Wenger – Arsenal were jaded and perhaps lucky, but it’s three points!

Posted on December 22, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger was well aware that his Arsenal team were given a very difficult game by Aston Villa last night, and it was only a goal from substitute Yossi Benayoun that sealed the points three minutes from time, but Wenger was pleased that the squad kept fighting right up to the end.

“Villa were dangerous but first I must say two things. We had two difficult away games where we had to give absolutely everything just over Christmas, physically. In the first half we controlled the game quite well and in the second half when they came back to 1-1 we had quite a difficult period. Then we stabilised the game and in the last 15 minutes you could feel we were on top again.

“I can only congratulate Villa – they played well, gave everything and again it was a very intense game. In the end we got three very late points that are vital for us. We were a bit unlucky on Sunday and today maybe a bit lucky. Overall it was important to re-start with a win tonight. But if Villa continue to play like that then they will go up in the table, they had an outstanding game.

“Our spirit is exceptional and that’s why we came from a bad start to the season to such a strong run. You could see that some legs were a bit jaded from Sunday, and some minds in the speed of the decision making. But we still kept going and there is an exceptional attitude and spirit in the side.

“Tonight, very unusually for us we scored from two set-pieces, that is basically historical!”

Whatever happens tonight between Tottenham and Chelsea, the Gunners will have moved closer to the TOP FOUR with a hard-earned win. Bring on another six points against Wolves and QPR and some dropped points from our rivals and thinks are certainly beginning to look rosier for Arsenal……

Yossi benayoun should be first over ramsey in the pecking order he was fantastic and made an inpact….he plays well and scores goals

  2. Aimar says:

Song, Ramsey, and Arteta have done an amazing job for us but seeing the difference Rosicky and Benayoun made was a good sign for us. It gives more options at the moment..Gotta be happy about that

  3. stepper says:

Everyone in the pub called for Ramsay and Gervinho to be subbed early in the second half cos they just did not seem to be in the game. The same changes were needed against Man City in order to get something out of the game. Yossi is still fresh is on a good vein of form and so is Chamberlain but Wenger will just not make the call.

Rest Gervinho or look for alternatives since he will not be around in January. Whatever the reason, he needst to think about his role on the pitch cos all I see is good runs with no end product.

vermaelen was totally uninterested yesterday. He looks angry being played at full back. Watch the match at mancity again, he started making real impact when he was shifted to the middle. Wenger just get us 2 proper attacking full back. Van der weil(6 mil is what valencia want to pay for him and he will jump at the opportunity to be a gunner) and leighton baines(he need to play at a big club and in the UCL to be capello!s first choice over cashri) and send both jekinson and gibbs on loan they can come back aftes 2 to 3 years considering both santos and sagna are 28.

Opinions divided. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 6

    im not a rosicky hater.i think he shud be ahead of rambo.loves his cmbination with arteta. last two games for gervinho bfore he goes to African Cup.hope he wil prove it by the next two games.song wil be back an thats good. song,arteta and rosicky in the midfield is lookin good.sory no offence for rambo. he keep misses the chances.losing the ball often.twisting around.no end product.jst sometimes on hes day. i jst rate him for hes hardwork.he shud cme as a acond half sub since he mke an impact like he done to marseille.jst ddnt see it nw.yes he cn developed further bt sory he jst kinda anoyed me.try this again wolves. we shud rest one of these-kos or tv5. i think tv5 shud being rested n bring on as a sub;

    szc
    coquelin-mert-kos-miquel
    song-arteta
    gervinho-rosicky-benayoun
    rvp

bring tv5,rambo and walcott in the scond half.that wud mkes an impact!

If you’re right about Vermaelen then that is not very proffessional or befitting of a leader in the team. Surely he understands that he is playing there due to the injuries and will be temporary until the transfer window opens in 9 days.
I think AA has 1 foot out the door already. Wenger will look to buy an attacking creative mid for Gervinho when he leaves.

I think its time AW rested some members of the starting 11 just to keep the momentum. Rosicky and Yossi had a great impact, maybe he can start with them and let Ramsey rest.unfortunately we don’t have a choice but to play RVP, hopefully the coach will buy a striker that can hit the ground running in January. Anyway, I’m happy with the 3 points.

  9. Big Gun says:

@ Msomi finally someone else sees that Ramsey doesn’t quite have what it takes. He isn’t bad, and very occasionally he has sublime touches but overall he is too inconsistent. Apparently Inter Milan or one of those Italian teams offered 16m for him. I would sell him and Arshavin in Jan, buy Gotze and another world class striker. We need better players than Ramsey if we wish to beat the best.

Frimpong had a shocker of a game. I was really disappointed in him because we all know what he is capable of. Probably the lack of experience that crept up on him last night.

Arteta is like a Xavi type player, keeps the ball rolling but doesn’t really do anything prolific. Still he is consistent and that is what is most important. I would like to see Rosicky and Benayoun played more regularly too as they made such a huge impact.

Overall a sub par performance from us, but honestly luck has been against us for a long time. It’s about time we had it on our side for a change.

Also Wenger please give AOC and Ryo a chance. Wenger should try RvP and AOC as strikers and keep Walcott on the wing. AOC is fast, stronger and can shoot with both feet. I would also have Ryo on the left wing instead of the unenthusiastic Arshavin while Gerv is away.

Coquelin, Kossie, Polecat and Verminator (besides the blunder of a header) played really well.

does nobody but me realise that mertesacker is awful? too slow for the premier league and doesnt even attack set pieces, it was his fault completely for the goal yesterday. How a premier league let alone arsenal defender can back out of a challenge is absolutely ridiculous. Should have bought samba/cahill.

It was a really sweet win against Aston Villa very important 3 points!!!

But I must say and I know people won’t agree with me – I am not saying Ramsey hasn’t played well in many games but I think Rosicky and Benayoun should get more chances, Ramsey feels many times very average and many players out there could replace him – Still he is very young and has I great future but I think he has played every game for the Arsenal and he misses so many chances to score goals and many times they are vital goals for us to score.

Come on Arsenal keep up the good work!!

I honestly am disappointed from Ramsey. He is a hard worker but his bad decision making and lack of creativity are not on the level Arsenal player should be at.
I would say that we miss a creative middlefielder…even Arteta ( as good and consistent as he is) is not providing the balls in the box.

    @ Igor Panov

Too right mate. I agree 100%. Ramsey and Arteta’s work rate are valued but we need that killer passer to open the space in the box for strikers. Wenger knows this all too well, hence his search for a creative player.

I believe Rosicky should take Ramsey’s spot for a little while. He is in better form and frankly I’m getting sick of Ramsey’s missed opportunities at goal.

Thank God we got the win. I must the say I don’t like the Arsenal dress what they wore for me that is unlucky remember when they wore that dress code we lost against MANU U 8-2 may be you guys think that i am superstitious.

Yesterday we nearly went for a draw thanks to Youssi who brought us the points. I think in my opinion they should give him more chance to play he already scored for Carling CUP Champions and now Premier. For me he is good player.

I would prefer gunners wearing RED and WHITE.

GUNNERS FOR LINE COME ON LADS WE CANNOT GIVE UP.

WENGER BUY DEFENDERS AND STRIKER TO REST RVP AND SUPPORT HIM.

  19. Gunnersince15 says:

Even the most ardent Arsenal supporter would have to agree that we were very average, last night against Villa. The substitutions changed the whole face of the game and we got the three points we desperately needed. What was really evident was how much we missed Song. His drive and distribution is quite often the difference between us and a lot of the top teams. Last night he was sorely missed and it showed in our overall game. It is imperative that we purchase a striker and a defender, in the window, if we are to maintain our challenge.

  20. tommy says:

I need some help on why he bought Asharvin on again. HES USELESS.

And im also getting annoyed with mertesacker and Ramsey. Mert is far to slow. And Ramsey needs a break, he was nothing more than average last night.

As for Frimpong he is still losing the ball alot, which i think is what caused the start of their goal AGAIN. Shows you how important Song is for our mid-field.

Aston Villa are DREADFUL yet we only just scrapped it again, from a brilliant header from Super Jew.

Man U smashed Fulham 5-0. We should have been looking for a similar result if we want to consider ourselves a top four team.

Lucky win for us, but this game just showed again how much important Alex Song is to us!!! (He didn’t play against Man U as well) He is equally (if not the most)important to RVP!!!
