Arsenal have got the option to buy back Carlos Vela for the same amount, £4 million, that Real Sociedad paid for him last summer, but the Mexican striker seems distinctly unimpressed with the idea. He may not have a lot of choice in the matter, but I cannot see the point in bringing him back to the Emirates Stadium if he really does not want to come.
Vela spent time on loan with two other clubs in Spain before his loan spell at Sociedad convinced them to make the move permanent. The 24-year old has certainly flourished there, getting his best figures of 12 goals and eight assists last season. He has already repeated those figures this time, which makes him the club’s top scorer.
Vela has played in all but one of their league games and has fired them into the Champions League positions. He obviously feels comfortable there and wants to stay, as he explained to the Spanish news agency EFE.
Vela said, “Arsenal are a big team that gave me the opportunity to play in Europe. I will always remember that, but I didn’t have the opportunities that I felt I deserved.
“I am here and I would like to stay here.”
If Arsene Wenger is really serious about bringing the striker back to the Premier League, he will have to go and talk to him and persuade Vela that it would be good for him. The presence of at least the Spaniards in the Arsenal side now could also have a bearing on this, but it needs to be done with the agreement of the player rather than forced through. Do you think he is worth the trouble or should Arsenal just forget it?
