Thomas Vermaelen set to cover for injured Santos against Everton
Although Arsene Wenger played a second string team in last night’s 3-1 defeat at Olympiakos, Arsenal still managed to sustain an injury to one of their first-team players.
Lukas Fabianski was taken off with a cut during the first half, but the only remaining left-back at Arsenal, Andre Santos, was taken off with an ankle injury which leaves the Gunners with some more defensive problems.
Arsene Wenger said after the game: “Fabianski felt a deep cut on the knee and Santos suffered a bad ankle injury. He looks like he will be out for a while. We have Gibbs coming back in two to three weeks. Hopefully Santos will not be too long but, for Saturday against Everton, he looks to be short. We have as well Vermaelen who can play in his position.”
Arsenal fans can only be happy that Vermaelen has returned to fitness, but Wenger will be desperately hoping that Arsenal don’t suffer any more injuries in defence ahead of the busy Christmas period.

AW really messed it up by playing Santos and Verm in Greece, what was happening in his head is difficult to explain. If he now plays Verm on the left it will be the second idiotic decision of the week. Let him please stay in the middle and use Miquel on LB, the boy did very well and will be good enough against Everton. If Verm moves left it will mean Kos in the middle I guess and who will play RB? Not that Djourou clown I hope, would be a shocker after yesterday

Great, that means we will have to rely on Djoure or Squid for RB, as no doubt Koss and Per will be playing CB. Please Wenger bring back Bartley from loan. He is far better than laurel and hardy. Or even bring Song back in defense with Per, put Koss on the right, then play Frimpong in Song’s normal position. Djoure and Squillaci are a huge liability to our team.

Oh no let’s hope this won’t be an avalanche of injuries at Arsenal waiting to happen. We are the most unluckiest team with injuries every year!
Losing Santos just when he’s finding his feet in the EPL is a real disappointment. Kieren Gibbs will be back in 3 weeks but as much as I rate him, he just seems to be fragile and susceptible to getting muscled out of play. Plus he hasn’t been playing much football which could be bad news for Arsenal. Vermaelen is still ok for the LB position but I’ve always preferred him playing Cb with Kozzie.
Does this injury then push Wenger in finding a new LB in January? My belief is he probably won’t with options in Gibbs,Verminator and Miquel, but any fan would welcome a quality name in the LB role from the winter transfer.
Could Wenger then add a new striker, attacking midfielder and left back in the new year? Who knows. What do you guys think?

Miguel did okay at LB last night so we can dwefinitely try him, but the PL is another story.
Everyone had a bad game last night and i mean everyone.
Someone needs to advise AOC that we know he has talent and he has plenty of time to prove it.
I think i counted two times when he actually passed the ball.
all through the match he continuously tried to go past players even when outnumbered 5-1.

Djourou is a CLOWN as Alex stated! The boy couldn’t defend an ant biting his toe! He just lacks the intelligent read of the game. Being mobile for 6ft3 is the only reason Wenger has kept him. Besides that, he looks so DOPEY that it wouldn’t surprise me if Wenger had to tie his shoe laces for him. He plays like he’s got both laces tied to each other! Wenger, please help this boy!

As soon as the team begins to find it’s feet, wenger comes in to add more difficulties. Immagine risking your only fit left back? That must be the most stupid decision any manager has ever made. Maybe he sees that we have been getting away with the right back problems he now sees the need to extend it To the left. What the f*** is wrong with that french man?

great . . . just great. alguds im sure per and kos will do fine with the solid vermsta running the D on the left flank. have some faith in the team, yes we get waaay too many injuries but thats football u just have to deal with it and work around it. i thnk playin santos in CL was a good idea as he needs more experience; its just bad luck he got injured as no1 could have predicted that tbh

Lets not panic yet. there are not many teams that can bring in one of the best left backs in the world as third choice. remember tv is his countrys first choice left back and only their 4th choice cetre back. also last night whilst blame was being directed at the keepers squillaci djourou chamak arshavin and wenger; vermaelen had probably his worst match in an arsenal shirt. i said before the game we should have started with tv at left back giving him 45 and bringing on santos at half time.

Guyz ds is pretty aweful but its not de end of de world.I was equally shocked yday wen I saw TV5 & Santos in de Team list!Well,we still hv 3 sub Defenders he can shuffle wth,out of these 3,one(Miquel is barely manageable,at least he did ok wen he came in for Santos yday),while de rest 2 are completely useless!Now lets live de issue of how he’s going to shuffle de bck to him Wenger,whose stupid idea caused de problem in de 1st place,he broke it let him fix it!Smtimes I thnk ds guy reasons wth his …….!Wat sort of a Mngr thnks of fairplay or respct INSTEAD OF INJURIES TO UR SQUAD IN A USELESS GAME! I follow this site a lot but have never commented, that said I notice a lot of people are blind to see including Mr Wenger!!! That most injuries are ankle injuries surely this is down to our training, recovery time, physio etc. understood other teams have ankle injuries but not as much as us. point two Arshavin and Chamakch need to go simple, the Russian plays like he doesn’t want to play for the red and white and as for Chamakh I have more talent in my little toe. Point three, don’t be fooled Wenger isn’t buying in January. So let’s pray for no more injuries and that our second string steps up their game when called upon.

Lets not panic I am sure something will be sorted out. The last thing we would want is to panic.
Let’s just support the team and we are sure it will be sorted out.
The mistake is done and we cannot undo it now. My worry was TV thank god he is ok. The Olmpiakos were playing really rough.
Atleast most of the players have come out without injury apart from Santos and atleast one back up Goal Keeper is ok my god I hope we do not line up with more injuries.
Just keep the fingers cross.

Santos only played because of a problem with registrations. Martin Angha was due to play, and players aged under 21 do not need to be registered if they have been at the club for two years, however Angha is two months short of this, thus Wenger was forced to play Santos as Miquel is not fully fit.

AW shd stop using Marte to pair him up with TV5, instead of Kosy.when TV5 is paired with Kossy he move freely helping in the midfield and attacking. unlike when he is with Per,he looks locked at the back most of the time, . He trusts not Per.when every body comes from injury I pray that AW uses the following provisional line-up ;

Hello fellow gooners. What a blow to lose Andre Santos just as he’s starting to settle. I’m still scratching my head as to why Wenger played him and Verm in a pointless match?! Anyway I’d play this team against Everton : Szczesny, koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermalean, Miquel, Song, Ramsey, Rosicky, Walcott, Van Persie (C), Gervinho. With a subs bench of : Fabianski, Djourou, Frimpong, Benayoun, Ramsey, Arshavin, Chamakh. Elz. Gooner till I die.

Surely Arsene Wenger had to play some first team players in this match or he would have been cited by UEFA as being unfair on the other teams in the group. He decided that by playing Vermaelen and Santos that he would satisfy the scrutineers in that he chose a competitive team. He must have decided that these two players were less tired than the ones he left at home. If he had played a full second team I am certain that Arsenal would have been accused especially if the other game had finished with Marseille losing.

Well fellow gunners, I must say I was very worried watching the game the other day cos of Verm n Santos, they should never have been on the plane. But Wenger as the manager would be the one who know exactly why. I am a strong Wenger defender but I think this was a mistake. Haven said that, lets not panic yet. The 2 defenders am most impressive about coming through are Yennaris and Miguel. They have not been properly introduced into the first team cos the boss wants to give playing time to Djouruo n Squil. To be honest in recent games I am less worried seeing Squid play but I get very nervous every time the ball comes through Djour. He panics n the whole defensive thing just isn’t working out for him. I think Wenger should use this chance to bring the likes of Yennaris and Miguel into the team ahead of Djour n co. I am very relaxed to see miguel on the ball even as a LB(not his natural position)

Injury is one of the unfortunate side of football hence,we should not moan too much that Aw fielded Santos that night.Other teams are feeling the heat too-look at united for eg who has their best defender out and they still crashed out of CL.
We have enough cover until January,and then AW really needs to buy.Let,s decimate Everton tomorrow and move up to fourth position in the epl.No shaking!
