Wenger – Arsenal are still in the title race

Posted on December 28, 2012 by admin

Having seen his Arsenal team finally win three League matches in a row, Arsene Wenger firmly believes that the Gunners could easily catch up with Man United at the top of the League if they could how a little more consistency.

Wenger said: “It is down to consistency,”

“Christmas showed us that Chelsea and Manchester City are not out of reach. The team that is consistent with their results will get there.

“Man United don’t look out of reach if you look at the way the games go. But again they manage to win at home in the last minute. They have the quality to score goals but they do concede so it is open. But at the moment they are the most consistent.”

Although Arsenal only beat Wigan last week by a single penalty, Wenger was very pleased with the commitment shown by the team. He continued: “It was an important three points because they [Wigan] came into the game on the back of an important win at Reading. For us to have two away wins just before playing at home over Christmas was vital.

“We were less impressive than we had been at Reading going forward but we were well organised and disciplined. So it was good to get the three points with this type of performance.

“We have built a team who showed fantastic promise at the start but have stuttered a little bit. Now there is a block of unity and understanding. They know the way to play. That can give us the consistency between January and May.”

Arsenal are currently in 7th place but with a game in hand on most teams above us. If we are going to really challenge for the title we really need to win our next few games first! Bring on Newcastle!

  16. I think we can be in the title race, but only if we buy quality in Jan. If Wenger has 35 mil to spend in Jan then he must go out and buy Fellaini and Jovetic. Their combined price should be around 35 but maybe because of demand it might hike up to 40, which can also be compensated by the sales of Chamakh, Arshavin and Squillaci. Also Santos must be sold and Luke Shaw can be his replacement.

Why inconsistency in the team? The team lacks quality and winning is lack. If Wenger keeps dreaming he will be surprised to miss even top 5 finish. Everton, Sunderland and West Ham are fighting hard. Even the so called bottom Norwich are an upcoming force.

Next week we want to know which quality players Wenger has signed if not let him go.We keep on blaming the board but now Wenger has the money.

Have some faith. We probably won’t buy much in Jan because not a lot of good players are available. But Wenger is building the bass for a very very good team. We are probably 3 players away. I know seven years is a long time. But have faith. It will happen. And when it does (next season) we’ll be on a roll for at least the next 3 seasons.

People who actually think Wenger believes Arsenal are still in the title race have got to be kidding themselves. Wenger is an intelligent coach who would say such things to alleviate the pressure from his squad and in turn instill more confidence in them. We could be playing Real Madrid, Barca and Bayern in the same league and Wenger would still say the same. It’s kind of demoralizing for the players if the manager were to just straight out say, “we have no chance!” So whilst people blast Wenger for not spending and telling him to shut up, maybe they should learn a thing or two about actually managing human resources.

Arsenal need to win many games in a row to even get in the running. But how to regain consistency?

Quiz: In early Feb last season Wenger made one simple but effective move after which Arsenal went from inconsistent to winning 7 BPL games in a row?

Answer: He replaced Ramsey with Rosicky as a starter in all 7 games. You be the judge.

Oh by the way: Later that season Arteta was injured and Wenger put Ramsey back in as a starter and the shaky performances returned. You can’t make this stuff up.

But that isn’t headline grabbing enough for you guys. what he said was if we can get a consistent run who knows as united and city are beatable. simple enough. He didn’t say i believe we will win the league. He said what all optimistic fans who can do maths would say. if united lose 3 games in a row or 3 in 5 and arsenal win all five then they will be level o points with arsenal. and based on how they have played against Swansea and Newcastle you can just feel a loss is coming. city have been figured out as Reading and sunderland played the exact same way and stifled them to death. they dropped 4 points in the last 2 games.

Arsene Wenger is the only manager in the world who would say something intelligent and well thought out and still entertain abuse from everybody.

    @lifesagunner.
united have played a game more than arsenal and have 16 points. We assume the next 6 games for arsenal would happen as united play only 5. so if i assume arsenal beat west ham then its 13 points. so if united lose 3 and draw 2 they drop 13 points. if Arsenal win all 5 they gain 15 points. Thats how i came up with that. i know its simple math but judging by your comments I’m not surprised simple maths trip you up. all you need in a league is a streak to define your season.

btw in 2003 Arsenal lead united with 12 points with 10 games to go. you wanna figure out how the season ended? united won the league by 4 points. I’m pretty sure the moral of that story is the crux of the point wenger was trying to make.

That kind of reasoning is what is ridiculous. because Villa had a rough 4 days they are whipping boys, but u neglect the fact that they beat liverpool 3-1 before christmas and almost beat united in november. its like saying City is useless because they almost lost to reading who arsenal beat mercilessly or united are useless because they cannot beat swansea and qpr and southampton convincingly.

The atmosphere at the hawthorns the next game was immense. The belief is what has wba 5th in the league still.

That speaks more about the kind of people arsenal fans are than the team to be frank. If the fans can’t even feign belief why should the players try for a set of fans who have already written them off.

the same ferguson who cocked up a title after going 8 points ahead with 6 games to go, even after mancini all but admitted his team couldn’t win the league. do you know how hard that is to do. if united had won half those games they would have won the league. they had the easier fixtures too. city still had to play arsenal chelsea and united.

i said if united lost 3 out of 5. its what i calculated for you. if they lose 3 they drop 9 points. 13-9= 4. i didn’t say they would win the remaining 2. they cud draw them as they have some big games coming up. which would be realistic. so draw 2 would be 4 points dropped. you said 16 points without acknowledging arsenal have a game in hand which if they get a run of momentum like they did last season could easily win. so a 6 game winning streak in that time would mean 18 points. united have 46 now and arsenal have 30. if my hypothesis actually happened which is unlikely they would be level on points as early as january 28th.

its sad that i had to do basic arithmetic in its entirety for you to understand this.

how are they slim. its like you don’t even follow the same league. stoke has the best defence in Europe. Think about that stuff. Westbrom is 5th. Norwich beat both united and arsenal in the same month. sunderland beat city in their first and last away games of this year. United has conceded 2 or more goals in 11 of their 18 games this season and it includes games against southampton Reading and Villa. 3 of the bottom 5. reading almost heroically grabbed a point from etihad and newcastle are 13th. Anything goes this year man and what wenger was saying is true. if anyone of the teams above us go on a tottenham style run of last season and we remain consistent we have a shot. remember spurs were 13 points ahead of us at this time last season. how did that end?

How else is AW going to motivate his mediocre team for the battle to gain a top 4 spot..
Have you heard how if you aim for the top and don’t quite make it then hopefully you will be somewhere near???
AW isn’t stupid.. although he realistically knows we have no chance of the league, it isn’t out of our capacity to finish second or 3rd IF and its a big IF we can actually win say 10 out of the next 15 to put us in with a shout..
We do need a player or 2 to help us along but I doubt if this will happen..
I think we will hear AW come out at the end of January (depending on where we are currently positioned) saying ” We now have to focus on doing well in Europe and trying to finish as high as possible”
We all agree that CL elimination is a certainty, therefore top 4 will be our main aim..
    But hope springs eternal..

    A couple of points mate.

Firstly, you’re right 97/98 Man U were ahead of us and we came home. The BIG difference between now and then is that then we had a number of class, even world class, players, a defence that knew how to defend and we were consistent. Today we have nothing of the sort. This isn’t from someone who sits behind a keyboard, this is from someone who actually goes to the games.

Secondly, Wengers comments might make more sense if we were competitive. In the last 7/8 years our competitiveness has diminished year after year. As I’ve said previously talk is cheap, winning wins trophies and, to me, all this talk about Arsenal winning the title is “cheap talk”.

    @Rasta.
why should fans feign belief. What an ignorant question.
Is it ok for the whole club to feign belief?
Have you ever thought that Wenger and the board have been doing just that for the last 7 years?
You really need some football perspective geeze.
We are all fans but what have you been watching for the last 7 seasons?
It takes a special kind of denial to ignore your own eyes and ears man.
We played Man Utd already and all we got was RVP’s united shirt at half time.
No one is unbeatable but neither are we…does Bradford ring any bells?
Wenger is still in a job because fans like you are still indulging him.
