Toby – How the board hampers Wenger’s transfer dealings (And Arsenal’s denial)
Way back in march i posted an article on here defending Wenger and questioning what was really going on behind closed doors, i wrote this article after having stumbled across and interesting bit of reading which made it clear all was not what it seemed at the Emirates and that Wenger was working under tight restrictions from the board.
After i tried to contact the editor of the piece i based my article on it was removed only hours after going up and i was told to drop the matter when i pushed for the source to verify the facts, the article i posted subsequently got absolutely hammered by everyone on here including Adam Kemp who had me for lunch with his responses to the post. At the time i tried to point out that i had stumbled across this information and was just relaying it to fellow fans, my only real point that i tried to get across was to lay of Wenger because no one really knows what goes on between him and the board and we could well be aiming anger at the wrong man. All the points made were lost and i let the argument go and took the pasting on the chin but i always had a feeling that was not the end of it.
Low an behold on August 21,2011, i stumbled across an article posted on ArsenalTimes by a chap called Eduardo (no, not that one!) and to my complete shock it was almost word for word what i had stumbled across way back in march and what i had based my article on. The piece was called “Wenger and the board at loggerheads” and i advise any gooner that hasn’t read it yet to go to ArsenalTimes and check it out asap!
The gist of Eduardo’s article was that the board are not backing Wenger properly and although its not the same as what i posted all the main points that i tried to raise have once again come to the surface. Points like Wenger wanted to sort Nasri’s contract out way back in January with a big money offer but the board wouldn’t sanction it, and that wenger was well aware of the shortcomings in the squad and knew he’d taken the kid’s as far as he could and needed the big hitters like Benzema to finish the job and take us to the next level.
The biggest confrontation is that although wenger would spend 30 or 40 million on a player and the board have given the green light (sound familiar) what the board wont do is meet the contract demands that the players wenger wants will undoubtedly come with, lets be honest what 30 million pound player is going to play for £80,000 a week? Wenger knows that to compete we need a new wage structure for our better players and potential targets of at least £150,000 a week to keep this club anywhere near the top and challenge for honours.
Now I’m not saying either mine or Eduardo’s articles are gospel, i couldn’t verify my source and Eduardo refuses and rightly so to reveal his, but what is very interesting is that Eduardo claims his source comes directly from the inside the Emirates, if this is true there must be some substance to it somewhere along the line, after recent events its obvious that Samir and Cesc’s departure have hurt wenger deeply, and if you read between the lines with whats going on in the press from Wenger’s end its clearly a man that does not have the freedom we all think, i pointed out in march that there was no way the man that built this squad could be so naive to not see what was wrong with it and with everyday that passes and every comment wenger makes to the press it becomes more and more clear that there is so much more to this than just “wenger is stubborn and naive” hes getting a right good seeing to at the moment and the board seem to be happy to watch from a distance whilst the money keeps rolling in.
As always fans will make up there own minds and fill in the gaps themselves, however i would again like to make the plea not to keep bashing up the boss, i wouldn’t suggest for one second Wenger hasn’t made mistakes but until we get to the bottom of the boardroom antics its not right or fair to lay so much blame on him, truth is Wenger could be performing miracles considering the conditions and if this does turn out to be the case we could well be destroying the work of a great man and put our club in serious jeopardy of sliding into the abyss.
I shall leave you with a response that Eduardo received within 24 hours no less from arsenals senior media officer Katie Baldwin which stinks to high heaven if you ask me, i especially like the bit she drops the club in it by verifying that the source had indeed come from within, judge for yourselves but there’s definitely something a bit skewwiff about it if you ask me
” Hi Eduardo
Having read your piece today we feel its appropriate to get in touch to say its entirely factually incorrect.
A number of other sites have picked up on this and are reporting various elements, and they have also been warned this is without substance.
By all means do call us in the office if ever you want to sound something out before running it, we appreciate you’ve had a steer from someone who has contact here at the club.
Ultimately we want all supporters to be able to read factual pieces so help it helps you to

Pheeeeeew that stinks! almost like shes saying you might have a source and you might well be right but it ain’t official unless we say it is! naughty boy, hand smacked!! What do you guys think?

NOW IT SEEMS THAT EVERYBODY IS AGAINST ARSENAL FANS FOR NOT BEING HAPPY…AFTER 6 YEARS WITHOUT TROPHY WE SHOULD JUST PAY THE HIGH PRICE TICKETS AND SHUT UP… IN MY OPINION ONLY THE TRUE ARSENAL FANS ARE TODAY THE ONE WHO ARE WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE CLUB… WE JUST WANT THE CLUB TO BE ONE OF THE BEST THAT IS ALL….
Opinions divided. What do you think?

Greedy Americans!!! Silent Kroenke will not explain anything to the fans.
Arsenal will need to drop out of top 4 and finish just above the relegation zone for the board to take notice. We have a greedy owner / board along them we have a once wise manager who has been taken for a ride. Wenger has lacked the ambition of winning and just follows what the board say to him. If he truly loves Arsenal and wants to win he should come out and say the truth, rather than making up lies to the fans.
We as fans need to do something to stop this madness, without us there wont be a club.
Come on Arsenal

Interesting. . . Either way we can all agree im sure that we’re in real trouble and as yet I’ve not heard any solid leads on genuine transfer targets?. If it is the board they are comiting finical suicide. Stupid ticket prices and potentially not getting in the champions league could cripple arsenal fc.

I have said all along Wenger isn’t the problem at arsenal,
the biggest mistake the board ever made was getting rid of
David Dein.(for trying to get silent stan in the door)I’m afraid if anyone is to take the blame for our current mess is Mr.Gazidis this man is not a football man, he know’s nothing about how to handle player transfers, you can be dam sure moneybags nasri would still be at the club if David Dein was still at the club. BRING DEIN BACK, GAZIDZ OUT.

STOP POSTING IN CAPS IT’S ANNOYING AS HELL AND MAKES WHAT YOU SAY UNREADABLE (end caps)
There is a need for real transparency at our club. Too much going on behind closed doors. Even Cesc said he was forced to keep his mouth shut during his transfer and even Wenger had to deflect it all the time. Something tells me the same was true of Nasri and the board effectively let him become a pariah because of it.
I’m getting sick to death of the Arsenal board. Any sensible gooner knows what the hell is going on and they’re fine with things the way the way they are. Unfortunately we know how good Wenger is and we know he will in fact pull a rabbit out of a hat this season and make us contenders again.
I don’t want Wenger out but I’d love to see the faces of idiots calling for his head if he was indeed sacked, the new manager would be under the same restrictions and would flop badly, we’d become the mid-table team in tune with our wage structure.
It’s simple we are only the team we are today because of Wenger and make no mistake if we’d gotten in someone else 2 or 3 seasons ago we’d be in the same state as Liverpool.
Unfortunately it really is going to take a major disaster such as that for the board to finally cop on.

Well worded, honestly there has to be something fishy cooking behind the scene,i dont think AW enjoyed selling Gas n Nasri,he was given no support by th said board in trying to keep 2 of the best members of the squad, clichy too.I thnk its time the wage structure at Arsenal was revised, upwards of course and AW given the support he requires…GUNNERS 4REVA!

The simplest answer is usually the correct one. The board operates on one premse alone, profit. Increased wages are the greatest threat to this. There’s no sense in Arsene bidding on top talent knowing full well that wage demands will ultimately sabotage any deal. It was probablly a factor in Cesc’s departure, and aboslutely the reason Nasri left. Who’s next? The best thing to happen to Arsenal might be them missing out on th CL this year. The board will have to face facts that talent demands wages and getting the CL money depends on having talent. In Arsene we trust, in the board we rust. Which is why, if nothing changes, Arsene will leave, at the end of his contract or sonner, and go to PSG. I wish him well.

Since 1888, only two managers have led their teams to top four finishes in the top division of English football for 15 consecutive seasons. One of them is Alex Ferguson. I’ll leave you to work out who the other one is.
Even the mighty Liverpool machine of the 70s and 80s couldn’t manage that!

hi fellow gooners. I read on a twitter account of arsene (most likely a fake one like most) tweeting “the board agrees on buying a ferarri, but only if it runs on diesel”. What bothers me more is that our transfer targets have turned their backs on us at the last moment and would rather stay at mediocre clubs like rennes, weder bremen and everton. What is the story there??

Thanks for the article. It might all be true that the Board is the problem. But Arsene has put himself in a position where he rationalizes all the decisions that are made and always gives cover for whatever bullshit the Board is up to. As a manager, he should grow some BALLS and denounce what he does not think is right for the club. He’ll have all the fans supporting him and if the board wants to fire him, so be it. At least he won’t be a accomplice in sinking the club and would avoid tarnishing his legacy. As far as I am concerned, he’s the one doing the talking and rationalizing every decision or lack thereoff that is made. So he is just as guilty and deserve to take some heat.

Yes we had a good performance tonight , Thomas Rosicky surprised me with his desire to win the ball back and showed energy when going forward , thats the Rosicky we bought from Dortmund , and Szczęsnys penalty save has to go down as one of the best penalty saves ive witnessed for a long time , but enough of the praising my point is / problem is the board if nobody is signed before deadline day i think no matter what us gooners should start a campaign , Kronke OUT , sack the board , and all that jazz , it worked for Liverpool , all this money made through tv revenue ,ie SKY TV , CHAMPIONS LEAGUE , player sales , gate receipts , us fans run the club , if we didnt show up u would have nothing , so either spend or fuck off , you have made profits now give us something back , a center back , a creative midfielder , and a striker for RVP as we all know he will get injured sometime soon . KRONKE OUT , DEIN AND USMANOV at the helm please , Americans have no place in British football Period !

Arsene Wenger is an employee of the club. He does not conduct contract negotiations – that is the remit of Gazidis. Neither does he sanction the outlay of capital – that is the remit of the board. If any body belives that Wenger is totally an utterly in control of dictating what to spend then they are being naieve – business doesn’t work like that. As an employee of the club Arsene has to be careful what he says, how he says it and when. Of course Wenger isn’t blameless but I wish people would get a sense of perspective.

Arsene Wenger has done well enough to get 60M for Fabregas + Nasri, without full co-operation from the players.
Fabregas could have curbed his enthusiasm to join Barcelona, to create a bidding war.
Nasri could have said he would welcome the CAM position vacated by Fabregas and sign an extension for the right price.
The problem with F&N transfer sagas is that there was no “contradictory stories”. For a good example, refer to Lille and Eden Hazard.

As much as i’d love to believe this the truth is that Arsenals’ strict wage structure has been reported on since as far back as 2004. In 2008 Flamini infamously left because of the wage structure and that was before Gazidis joined, long before Kroenke arrived. We can blame them for not abolishing what was already in place and holding the club back but not for introducing it. Kroenke and Gazidis are the men with the power to change things though, i expect that Arsene has little influence over the wage structure. I can’t see any advantage from a managers’ perspective in having such a strict wage policy, only disadvantages. So one thing that doesn’t make sense is to blame the manager.

well done to jenkinson tonight, and well done to rosicky for bringing some control to a match that was getting away from us. i think walcott is twice the player on the left than the right as he can see so much more of the game and has much more options to chose from, now im actualy getting excited about who might come in to the team in the next week or so. lets make a statement now and get the players needed to make us challange again. i still dream of hazard, such an important win tonight, well done lads!

Whoa! people this is not the way to get your information. The board do have the ultimate say with regard to everything at the club. It is a club and not a dictatorship. If Arsenal football club wants to buy for 2p then they can look for 2p. It is not our right to tell them what to do. We may be members but not voting members. In order to have a say in the running of the club we have to establish a system where as members we have a voice on the board. Currently we have to accept whatever Arsenal say. The club with the services of Wenger have been progressing positively. There are some who think Fantasy football is how things work, but the wages, insurance and the overheads cost the club a lot of the income. A million is still a lot of money, apart from, for those clubs that are in huge debt and are financed from outside football.
Wenger said ‘we work on sweat while others work on petrol’. I wonder if you know what he meant?

I don’t believe Arsene Wenger would tolerate this kind of behaviour from the board..

It appears clear now that Kroenke and the board are more concerned with money grabbing than bringing success to the club. But surely they must realise that investing in top players and meeting their wage demands is the best way to win trophies, and in turn maximise the revenue the club generates. The other top 5 clubs in the country seem to realise this so why doesn’t ours?
We don’t want our board to solely concentrating on watching their shares go up. But seeing as they are, shouldn’t someone explain to them that guided by the genius of Wenger, investing in quality will have their pockets bulging. With money. Unless they really do LOVE money…??

In Arsene We Trust! Gunners for life….its not just some club, its a way of life. The business side of Arsenal is the boards story, Wenger is doing his job, never doubted our champions league spot. Face it without Fabregas and Nasri (who will be missed) and even our injured players we still play quite well. Whether the board is being to stubborn and making Wenger’s job even more stressful we may.never know, but a certainty is that everyone sees the need for new “super-quality” additions, break the bank, even if its just for 3 players, this season we will fight with honour as always, no matter what may try and get us down!

i see all the comments about the board and i couldnt agree more.
it is true that maybe its jst a atter of time before they open the cheque book — once new stadium debt is settled.
However, Wenger is a true champion — hes making a go under tough conditions and not complaining (AT LEAST NOT DIRECTLY lol!)
Everyone must realize the tremendous love of the game this man has and his dedication to often young spoiled brats. This is coupled with his having to deal in silence with his Board restrictions because at the end of the day, we must all remember he is an employee after all and if he truly speaks his mind he could be fired or sued for breach of confidentiality.

I like to see the likes of @Baz comment to this and all his rant about AKB’s. If you had the previledge to hear Liam’s Brady response to transfer policy within Arsenal. The wage structure can not compete with the likes of Manshity & Chelski. Nasri leaving Arsenal clearly confirms this fact. We all talk about him being offered same wage as Fab4. He went to Manshitty for £175 a wk can u tell me Arsenal can afford that kinda money. You have a goal keeper that cost £50,000 as good as most keeper in the EPL. You’ve got to appreciate Arsene and i have said time without numbers all hate needs to be directed at the board.
Fine he is asked to sign whatever player he wants – Tell me if u can find a world star player that would come to Arsenal on a £90,000 a wk. Have u read the paper lately and see how much Eto is being paid (£345k) a wk.
Guys lets get real and get behind the manager hardly any manager could make the club so successful under the current structure. Our so called billionaires don’t invest like the Abramovic and Monsoon of this world. In Arsene we trust in Anti Arsene we rust.

Connor henderson £20m while Gervinho cost £10m.
Bagain or no bargain he still get good players that fit within the structure not Average players that fits within the structure then we would become a mid table club.
It is true we lack dept and i believe the manager would bring in new players n i can understand it’s not going to be schneider £200k a wk. Henry, Viera the list is endless how much do they cost???

Thank you very much Toby. I have said it on this forum, FTK and Le Grove that everyone was getting it wrong. I also said clearly that what was obvious is that Gadzadis and the board were cowards hiding behind Wenger.
Again, Gadzadis is the CEO, how come he is not coming out tell us what is really happening. I have wondered that for the past few weeks only David Dein has come out in support of the manager.
Why did it take us so long to complete the 1M transfer of Campbell. Why did they allow the sale of Fabregas and Nasri to go on and on. Wenger can’t take those decisions on his own. He doesn’t own the club.
I hope we can all pour our venom right where it should be at the coward Gadzadis and the board.

This article is absolutely unsubstantiated and wouldn’t even hold up in a court of law. People like AW should come forward and speak up if he is so innocent as you claim. Or he should apply pressure on the board. Or quit. End of.
Now ask yourselves: Why would AW come out and say things like “I will pay £30 million I will even pay £40 million if I find the right players.” OBVIOUSLY, a player which costs that amount would command a high salary. AW of all people should know that and yet he boldly made that statement!! Did the board put a gun to his head and forced him to say that?

Prior to Cesc & Nasri’s departure, he did say that HE expects both to stay and HE expects no one to leave. Doesn’t that signal that he did want them to stay but got no support from the board?
Right after Nasri’s departure, he said “..if a player coming into the last year of their contract is determined to leave the Club and we also receive a competitive offer for them, this clearly influences OUR decision-making process.”
So the way I see it, Wenger wanted to retain Nasri and forego the offer but I believe the board insisted he be sold.
My 2 cents.

That CLEARLY indicates that he wanted to leave soooo badly and would NOT have signed a new contract!!!!!Under these circumstances, AW would be a fool not to sell him for £24 million!!! what “decision making process” is there to make here when it is so clear what should be done!

It could be true that Wwnger is made to fail by the rigid policies of the board like very low pay to players and not wanting to spend much on top class players. It is high time the board realised that things have changed because the once weak teams like Chelesaea and Man. city have all got people who are pouring money in the club without minding developing football. I have pity players like Nasiri and Clichy for joining Man. city ; they are going to be on bench like Adibayor and will request to leave and fail to find a club to take them . They have gone to burry their football for money and will live to regret their decision. The club ( Man. city) has not become good . I still have respect for Man. united, Asernal, Liverpoor and not those Money Clubs

Firstly we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Arsene even in the last few years that have been trophy less we still enjoyed European final fa cup final league cup top four every season great facilitates great football great players from buying right like nasri adebayor hleb selling them for fortunes or developing our players and doing the same. I’d like to be told which one of our players we have sold has done amazing things after they left us even king Henry was just another player in Barcelona did he make that much impact no …
remember board managers players come and go. We the fans deserve more
Honesty transparency we need to get exited. We are FC not PLC
If Stan and Usumanov want divis and share value buy a hedge fund or a trading business not an institution …oh by the way the club makes enough money not to need their money not a single penny of their investment has hit our club. It’s gone to lady Nina and other directors who have just sold their shares.
My beef is simple I hold three season tickets have done for years I have a right to be told what the plans are,
Why does the manage close ranks with the board
Ferguson does not Harry would not daglish would not be honest why does wenger not side with us after all he promised us we need a new stadium to compete. Did he mean compete with spurs and be a feeder club to Barcelona and man city
By the way thanks to them both at least they paid for the stadium debt

And for that to happen, we really need to give Arsense the support he can get. To share a common goal towards success. And not always blabbering about who he would like to sign. Or those ‘murderous’ comments towards a player who chose to ply his trade elsewhere. I’m not telling everyone to believe that ‘we are a strong team and can win the title’. We just need fans to show your loyalty, to share the ups and downs togther as Arsenal. And not someone who will celebrate when Man City/ Liverpool / Man Utd wins the title and he will tell the world he is a die-hard support of that team.

@ Menace… go shit in your hands, or smoke some dog shit. Do the board members buy season tickets? Let me make it clear to you cause you are obvioiusly slow… the board makes profit if the business is doing well. What do you and I make??? Nothing!!! yea, that’s right …nothing. Rather we go look for money and bring to them just so we can support the team and watch them play every season. When they need more money, they just increase the ticket cost and we still do long hours at our jobs to be able to afford it. They watch for freeeeeee!!!!
If I’m allowed to watch for free and I take profit at the end of the business year… why on earth will I want to change that? Now that’s the position of our board.
Much as I think Arsene has made some mistakes in the past, they are not mistakes SAF and Mourinho have not also made but their board allow them bring in great players, it is clear that the board is not helping Arsene with the ones he would have got right. Wayne Rooney earns 250k weekly… does that sound like what our board will sanction? Manshitty pay loads of quids for all the wannabes that’s flooded they squad why will they not play at the top level. Guess what we pay RVP, Vermalean, Sagna, Song, etc. Clichy was one of the best left backs in the league, guess how much we were paying him… 50K at Arsenal Wayne’s salary will pay the salary of 5 of our fist team players. Let the board keep their wage structure and they will settle into where teams with that structure play… Mid table!
Don’t ever come on this site again to canvass support for the board until they change their ways from this short sighted thinking they display. Arsene is a great manager and has my unflinching support.

Your spot on, people forget that there is alot more to buying top players then just having the funds and managers nod. A horse designed by a comitee is a camel and it seems Arsenal have the same issue with the need to remain super profitable while maintaining high standards. This was going fine but the last few seasons have shown that a few players on at least 150,000 a week is no longer a luxury but a standard. The press always want to hammer Wenger because people read it just like when they hammer celebs, but real Arsenal fans can see through this and have to just hope that last night now means that the board will now give our football artist the freedom to create a master piece. IN WENGER WE TRUST

If Wenger can’t sort it who’s next? Let’s get a manager like the legendary “SIR” Alex Ferguson in. Spend all our money, plunge us into debt and bring in trophies. Then these so called Goooners will be happy.
If this article is true, which I believe it is then we have no choice but to stick with Wenger. I’m damn sure glad it’s him we’re stuck with too. Because if you put Fergy in charge of our team with that board. I know where this club would end up.
Wenger made the club what it is. He changed football in a way. Everyone has followed suite in the EPL. Buy young, cheap and bring um through. The difference is our wages can’t support the structure. The players grow up and get better. Then want more money because they are worth more. Naturally. You wouldn’t want to be a Doctor if you got paid the same as a Nurse. I think either this is true. Or Wenger is waiting until we are clear of debt completely before he splashes the cash. Obviously, unless he jumps out and surprises me with a big signing.
