Was Wilshere right to promise to stay at Arsenal for life?
At a time when money so often talks louder than anything else in football, Jack Wilshere has expressed his loyalty to Arsenal by ensuring that he will stay at the club for the rest of his career.
Speaking to iFilm London, he said, “Can I promise I will be at Arsenal forever? I can promise that, yes… I’ve been at the club since I was nine and I’ve learned to love it.”
This is certainly a bold statement from the young Englishman, who is now looking to remain out injured until the start of next year. There is no doubt that he is an iconic figure at Arsenal – especially since Cesc Fabregas’ departure to Barcelona – and he is everything that Wenger has been trying to prove: from youth comes the future of the club. Unlike other players who might simply use Arsenal as a stepping stone in order to get to ‘bigger’ and ‘better’ clubs – or simply higher wages – Wilshere has been with Wenger since the age of nine and he looks determined to pay back the club’s faith in him.
However, how can he be sure that things will go as he might have planned? After suffering his broken leg against Stoke, Aaron Ramsey took a while to get back to his best – a challenge he has now overcome – and a similar situation could arise for Wilshere. Ramsey enjoyed loan spells at Cardiff and Nottingham Forest after his injury and this kind of gradual reintroduction to the game could be what Wilshere will need. Of course, he will always remain a fans’ favourite and will be straight back into the team when back to full fitness but nobody – not even he who has been at the club for the majority of his life – can predict what opportunities or lack of them might lay ahead.
It seems unlikely that Wilshere would ever feel the need to leave his dream club but guaranteeing that he will stay for life it is undoubtedly a dangerous assertion for him to make. Was Arsenal’s brightest young talent right to make such a comment?

Of course he was right. He loves Arsenal so much and God knows how we Gooners love him. We have a new Tony Adams or Ray Parlour, mark my words. Jackie WILL be forever a Gunner. Quick recovery, you are already a LEGEND!

I think he said what’s in his heart, and he’s quite young so he speaks what he thinks…
Its a really good statement for the fans, but , the BUT, is that he should have added an IF… the best statement would’ve been, “if everything’s alright and goes well, i would love staying at Arsenal for the rest of my career”
- that IF would have put the Board on alert, i just hope the board dont exploit this fact and pays him his due salary and treat him like he should be, THE ARSENAL LEGEND OF the decade.

This is just what the club needed, a real boost for us all. Let’s not start reading into what he could/should have said please, cause he has spoken from the heart.
Now then all you doom and gloom merchants (Baz my friend where are you) why dont YOU commit yourselves to the cause and become a Gooner For Ever???
Thanks Jack next it will be Robin!!!!

Keep in mind that Wilshere is still 19 years old. I just hope that he’s mature enough to say and keep a promise cause the fans would never forget that.
The other thing, Wilshere will bounce back immediately after the injury. His first team place is irreplaceable in my opinion and you should never compare Wilshere and Ramsey, just by looking the way they play you should know who has more flair and talent. Ramsey was on form, Wilshere has always got the talent.

Of course he was right! If thats what is in his heart then why shouldn’t he say that? Personally I am thrilled to see such passion and loyalty from a player with all the talent in the world, in a game dominated by money. Loyalty speaks the loudest, and I’m proud to have a player like him in our team. And no we won’t have the same situation with jack as we did with Aaron. Aaron is a brilliant player with a lot of talent, but jack is in a whole other pool. Jack is future England and arsenal captain, and will grow into one of the best players in the world. So yes, he was perfectly right to say that. He loves arsenal; he has been arsenal for his whole life, and he has shown to the fans and to the footballing world, that he is a loyal, passionate player. And nowadays days, that’s uncannily rare.

Hopefully, this starts the right kind of culture in our club. The kind where players want to come, play for, be a part of making history, and say that they were a Gooner. Man U, and Barca have this. It’s rare to see players wilfully leave those sides. That’s what we need. The kind of club where, given the chance, a player would jump at the opportunity to play for us, and never want to leave – because we are ARSENAL! Come on Jack, we love your spirit. Big things for you son.

What a stupid question! Certain people question players loyalty and I understand that, with a lot of these badge kissing mercenaries who for example kiss the man u badge then 6 months later kiss the man city badge, then a young future England captain for years to come pledges his career to the arsenal and we get asked is that right of him? I’m so confused. And on a side note jack would walk into any midfield in the world maybe bar barcalona, remember he battled and came out on top against xavi and his mate who I can’t spell.

anything can happen in football
but i think wilshare has been at the club since 9
he loves the club.
players like him are good loyal to the club
unlike players like nasri and a few that spend a few years at the club and it dose not make a diffrence if they leave.
the likes of wilshare, frimpong, gibbs, alex and scezney
will be at the club for a very long time.
unless arsenal dont finishe in the top 4
then we cant blame them if they want to leave.

Bit of an over statement but was probably quite sincere at the time like, “til death us do part” etc. How many of us have said that? He`s only young, it could come back to bite him.

I truly believe and hope that the midfield trio of song, wilshere, and Ramsey will dominate the league for many years. They are all great in different areas and that’s what will make them good individually.

There is a difference between loving a club as a player and loving a club as a fan.
For players it is also there occupation. Like any other career out there, you want to achieve certain things in your life. Sometimes players leave because they want to explore new things, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love there former club. Fabregas is a perfect example.
Loving a club as a fan is different. If I tell you now to go and support Chelsea or United, you would probably punch me in the face. The loyalty from a TRUE fan towards their club is to just to strong. We are in it for life!
This brings me to my point. I believe Wilshere loves Arsenal as a player and as a fan. He can never see himself putting on a jersey beside the red and white. I think that why he said he wants to be at Arsenal for ever. That is the words of a true fan!
Wilshere is well on his way to becoming an Arsenal legend.

well what other way could he have answered that questions with out and negative feedback. thats the only answer he could of given to keep the arsenal fans on board. like so many other big players (not just arsenal) have said when asked that question “who knows what the future holds” and then left. one thing jack has what not many players have is a place in the arsenal side for how ever long he wants and aslong as he wants to be in the team i want him in my team. ps guna be captian for years pps and england

Some consider Jack to be wet behind the ears and that this statement of his, although big hearted, seems immature. Remember Jack has been with AFC since he was 9. Internally he has probably seen more than any of us. He knows the club inside out. I believe he said that because He genuinely does see Arsenal continuing to do well in the next couple of years and further. If we can qualify for the CL every year, who is to say we cannot win trophies? United were lucky to win it last year, and we were extremely unlucky. It is players like Jack and Vermalaen that will help Arsenal to win trophies. They are loyal because in their hearts they truly believe we have what it takes to win. Players like these are gold.

Yes where is “ASIF & BAZ”??!! The two wankers are off vying for something negative two happen, f*#*ing negative idiots…
I think Jack was right,to me he sounds like a person that loyalty means more than money & whatever honours the two faced soccer media & pundits want to give him… To often do we as soccer fans & consumers just look at the stars & forget about the die hard warriors in teams that give up everything for their teams… These people may not have the heaps of talent but they surely make up for it with HEART, they are the loyal to the end guys & I think Jack is loyal to the end…
