Toby: All Arsenal Fans need to face the facts together and move on with Wenger’s help

Posted on January 18, 2012 by admin

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me god! By Toby

With so much turmoil at the club at the moment its hard to know which way to turn or who to listen to, fans like myself spend hours trawling the net for a hint of a big signing or news that Van Persie will pen a new contract.

Day after day we are disappointed and perplexed by the situation and not Wenger nor the board can give any definite answers as to where on earth this club is heading, one thing i know is that us fans must unite, but with all of us at each others throats and disagreeing on every little thing its seems almost as unlikely as Wenger unveiling Hazard at Friday’s press conference that the above will happen anytime soon.

I write this to give a clear and unbiased view of just what the hell is going on, and to try and help all of us find some common ground to share and maybe give others a much clearer view of the current situation !

Are we ready ? well make sure you’re siting on a pillow because this is going to hurt!!!

We are officially a selling club now and those who haven’t worked that out yet need to let it go and move on, from the moment we sold Ashley Cole to Chelsea and broke up the invincibles our fate was sealed. Cole wanted a pay rise and rightly so (at the time he was the best lb in the country and still is!) but the wheels were already in motion for project Emirates and no new big contracts were to be sanctioned for existing or future players. Basically last orders were called and the dismantling of the best team the Premier League has ever seen was well and truly under way.

Over the next few years all the big names left for better money and better prospects, by the start of the 2007/2008 season only four of the invincible squad remained and after last summers sale of Fabregas and Clichy now non remain, Almunia and Van Persie are the longest serving players, both joined in 2004 and are the only squad members left to have won anything at this club (no Henry doesn’t count! )

So why do we consider ourselves a top club? is it past success? is it our financial power? is it the contents of our trophy cabinet in recent seasons? This for me is one of the biggest arguments between fans as nobody really knows where we are or indeed where we should be. If we sit down and analyse the facts its clear we are no longer a big club. We buy players for cheap and sell them in their prime for big profits. We can’t offer big wages to keep existing players or tempt new ones, and as we have painfully found out in recent seasons we have absolutely no clout what so ever in the transfer market.

Well this for me clearly proves we are not a big club or a major European force anymore, and is indeed the same prognosis for the majority of Premier League clubs including teams like Aston Villa or Newcastle to name just a few. Add to that the fact the trophy cabinet has been bare since 2005 and its clear its only Arsenal and their fans that still perceive us as genuine big club! Times have changed and moved on and we have been left behind, we just haven’t come to terms with it yet. Truth is if Wenger hadn’t had kept performing miracles by securing Champions League qualification every year we would have fallen off the map along time ago.

So what now? well accepting the situation is the starting point of any problem, just like a gambler or alcoholic a severe dose of realism is needed before any Gooner can begin to move on. Whether it was a good idea or not to move to the Emirates its too late now, the Invincibles are gone forever and this club now operates in a completely different manner to Wenger’s glory days, and I’m sorry to say its no longe being run on a model built for success or competing with either of the Manchester clubs or for that matter Chelsea, therefore any success during this time is Wenger completely over achieving, and that top four finish is no longer our right but something to aim for, and celebrate when achieved.

In closing we must all except the current situation. Wenger is not perfect and does make mistakes like any other human being but he just simply does not have the tools to achieve what many fans are expecting of him. Since 2005 with little more than magic beans Arsene has created a completely new squad from scratch that last year beat Barcelona at pure football at the Emirates (the only team to not only win but actually out play them in recent memory) and was inches away from achieving greatness last season, but when push came to shove in the summer transfer market Wenger was hung out to dry by the board. His request to raise the salary cap to keep our best players and sign the few world class additions needed to complete his new squad were denied, and Wenger had to sit back and watch six years hard work torn apart in front of him. Now he has to start again and with more players set to leave its going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Love him or hate him, Wenger is showing loyalty above and beyond any player or board member and rival even the most devoted fan, he is taking the weight of the whole club on his shoulders through these difficult times. The fact that he chose not to walk away when project Emirates started and that he is still prepared to sit it out with no end in sight is something i just cannot put into words and demands respect from everyone associated with the club, from Silent Stan to the oldest fan!

For how long the board will continue to line their pockets and not invest properly i just don’t know, it might be another 10 years or take new owners before the business model is changed to that of a club that wants to seriously compete again. One thing is for certain though, thank God Wenger is prepared to go through it with us, as without him guiding us through these challenging times it could have been a whole lot worse. The board has no plans to change any time soon so we better hope Wenger doesn’t leave, or trust me we will really find out what it means to be a mid table club, and despite many fans ideas of grandeur all the evidence states by rights that’s exactly where we should be.

If Arsenal are going to be a selling team where we buy young players and develop them. Then can we please buy Gotze, Morrison, Hazard, Eriksen. One of those? To be a selling team you have to buy originally and develop your players to sell for more. Its seems like Wenger is taking GIANT risks by not gettin a left back on loan for example what if we get another injury? How about if Van Persie gets injured. The reason we aren’t a big team anymore is because we dont have depth. If Aguero gets injured, there is balotelli and dzeko. If Man u lose rooney to suspension, they have berbatov, wellbeck, and hernandez. WHo do we have? Decent Park, Dodgy Chamack and good but not good enough Henry.

i agree with you toby, if it hadn’t been for wenger’s help, our position would have been a lot worse. not so long ago, wenger said that he would like to sign neymar IF he had the required finances. its obvious, he wants to bring in players, but simply does not “have the tools” as you say. he also said that his aim is to make arsenal the best club in the world. but with such stingy owners, that’s simply not possible.

we just passed the halfway mark, but lost SEVEN games so far, yet hill wood says that he only cares about the club’s finances. prior to our 2-1 loss against spurs, gazidis said that he was happy with arsenal’s financial status!!!!!

so its obvious, our problem is the board & NOT the manager. i’m still not able to understand why wenger is blamed all the time for the board’s ineffiency.

Wenger is not stupid…even he knows he needs to buy good players and we need to keep our best players for a chance of any silverware…i mean who doesn’t..it’s basic logic…being a big club risky investments is a way of life..which sadly the board doesn’t seem to understand..honestly, there is no reason why wenger should be blamed for everything…the man’s won bpl 3 times…that really takes something..he’s a gem of a manager we really should be grateful that he’s sticking with the club through the hard times..as for me champions league finish, mid table or may be even relegation…I’M FOREVER A GUNNER!

    ash,
i disagree with you. the board is responsible for the current crisis. in the summer transfer window, AW did the scouting for jones & young, but man utd snapped them. jose enrique & downing were lined up as replacements for clichy & nasri respectively, but they landed @ l’pool. there were more players like mata, samba, cahill, jagielka, parker, gorcuff whom AW wanted to sign, but they either were snapped by other clubs, or chose to stick to their current clubs. why? bcoz the board refused to pay. wenger’s fault?……..you may draw your own conclusions.

What club wont put a shareholder of 29% on the board, that says it all, Its heart breaking watching them nowadays a team of years ago was a pleasure to watch by gooners and other fans , The current squad is not good enough and the players we do bring in are poor in relation to what we had and thats down to the board not sanctioning a increase in wages to attract young or older players that have the quality we expect.

maybe when we finish outside the top six this season the board may relise what damage they have done to this club over the past few seasons, i doubt it but i hope so !

Great article Toby. My sentiments on this whole affair is that when at Highbury I was like many fans who actually thought: “You know what mate, wouldn’t it be great if we could sit in a new stadium with better facilities…”. If I had known then what I know now, that the new stadium would have such a stranglehold on the clubs finances for 20 years ( clubs mortgage is for 20 years I think) then I may not have been so keen on moving to the Emirates!!! David Dein believed strongly that to compete in the short to medium term we would be better off with a Sugar Daddy like Usmanov! The board disagreed. At that time I also vehemently disagreed with him and supported the board. Hindsight is such a wonderful thing… Its all ifs and buts but dont get me wrong here Toby, I will still watch the team play and continue to cheer them through thick and thin, after all we are the Gooner faithful. Cmon u Gooners.

This article is spot on. It hurts me to my core that my club, our club is being harvested of all its funds, players and history. We are hurting the club we love by allowing the board to continue doing this. Wenger is an absolute legend who hasnt ‘lost it’ but is struggling and as toby says is pulling off miracles year after year with a squad that in the main arent good enough to pull on the shirt. time for the board to invest or go. If they dont go we should resolutely and absolutely join together (whatever your thoughts)as fans and lovers of this amazing club and stand up to the board. They must step down or invest. NO ARGUMENT. They have let us and Wenger down – Big style -. Wenger to stay. The board to show him and us some respect. Now not later before we turn into mid table mediocrity.

Please, please, please learn to write comprehend-able sentences, it is so tiring trying to make sense of what you’re saying.

Every comment you leave on any article, either seems to be about trying to get Wenger out, or about how it is our coaches / medical staff that keep injuring our players…
How about reading the articles and then leaving a comment that has something to do with them?

    @Toby

I and every other person who has looked into the clubs transfer dealings, would struggle not to agree with this article.
Wenger is doing absolutely everything he can to keep what should – by rights – be a mid-table club, in the C.L.

Until the board either scrap, or at least allow some kind of relaxation to the players salary-cap, we will never attract any big players, and will struggle like mad to keep any of our good ones, because other clubs can literately offer them double or more in wages.

As you mentioned with regards to Neymar, Wenger has said several times he would love to buy players of this calibre (he was also quoted as saying he was ready to re-invest everything we got for Fabregas in an attempt to sign Hazard in the summer) but the board will simply not sanction him the funds!

Whilst something must be done with regards to Arsenals hierarchy and its transfer policies, trying to oust Wenger has to be one of the most brainless ideas I have heard.
Any other manager with the same level of funding he has at his disposal would have had us finishing in the top-10 at best for the past 6 years.

@gunnersince15 absolutely right, unbelievable that this club has such low ambitions from the board. wenger is the one constant thing that the club can hold onto. he’s a fan and determined. any world class club would have AW as their figurehead. we as supporters should be proud to have wenger as our boss or else we would be 10th or 12th in the league or, God forbid, worse . Thank God he is here. board members like peter hill-wood need to be ousted as they do NOT have the club at heart but more their bank balance. They do not understand love of the club. they understand profit and loss and are ruthless business men who think short term and their pockets. does it bother them that we dont qualify for champions league? no, of course not. they are only interested in ‘what is in it for me’. this is a disgraceful ethic for the fans and only spells the sucking of funds out of the club and into their ruthless pockets. the board do not care about the ongoing future of the club but only themselves. Time to mount a protest against the shortsighted and uncaring board. I LOVE this club and so do ALL OF YOU. Get this board of money crazed NON SUPPORTERS OR CARERS OUT of this club and we CAN be the best again. I find incredible that the constant negativity pointed at AW based on 6yrs without a trophy. If that is not acceptable have a thought for Liverpool Newcastle or even Tottenham fans, they may not be as big but they are surely big enough that they should have won an EPL title in the last 20yrs.

Arsene Wenger has done wonders for Arsenal new stadium training facility and success on the pitch. Have a thought if he did not take over as manager, where would Arsenal have been today and would they have achieved the success they have under Wenger.

Football is a business, plain and simple, it just happens that Arsenal are in the business of profit.. This does not come down to Wenger, but the board.. Until the board is removed or a takeover is made.. We will continue to be in the business of developing and selling..

In saying that we will finish top 4 and the rebuilding will start next season…

  52. Write what you like and I believe what I want to believe. And these are my beliefs; Arsenal FC is the greatest club in the world, we are lucky to still have Arsene at the helms of affair, the old men on the board will not live forever, they met Arsenal Fc and when they go Arsenal FC will remain. Finally we wil win the title some day. It is not all gloom, it is a phase. GUNNERS for LIFE!

Fans of AFC all over the world agonize at the rate the board does things…my ten year old boy keeps asking me ‘When is Arsenal going to buy a decent player..When??? and just like Wenger I tell him ‘I don’t see it happening soon…we have enough, infact we have surplus!Just where and how low the board wants the club..We Don’t Know..It is trully hearbreaking.

i guess the intellectual capacity of the current board is lacking. anyone in business knows that for your business to be profitable you have to be the best at what you do.

To put this in the perspective of AFC, if they wanted to make real money they will have to put football first and make sure that AFC is the best club in the world. the team should win trophies and be the club of choice for any player. They can only make real money when sponsors are linning up to put money into the club. At the moment it is just a matter of time before we loose all the big sponsorships and the real quality players dont even consider AFC as an option. All is not lost they can still turn the situation around but the real question is whether they will do that?

I disagree what you said about Wenger. The man is just riding the gravy train like all the rest of the board. And he still continues to lie to us fans and the media about quality signings, meanwhile he knows we will never get a whiff of those players?? Come on folks, if Wenger had any real integrity, he would have given the board the finger and found a better club to go to where he can win them silverware.

Managers should be like players, every professional sportsman wants to win trophies. Managers are no different. So do you think Wenger is content to manage a club for the next however many years and not win a trophy? Looks that way doesn’t it. As long as he receives a fat paycheck every month, he doesn’t care. A manager who does not have silverware on the mind, is not a manager in my book. And Wenger falls into that category. He has turned into a wheeler and dealer only to please Kroenke and the board. Very sad.

@Corey I agree. With success comes more success = more profit. I mean didn’t they teach that to Wenger when he did he got his highly rated economics degree? It’s not like Arsenal have such a bad team atm (without injuries.) If we can sell some deadwood and buy 2 or 3 world class players, we would be title contenders for sure. This is an investment, but it will pay off in the long run.

Really what is the board’s problem? It’s almost like they do not want AFC to succeed. Without CL, quality players etc, Arsenal will be making LESS profit. How does Wenger expect to sell a youngster for millions to other European clubs, when Arsenal are not getting the exposure we are used to? I’m telling you now, half the players we have sold for ridiculous amounts of money was mainly due to hype and because of our club doing so well. If we end up mid table, AFC will start to lose reputation and it will be increasingly difficult for Wenger to take a monkey and make people think he is the next Zidane.

    hello…
u have written something about the salary cap…either u donot know…or u intentionally overlooked the fact that best arsenal players are underpaid and the worst ones are overpaid…
take for example players like diaby, squillaci, almunia
we donot at all require their services yet..we adhere to the hope that sometime someday the sun would shine on them and they would deliver…the big clubs donot do that…we never did that 6 years ago….
george graham made a good arsenal squad by getting the best chamoionship players at lower prices…and made a fantastic squad with a good team chemistry….
isnt the LOW SALARY CAP A false piece of information?
we pay players who are not required and we donot pay the players we require to keep them…..
it has been really sad days for us gooners

It’s all well asking for “world class players” to be bought, but ARSENAL FC has their policy of purchasing great potential then turn them into world class players,V Persie,Fabregas,Henry to name a few.
If we were to purchase any player over 20 Million this will contradict everything this club has tried to do first of the salary cap will have to go which i’m in HUGE favor of. No big budget signing won’t sign a contract for 80k -100k week.
Soccer is a business we now play at the best stadium in the country maybe even Europe this comes at a price, the best training facilities and medical center. This here is development for years to come all childrens, children will see Arsenal in the top flight for Decades to come.

Trophies yes but would i spend twice to three times more than the price money of the EPL on transfers and salary for that trophy? that’s a huge NO.

The more you want to isolate the outcome between Wenger’s decisions and the board by making him look a victim, the more you will sanction the challenge. Managers often give Boards ultimatums and threaten to resign – dedicated Managers that need to see changes. We need the team to perform well and bring trophies. How this happens is non of our business. What frustrates us is that we have in the past two transfer windows brought outselves to the responsibilities of Arsenal scouts. When Arsenal does not buy, we get rightly frustrated. We have an unwritten contract with Arsenal as fans but many (especially those in the UK) do not have consequences for not abiding by the contracts. The stadiums will always be full even when we are relagated

After reading this I feel sorry for solely blaming wenger for arsenal’s recent struggles right now I believe the board is to blame especially with kroenke at the helm!! I jua hope they would strive to be more awake to our(fans) existence and put into practice some much needed transparency!!! after all with all this pigheaded leadership # 5 is not all that bad!! lets hope for a top 4 finish and hope for a miracle in the summer!! Without optimism we wouldnt really be arsenal fans would we now?

I have been a supporter from the days of charlie george and Bob wilson, me and Denton(original gooners knows of him)lived, ate and slept the gunners, will always be a gooner. but very dissapointed with the way the board and Stan Kroenke are handling our finances. this is a two way street. Spend and we will gladly pay to watch our beloved gunners. If not then empty stadiums don’t pay bills. The fans should boycott a few games to show them we are serious about the Arsenal.
