Wenger – Arsenal are Big Boys now!

Arsene Wenger promised at the end of last season that he would be trying to add some height to the team for those awkward games against Stoke et all, who thrive on the big physical side of the game, and it looks like he is satisfied with his work.
After the win against Norwich Wenger said: “One of the advantages – I said before the game – is that I have not seen such a tall Arsenal team at the back,”
“You have Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen and Santos who are tall.
“I look a bit lost because there are no small players in there.”
Does Wenger, who is 6ft 3in tall, now have to stand on a box when he does his team talks now!

the height of a player is not relevant…
if he can read a game and is quick agile and mobile it more than compensates for the fact that he may have to be fitted with a warning light for low-flying aircraft…
give me the former over a giant statue every time – these days a ball playing savvy defender is as important to a team as a 20 goal a season striker
hopefully PM will aclimatise to the pace & physicality of the EPL to become that player – with the added bonus of his height
Opinions divided. What do you think?

Could a defender be too tall?

@Gary,
I seem to sense a contradiction in your comment. If the height of a player is not relevant like you opened up with, how come PM’s height will be an added bonus like you end up with?
It seems to me that AW has definitively tackled the issue of the size of his players especially at the back line which has often been an Achilles heel when such teams like Stoke and Bolton are our opponents. We cannot but commend him for having come round to address this which is what we have often complained about. BTW Santos definitely fits the bill of a ball playing savvy defender. So kudos to you AW.

the best thing and the worst thing about Santos is his Brazilian flare… if he pulls it off he’s in, and can usually pick a pass… if he fails he’s usually left in the dust with a massive gap exposed down the left forcing TV across the line and leaving PM to make big decisions.
I think if he drops a bit of weight and works on his speed he could easily be our first choice this season.

@ Egwu di ya
‘hopefully’
i think you will agree both Mert & Santos though very much taller – are still the ‘unfinished articles’
the way PM allowed himself to brushed aside on saturday is my point

Good to have a bit off height no doubt. Our defence is not rock solid (yet?), but at least we are now capable of defence!
The issue at the moment is how our attack up front looks in the future. It is all good that RVP is on fire, but if we were to lose him (through injury or if he regrettably departs), then what happens for us up front? This needs to be addressed, or we will be in the same kind of predicament as we were with out defence at the start of our season. AW has to remain one step ahead of what transpires in regard to our team shape. I think if he doesn’t address this now, it will come to haunt him in the future.

Height is an important factor.i agree wid wenger.prmr leaguer is all about physique stamina n speed + technic (arsenal’s beauty).But we really need gotze in midfield.buy 1 central defence ,1 attacking midfldr,1 forward.needless to say chamakh loan, bendtner out, give more chances to park .podoloski in would be great.
LOVE ARSENAL

@Gary,
‘unfinished articles’ in my view is not in the sense of their not being consummate talented footballers, but in the sense of their needing to get used to the EPL. This can only be attained with their getting play time and keeping the mistakes (which thankfully have been minimal) during this learning curve few. Their innate talent cannot be doubted only that they need to adapt to the English game.

we are happy with the recent form of the great Arsenal team,honestly credit must be given to Wenger for his magic wand in making the dried bones rise again.If the good run must continue especially from january where problem of injuries beckons,the need to fortify the attack with prolific strikers is very important.This will not only give R V P some good rest but also prepare for eventualities.My dear coach Wenger, don’t be carried too far with this good results but learn from the past and prepare for the task ahead. Move swiftly and sign Gotze and Sow since the defence is a little stable.

Guys. Your opinion. 50m to spend
Defenders: Vertongen (12m) OR Subotic (22m) OR Cahill (7m)
Mid Fielders: Gotze 30m, Eva Banega (8m) Garcouff (8m), Lucas Baglia – injured (6m), Etienne Capoue (12m), Marco Reus (15m), Adam Johnson (9m)
Strikers/Wingers: Podolsky (20m), Juan Vergas (10m), Llorente (20m), Solomon Kalou (7m)
Prescribe an affordable and effective option with a max of 50m considering that Gervinho will be away in January
