Wenger admits that Thierry Henry left Arsenal to win trophies (like Van Persie will…)

Posted on January 17, 2012 by admin

Arsene Wenger has welcomed Thierry Henry back to Arsenal on a short term loan, and whilst talking about the Gunners record goalscorer he has admitted that the Frenchman moved to Barcelona as he wanted to win some more trophies before he retired.

In a scenario strikingly similar to today’s problem with Robin Van Persie, Henry was approaching the end of his top-class career and felt that Arsenal were not going to win anything for at least a few years after he left.

Wenger said: “It was simple: I wanted Thierry to stay and he said ‘you have a young team, they will be good in three or four years but I don’t have time to wait because I am 30 and I have to go somewhere that I have a chance to win.’

“So he went to Barcelona, which was completely logical.”

So it sounds like Wenger will be just as understanding when Robin Van Persie leaves next summer in his quest to win something before he retires. The Dutchman has made no secret of his admiration for Barcelona, so maybe he will follow in Henry’s footsteps……

Wenger also told how he knew that Henry still had the desire to play in the Premier League, but wanted to watch him train for a few weeks before deciding whether he still had the fitness to cope with the Premiership.

He said: “When Thierry started training with us again it did take me two or three weeks to decide because you have to see what kind of impact he’d have with the team.

“I needed to know how he was physically, because you don’t know how it is in the States.

“I know how high the demands are in the Premier League. They are absolutely exceptional, the highest in the world, and you have to see if he can cope with that.

“When I had him on the phone a few times in the States he had an Achilles problem so I wanted to see how he responded to intense training again and he did well.

“But I know that the other players are very happy he is here.

“It was more of a case of how he coped physically and whether he wanted it as well – I was quickly convinced that he’d like the challenge.”

Henry certainly still has the desire and passion (as he showed in the altercation with Arsenal fans after the Swansea match) and he still has the skill (as shown against Leeds) and this is just making me wonder if Arsenal may have won some more trophies if he had stayed……

Love RVP and don’t want him to leave. If Henry didn’t leave, maybe RVP wouldn’t have so many chances to come back from injury and produce a great 2011 year performance.

It’s always harder in foresight but easier in hindsight. My belief is, there always comes a time when each team needs a change of guard. You have to put yourself in RVP’s shoes and think, “hey I’m only a few years from retiring and this will be my last lucrative contract”. I don’t doubt RVP’s loyalty to Arsenal, but everyone should be able to understand that your family comes first and you always do what’s best for them, not the millions of supporters and strangers that you’ll never meet.

If he goes, I wish him well and will sorely miss him. It’s how we will reinvest with the dollars we collect from his sale that concerns me most.

Well wenger do something to keep rvp if he goes were really in f#cked strengthen are squad show we have ambition to compete for titles buy samba podilski hazard or m villa that would seriously strengthen are squad to beat the best come on arsenal were a top club anything under fourth in the league is not good enough and next year title condenders

  5. H says:

We dont know if RVP will go but if he does, who can blame him. Only the club’s lack of ambition let him down, not the fans.

On the flip side, the club stood by him when he was rubbing horse placenta all over himself and getting decent wages.

Now he has had a great year he potentially wants off.

So the bottom line is….where is the loyalty? The answer probably is nowhere.

When the player is past their sell by date they are cast aside by the club.

When the player is doing well, they look for the biggest pay day and cast the club aside.

The fans feel cheated and abuse the player. Only natural to be selfish about the club you love.

However, all is fair in love and war and football contracts.

If RVP goes, its just another cycle. Not the first, not the last.

This whole thing is getting very puzzling. Does arsenal not have any sense of shame or pride? Wenger is openly admitting that he is incapable of winning trophies and encouraging his players to go elsewhere much better than arsenal. That to me is self-indictment of the highest order. If henry and rvp are really great, let make arsenal win something not runing elsewhere. Finally, wenger and the arsenal board shld have some pride.

Yes! “Completely logical”! Why hangout with dead woods? Nice move, Thiery, you really saw it coming. Wenger, I would be ashamed of myself if I said such things before the press, go and learn the meaning of “bad precedent”. Robin would unsurprisingly do likewise, and so will the rest of the now impatient growing players, in the spirit of what Wenger terms “completely logica”l.

    DAMN IT!
When will the higher ups see that we keep bringing in young players, but they keep getting lost, and have not enough players to look up to, and eventually leave because everyone is clueless together.

We have an awesome youth system, no doubt. Great talent, technically gifted, fast, fit, pacy…
But they don’t know how to win! Even someone like wilshere will become disheartened if we keep missing out in the last step due to the lack of experience. It is time to wake up and sign some experienced players, and get rid of the injury prone ones.

Deep inside we all know that players like Henry, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, and dare I say it, $amir Na$ri gave their all for the Arsenal cause, but we kept faltering at the last step. It is difficult to be in a losing team all the time, and the answer has always been to strengthen significantly. We have always been replacing players that want to LEAVE, but not getting rid of deadwood. So we keep getting replacements, but we need REINFORCEMENTS.

It has been going in a cycle and we really need to stop it ASAP.

If Van Persie leaves this summer i wont blame him. Think about it you have been patient with a team for over 5 years trying to break into the first team. When you do (3years ago) you arw very good but you work with the team and stay loyal. He has 2 years left of being world class then he is another decent striker. He wants his family to see him lift trophies. All thos legends you hear about from 30 years ago, they won trophies Van Persie just has the one. I also didnt mind it when Cesc left as he took a wage cut to push it through, he did it for passion. Something that lacks in the modern game. But then people like Nasri are just disgusting, after all it was his fault we didnt get a trophy( partly obviously) he had a dip of form in the second half of the season and when you are top class player and in the top 3 of your team , that shouldnt happen. Anyway, he learnt his lesson, he had another bad gane against Wigan and was subbed off early.

Let’s face reality and fact- RVP will leave us at the end of another probably average season. Fact! I am not a pessimist but have been an avid Gunners suppoter for nearly 40 years and have never seen the team so disorganised, panic and not show true courage out on the pitch. Where does the problem lie? I can only think with Wenger, who was in my opinion one of the greatest managers ever, until now. He has shown constant stubborness and made uneccessary excuses about referees and pitch performances. Enough is enough. The whole world can see how far we have been leftbehind by not replacing Fabregas and Nasri, forget the reasons they left, by making serious purchases in the summer transfer window. Surely a manager of AW’s stature would have had players lined up to sign and would not go into panic buying mode so late in the month ofr transfer?! Us fans take abuse year in and year out as we don not perform at the level we should be at because we don’t buy quality any more, it’s all about profit. We don’t have depth in our squad and the Board just seem to amble along taking season ticket holders money and not having a care in the world.
STOP THE ROT NOW! Get the quality defenders, attacking midfielder and a top class striker. We have the money but does Wenger have the balls?????!!!! Don’t end up like so many other half baked managers when you could still be a Legend!!

Like I said months ago, Wenger has been planning to sell RvP for a while now. He bought Park and has hardly played him, he knows he is good but has resorted not to, for reasons I will explain shortly. Looks like Wenger will also be signing Matias Suarez next transfer window when the season is over.
When RvP leaves we will get a sh*t load of money for him, at least 25-30m. He will sign Suarez for under 10. He will then say, ‘oolala’ we bascially have two new strikers, Park is like a new signing and Suarez and we just made 15m profit off RvP. Wenger has turned into a sly businessman, that’s all he is good for these days. He looks after the board and they look after him extremely well. I will continue to support Arsenal, but my passion will be into my favourite Scottish team Celtic until all this BS is resolved. I also have joined that facebook page, big up to the guys who started it. It is the first step into us fans taking Arsenal back to how it was and supposed to be.

WE CAN TALK AND DISCUSS THE MATTER AS LONG AS WE WANT….
The fact is, in order to implement any changes at Arsenal right now, we have to finish below the CL spot and the Uefa Cup to see something sensible happening.

As long as we qualify for a european cup, we will have the same routine and same frustration next year.
AW will come with the excuse that Uefa is good enough.
Basically, the Arsenal purse needs to be hit so the board, the shareholders, the chairman and AW will have to assess.
In order to mess their precious finance, Arsenal need to be finish 7th…

Remember last year, when we were struggling… He said, and I quote ” it is not like we are fighting for relegation”…!!! The “balls” on this guy and the arrogance…!!

How do you expect to keep your best players or sign top class ones??
We are not an attractive club anymore ( sorry for saying so , but it is the cruel truth ) we do not pay the wages needed to bring top class players.

Concerning Van Persie, he will be reaching 29 years old and this is the age of anger… He is not going to stay at Arsenal, not because he does not love the club ( I don’t care what you people say, but Nasri did love the club ), but because he just wants to win titles.

Any top club would want Van Persie and will be willing to pay top money to have ( Transfer fees and wages )…. Since we are so cheap, we won’t keep him and the board ( and the cronies ) will be more than happy to take the cash.

WE CAN INFLUENCE THE PROCESS OF THE CLUB, BY NOT BUYING MERCHANDISING PRODUCTS, BY REDUCING THE ATTENDANCE AT THE EMIRATES AND BY SHOWING HOW DISGUSTED WE ARE BY THE DISPLAYS AND THE FACT THAT AW HAS TOTALLY LOST IT.

The sad thing is not about went RVP is going to leave us but what he has achieved with us. Sad but True the club he finished his twilight years fill with tropyless but life must go on they are professional. The club itself is in the horrible state NO TROPHY. What make it pain so much is the player that serve them well like RVP,Csec,Henry, Nasri, Clinchy. It the CLUB no ambitions. Just a little effort to buy 2-3 world player all of this legend surely leave us with smile in the face. The Board, the Manager is to BLAME. Period.

Manchester City are “convinced” Robin van Persie will quit Arsenal this summer to join them, according to reports.

It’s claimed the Eithad side are preparing a £30m bid for RvP, who has 18 months left on his Emirates contract and is stalling on signing a new one.

City believe the Dutch striker, 28, is ready to move and that the Gunners will sell him rather than lose him for nothing, says The Sun.

The paper also reckons City will offer van Persie £200,000-a-week, a massive hike on his current wages of £80,000-a-week.

We shall see, but after wenger said if we lose Nasri and Cesc we cant be considered a club with ambition anymore I fully expect a transfer to happen. Its clear Wenger has no real class targets that is going to persuade RVP to stay this appears to be his swan song.

latest news is Abidal would never sign for Arsenal. Its obvious anyway we wont pay the wages he would want.

I know RvP isn’t like Nasri and will leave for city. Then again he wouldn’t want his family to move with him to a whole new country, he’s just that type of guy. I really don’t know about his future unless Wenger shows some god damned ambition and buys some players.

Yes, Wenger has been successful in the past and no one can take that away from him but right now i cant see Arsenal moving forward with the current regime. Big changes are needed. Bring in Usmanov and a new manager to clear out all the shite players and sign some world class ones. Only then can Arsenal be in the positions they were a few years ago challenging for trophies. Im sick of watching an average team

If this comment is true its laughable. Why say if he leaves its because he wants to win something. RVP can win what he wants to at arsenal if AW and the board realise that money needs to be spent in the right areas. i dont get it dont give him the opportunity to leave if RVP does stay (and i hope with my arsenal crested heart he does) AW and the board owe it to him themselves and us the fans to address the problem that has been rotting this club for years and spend money on players who will make a difference and put us back where we belong. By all means harvest the talent of the youngsters but find the balance between young and exp with the quality to win trophies and be in the top competitions (Yes the last comment is aimed at you mr hill-wood)

i actually feel sorry for our captain he shouldnt be in the position wer he feels that he has to leave the club he loves to win trophies wenger and the board should be ashamed of themselfs were talking about a man who has pretty much said “i will stay if we show desire to win and sign some quality” yet we sit around and hope that he will stay at the end of his contract. arsenal has turned in to a joke. how have we gone from a glorious and VICTORIUS club to a club that funds the luxurious life of a yank its disgusting, i dont blame all the crapy players either i blame the divs that brought them in, lets be honest if you wer crap and arsenal gave you a contract you would snap there hands off. i BELIEVED in wenger as much as everyone else but im sorry how long are we gonna tolerate all his silly decisions purely because of wat he WAS cappable of, yes he has done so much for arsenal and yes he did change football but he hasnt for 7 years now. at this rate it will be 10 years without a trophy but thats fine because look at what hes done for us!! wake up fellow gooners we need change and we need it now!!!!

    Dear Fans,

I think what the Board and Management need to do, is to address the the reason why RVP wants to leave. The same reason that made Henry leave is the same reason RVP is leaving.

Once Van Persie is sold that will be the last of the world class players that the club has made mega bucks on. Vermaalen and Wilshire could command a big fee if they had a full good season. The rest???!!!
