Wenger – Almunia returns but Szczesny stays Number One

Posted on January 28, 2011 by admin

The Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Manuel Almunia has returned to the Arsenal squad after a prolonged absence through injury, but he will not automatically return as first choice in the Gunners squad.

“He has been injured for a long time and in a situation like that you feel jobless,” Wenger said.

“Of course I feel for him. In fairness his elbow injury was against West Brom and that was a long, long time ago. He came out in the second half, but I left him the choice at half-time. I asked him how he felt and credit to him.

“After that when he was nearly ready he injured his ankle in training (on the day of Man Utd game).

“He said he wanted to stay on [against West Brom]. I do not reproach him for that at all and credit to him. But you never know, when you have a little injury you feel you can go on.

“You reporters thought that he would not play again, but I never thought that.

“We have four keepers – Szczesny, Fabianski, Almunia and Mannone. All the four are good. You can always look and feel sorry for the three who are not playing.”

Lukasz Fabianski is the latest of the four to sustain an injury, and Wenger explained that he could see no reason why he should demote the young Pole Wojciech Szczesny after a string of fine performances since being promoted to the first team. “At the moment Wojciech is number one,” he said.

“He has done nothing for me to take him out, but I can rotate the goalkeepers.

“In the cups I play sometimes different goalkeepers as well.”

It wll be very interesting to see which two names are on the team list when Wenger has all three of his keepers fit to choose from…

Venger Almunia has to be nr one he has more experience I have the young goalkeeper he is good but I have seen that he has done mistakes for example when we played agains Manchester United his mistake was childish.

lety me first say that arsene is the best coch in the world. let me next sa that this almunia shit has become an ego thking with him cuase he wants to make sure that each of his players become great. he does nopt realize that he is not perfectin selcting youth and sometimes he f*cks it up. shea and mannone would both be better options

You may blame Woj for that Park goal, but he stopped Anderson point blank, stopped a Rooney chip, and prevented a Rooney penalty by beeing tall and intimidating Rooney. Woj stays, needs to work on when he comes out on crosses, but im not worried when he’s in goal, with Almunia, you never know what stupid sh1t he may do

No you can’t rotate the keepers. Wojciech owns the goal and he totally deserves it.

Little more strength & depth at the back, but I think we have a class squad. Amazing how our team has come from practically nothing – every player (bar Sqila) has made their name nowhere more prominently than at the Arsenal, and we’re still beating the best to hit top spots! Szczesny is good- man u wasn’t a big mistake on his part- the ball deflected- if it didn’t he would have been perfectly positioned to save it.

It’s about time. Now, I hope Wally doesn’t blow his chance and pull a Flappy or an Aloofnia.

well done Szczesny. been a big fan of the firey kid since he was let out on loan last season. he’s young and will make mistakes as young keepers do but who’s to say he won’t become a great one? remember how young casillas, kahn, and dare i say (as an american-don’t judge me lol) keller?!

and i love how wenger said that the young pole has done nothing to prompt him to drop him. good to hear b/c i believe he’s the best keeper on our books.

im all in for shezzy.. letting him up to mistakes provide valuable expiriences. future and period. fabianski would step up to a healthy competition later.

as for the time being, almunia would take the responsibility giving the real squad expirience to shezzy. its nice if shezzy would gear up for the spot because somehow, he reminds me of the great dane. but who knows..

wengers spot on with his goally tactics we have probably the best grup of four keepers ith each having number 1 credentias who can boast that? also wats the rush in getting rid of almunia ? he`s made the dd mistake there an now but he is a decent keeeper whos aso had highs remember the season he had wen eduardo broke down he was fantastic what if we look bak dwn the line 2 years time and sczezny mkes the odd mistake are we going to condem ths? evry 1 has room for improvement giv almunia a brake he is as good as fabianski so therefore he should also contend for the number 1 spot this will help to push all our keepers
