Vermaelen injury leaves Wenger desperate for left-back loan deal

Posted on January 01, 2012 by admin

It was always on the cards that Arsenal would suffer an injury to one of their centre-backs as all four have to play in every game to cover for the four injured full-backs, and it finally happened yesterday when Thomas Vermaelen suffered a calf strain during yesterday’s win over Queens Park Rangers.

Arsene Wenger admitted after the game that a left-back was now desperately needed for a loan period in January. “We have lost Vermaelen for two or three weeks so I have to look if I can find somebody on loan,” he said.

“It would be stupid for us to drop points because we don’t have a left back,”

“We now have three left backs out. Francis Coquelin came on in this position and did quite well but he is a central midfielder.”

Kieran Gibbs is not expected back until the end of January at least, and Bacary Sagna should not be far behind, but Gooners everywhere will now be desperately hoping that no other centre-backs get injured in the next few weeks.

***Arsenal to sign Lee Dixon and Nigel Winterburn!***

  8. chris from Cambridge says:

We should do what Arsene won’t do : Buy a defensively strong left back of experience. That way .. when Santos regains fitness we would have the option of one or the other according to circumstances. Arsene is hugely loyal – excessively so. He should not worry about Gibbs .. who may never make it and may seldom be fit to play. Gibbs will be better off through just being at the Arsenal and if he does make it big time … he too will return Arsene’s loyalty by leaving us when it suits him. That is how today’s players are.

A left back on loan could suite arsenal well. However I feel bringing in a versatile defender or midfielder would suite the club well. As Gibbs has always been and always is injured. We need someone who can play across the backline.

I thought Armand Traore did really well yesterday lol. Pity Wenger sold him, as he said we have too many full backs!!! Im sure Wenger never considers injuries an beleives we will sail through the season without one player getting injured.

Anyway realistically Wayne Bridge wouldn’t be a terrible signing however he’s English so would want big wages.

Personally id put in a cheeky bit for either Maxwell or Adriano from Barca!!

Everyone has been critisizing Arhavin lately, but I thought he was great yesterday. He worked off the ball which we haven’t seen for a while, and he played a beautiful pass to RVP for the goal. He would have scored if it hadn’t been for a great block. He rewarded Arsene for putting him in the starting line up.

For the defensive crisis, we do need a full back, but as Arsene thinks, it should be short term, as we have been unlucky with full backs so far. Someone consistent.

Make room in the squad to bring in foreign players. Sell Vela, Diaby, Squid, Alminia, & Arshavin & put the money to good use. Bring in the players so many people can see that we need so badly that we all know will fit in well with the team. Signal some intent with those signings to the players we so badly need to keep. Sign Podolski and Vertonghen then pick from
M’Vila, Reus, Gourcuff, Shaqiri, Loic Remy, etc. Forget Goetze cause he wants to go to Spain which means Barcelona (another headache we don’t want to deal with)

Is that really the solution? Personally i would instead have a look at what exactly the coaching and physio staff are DOING with these players.. i mean it’s season after season we have multiple players out at every point of the year! Gibbs, Santos, Vermaelan, Sagna, Jenkinson, Wilshere, Diaby… this happening every year can’t be coincidence! Some better physios/ fitness coaches may be needed instead of paying the more expensive wages of new players…

We can still win the title, 9 points is nothing… we just have to beat Man u and Man city …3 points behind, win all other games and hope someone helps us out…..but that is only if AW buys the players we need this month.

  41. MattH says:

    @Dood
Interesting theory, but I have to point out that
2 of the players currently out are ones that are almost always out through injury (Gibbs, Diaby) who obviously have problems that keep recurring and cannot be fixed by physio (Diabys broken ankle is seemingly beyond repair)

Wilshere is out with a broken foot Sustained on International Duty (nothing a physio or fitness coach can do)
Sagna – Fractured ankle from a collision mid-game
Santos – Fractured ankle from a fall mid-game

TV5 is only out for 2 weeks with a strain and was out last season due to an Achilles tear and tendon damage that 3 different world class surgeons took 7 months to notice.

There are also several players in the team who are almost always fit, and if the entire squad are put through the same training and fitness regimes then it would stand to reason that the current injury crisis in defence is down to bad luck rather than poor Fitness coaching or Physio treatments.
The problem is that when Arsenal pick up 4/5 injuries at once, we do not have the squad to cope (unlike ManC ManU and Chelsea

Arsenal need to cut a fair amount of dead-wood (Arshavin, Diaby, Djourou, Squidy, Chambles, Almunia,)
And but in some better squad players to take up some of the flack when things like the current injury crisis in defence happens.
    - It speaks volumes that in the current state of affairs Squiddy still cannot get a game

  42. Big Gun says:

Also it doesn’t make sense to keep players that are not even first team quality and that never play to be paying them while they are injured. Its like they are permanently subs. We need to get rid of these injury prone players and spend the money on players who are first of all BETTER and are not injury prone. Arsene keeps going on about the huge squad we have, but half of them are injured for crying out loud. As soon as a player begins to show these signs of prolonged injuries, there is no point keeping them at the club, because end of the day they are just costing us.

How about we get Podolski – Striker, yoann gourcuff – Creative mid on loan and Taye Taiwo from Milan on loan. As these 2 are on loan it will be enough time for the boss to decide if he want to buy them permanent or not plus good cover for our shortage. Taiwo is a very good leftback.

We all know what we’re going up with after this window, a sub standard second rate foreigner that wouldn’t be fit to lace the great Nigell Winterburns boots. Oh and let not forget a whole two months of Herny ego boosting in which he probably won’t score a single goal but might improve the atmosphere slightly! We need to sign quality players in their prime not unproven youngsters, washed up hasbeens and injury prone Rubbish that nobody else wants!

@Whizniz I’m talking about sub par players like Diaby, Gibbs etc. I knew from day one RvP was going to be a star, he has been my favourite player even when Bergkamp and co were around. When our ‘good’ players get injured, its fine because at least when they recover, they have something to bring back with them. (Jack Wilshere.) But what do players like Diaby have to bring back that players like Ramsey, Arteta, Coquelin, Wilshere, Frimpong, Rosicky don’t have to offer?
