Wenger – Arsenal in contract talks with Vela, Rosicky and Gallas
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has announced that contract negotiations have begun with three more players.
Thomas Rosicky is out of contract this summer and would be free to talk to other clubs in January if he can’t come to an agreement with Arsenal, and with him now returning to full fitness, Wenger is confident that they can come to a new arrangement.
William Gallas is also on his last year, but his superb form this season alongside new-boy Thomas Vermaelen has convinced Wenger that he wants Gallas to stay on for another season at the Emirates.
Wenger said: “We are speaking with Tomas and William, and I am optimistic to find a solution for both of them.”
Carlos Vela is still only a reserve, but he can expect more first team starts now that Nicklas Bendtner and Robin Van Persie are out injured. He still has 18 months left on his contract, but Wenger thinks now is the time to begin extension talks. Wenger also admitted that Vela was the main reason that he didn’t delve into the transfer market to replace Emanuel Adebayor in the summer.
“We’ve had no offers for Carlos and we are extending his contract at the moment.” said Wenger.
“The problem we have is that we have some very good young players, but the players who are in front of them are also young.
“But Carlos was the reason I didn’t replace Emmanuel Adebayor in the summer. He’s that good. “He’s like Robbie Fowler, in that he needs very little time to make a decision in the box, he is very relaxed when he finishes.”
Arsenal seem to spend much more time concentrating on extending existing contracts nowadays rather than buying players, and the policy seems to be working at the moment. We are all still waiting to find out if Fran Merida is going to finally sign his new contract. If Vela and Merida both sign then the only reason i can think of for Wenger to buy in the summer is if a top class goalkeeper becomes available.

We should look to Vela’s country for a world-class goalie that’s ripe for the take. Guillermo Ochoa, who plays for Mexico’s national squad and for “Club America”, is just amazing. I’ve seen his videos on YouTube and I still can’t fathom how he manages to get to so many impossible shots.
