Too much dependency on Van Persie but Gervinho looks capable of covering

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

Arsène Wenger was indecisive about resting Robin Van Persie for Stoke’s visit to the Emirates, eventually deciding that the Dutchman would indeed start on the bench. The fact that a disappointing draw was on the cards until his introduction in the 66th minute – the Arsenal striker slamming-in two excellent goals – does suggest that Wenger has little in terms of other attacking options. However, one man proved him wrong.

Gervinho started alongside Van Persie on the wing and scored a delightful goal midway through the first half. He doesn’t get much attention from football fans as a whole but he has shown glimpses of some real talent. His willingness to steam towards the defenders adds something to the play, with the usual passing method being overlooked by the Ivorian at times. It doesn’t always work out but yesterday he was arguably among the best players on the pitch and topped the impressive performance off with a goal and both assists for Van Persie’s brace.

It is difficult to tell how Gervinho would cope with being depended-on for goals. Van Persie revels in this role, but with the Dutchman reported to be suffering from muscle tightness, Gervinho’s big chance could come sooner rather than later.

Nobody can argue that Van Persie is a class apart from the other strikers in the Arsenal squad, but is Gervinho the next best thing? Can he score the goals if/when Van Persie gets injured?

Gervinho’s a class act – but would struggle without a partner to play off…
and thats where we have a problem
a shell-shocked Chamackh or allow Walcott his wish to play a more central role
i would prefer the latter with OC takng the wide role – seeing the two of them in tandem might offer an interesting option

we’re too dependent on persie, i don’t think gervinho can put enough balls in the net. we need a good striker buy in january like tevez. unless park comes through as a goal scorer, persie has to hold out alone until january.

Gervinho, good as he is isn’t an out and out striker and would stuggle with that. I don’t see that as a viable option right now.

Dennis Bergcamp was right RVP should play behind a front two,he would be just as leathal behind two others that were scoring aswell,we depend on him too much just like when Henry was here. All the time he plays as the main man he is in the spotlight which will draw attention from clubs which we could do without.

let walcott take RVP’s position. Ox plays at Theo’s. walcott have told that he would better playing in the middle. give him a try.

i wouldn’t mind if you can rate me,but i will prefer the club picking up another striker by january transfer,RvP cannot do it alone. And if you rely on players like charmahk where are wasting our time.though let see what park is going to do?

Gervihno would be perfect in the middle.
Arshavin on the left and Ox on the right.
Arshavin will not be at Arsenal next year. He will extend his contract maybe, but only to be sold in May.

  19. WC says:

You cannot rely on Gervinho to come up tru,mps at the same level RVP can. That was never his role at Le Mans or Lille – he’s not a goal scorer, he’s a support striker. Moussa Sow was the goal machine last year while Hazard and Gervinho were support. Gervinho comes in from deep, carries the ball and makes assists for a pure finisher – that’s been his playstyle since his Le Mans days. He’ll score goals for sure but on average maybe a dozen or so, not 20+ every year and certainly not with the same goal to games ratio as an RVP or Henry. While he’s not old, he’s not that young either and he’s entering the period where it defines a player. If he wasn’t scoring 20-30 goals before now he won’t be doing it at some magical time down the road – he’s just about entering prime age for an outfield player and your statistics tend to remain more or less consistent from this point on through the rest of your career.

RVP needs world class help if Wenger wants to rest him or rotate him. We cannot count on Arshavin or Theo to fill in the gaps – they’ve both been below par for most of the seaons so far and we’re yet to see Park even warm-up for a league game. He’s tearing it up for South Korea every time so why hasn’t Arsene given him some kind of shot for Arsenal yet?

RVP is a good player, but even the most efficient engen can breakdown at some stage. We need another striker to cover up.. Just incase. It would b good for the team to have a cover for rvp play with gervinho, walcott, song, arshavin and arteta

Gervinho will become a very good player yesterday he was classic. I always said, from the beginning that we need to give the chance to the lads they are improving alot.

Yes it is right with RVP it would be disaster for the time being until the lads settle. I think overall we dominated the whole game but the goals were not coming.

A soon as RVP came the whole atmosphere changed he is very valuable to the club and we should not put him into the transfer windows.

Soon the team will come up and they are making all efforts. I agree on the above comments that lets just not put the lads down now we have to be behind them and support them.

    GOONERS FOR EVER.

  23. DNT says:

Gervinho can’t cover VP, he is better playing wide and that’s what he should do. Yesterday, he finally looked up and ended his magnificent runs with a good pass, but is obvious that he needs someone like VP waiting for that pass, and Chamakh is nothing like him, Park is much more alike being more tachnically gifted and having a good finishing. Anyway, and despite i appreciate chamkh efforts, he is not a player that we could use, he just doesn’t fit in the team and we should try to get someone like Cavani.

Gerv was awesome yesterday. His pull backs are a sight for sore eyes. I hope Walcott can learn from gerv to use his speed but not depend on it. That being said, arsenal still need someone who can create on the ball for themselves. We must make a solid purchase in January

  25. NKC says:

Look arsenal needs a strong striker like hulk. In fact I recommend hulk, deespite his buy out clause, we have 2 admit dat RVP will not be fit thru out d season, hulk will be a perfect replacement/partner 4 RVP, also I believe chu-young is also very capable 2 start 4 arsenal. Hazard or marin on even both would also provide creativity frm both wing and wide midfield. Finally we need 2 change our formation back 2 4-4-2, I believe we can relieve the glory days of the invincibles by reverting back 2 dis formation. Gunner 4 life.

I feel arsenals’ fan has been unfair to Chamakh. I really think he’s still a good striker as shown in the Blackburn match where he came on as substitute and scored a world class headed goal from Van Persie’s cross with two (not one) defenders closely marking him!
To make it more significant the 2 defenders who are marking him are Samba and Scott Dann, both are Arsenal’s transfer target!
He’s a penalty box striker with specialty for headed goals. In the Stoke game, it’s not really his fault where he failed to score, there are NO crosses for him to head towards goal! Can anyone tell me how many crosses Arsenal made into the penalty box from open play? Almost NONE!
