-2.b4 persie takes a first a second possibly a third, walcott’s patience has droped.

His crosses are hardly better than Sagna’s but he is our current highest scorer in all competitions (along with RVP) …the choice seems easy

  14. on d second tought TW and RVP.could make dat strong partnership up front only if persie’s tricks and flicks keep going true and theo can time his run to perfection.

  15. Gooner says:

Aldo maybe you shouldn’t speak either! Theos position is a striker that’s where he player until he came to arsenal! He hasa left and right foot he’s proved that and how many times did he assist van Persie from the wing at the end of tge season! So many negative gooners so depressing to read! I personal think it’s good Walcott has stepped up and said something towards a change shows maturity!

  16. elboy says:

I think theo is a natural striker and once he is in that role n starts scoring he won’t stop, I hav followed him frm his southhampton days and he is a striker not a winger

not many in the league scores more than theo frm the wing yet still he always gets stick for tryin to do a job out of his natural position

If he is given the chance u will see him consistantly score goals for fun but be patient as he may not hit the ground running as he has been out of tht position for a while n wud of been good for him to hav had the oppotunity in pre season

  17. Wenger is a joke says:

Aldo, Theo is actually scoring from wide already. Get your facts straight.

  18. Charlie says:

By making these comments he shoots himself in the foot a bit. He’ll be a back-up player as striker while he’s currently first choice as a winger. If he’s willing to take that step down fair play to him

  19. DrumGooner says:

Theo is NOT a winger. You can see by the way he plays he was born to be a striker. He had a great goals to game ratio last season before he got injured. He can play on the wing but his best comes from being central. I think its just Stubborn Wenger who doesn’t want to try him out up front. I think Theo will end up leaving if he doesn’t get his chance. He gets unfairly critisised in my opinion, both for Arsenal and for England. Has potential to be a class Striker. Once he gets up there and his confidence grows so will his ability. Play him infront of Van Persie like Bergkamp and Henry used to do in a 4411 type setup.

  20. tobechukwu says:

i think that idea isn’t good because he’s this kind of player that keep on driving ball.
so i don’t think he can feature the striking role unless he’s matured a enough, with this ways he plays ,no i doubt he cannot play it .
he’s only falling n love in the position thinking it’s very easy to play.
mr WENGER, if you want to test him on the position then, try him on any competition like CALLING-CUP& FA-CUP.
but the fact is i doubt of him playing the position of RVP.

I always see Walcott as a striker, but in the game against Bolton, he made some great crosses (both high and low) and missed a golden scoring opportunity. Perhaps Wenger has a point.
