Wenger – Arsenal were superior but made one mistake

The Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger bemoaned his team’s failure to kill off AZ Alkmaar last night, and said the team need to focus for the full 93 minutes.

“We feel frustrated because we felt superior to this team.” he said.

“We had a good performance and couldn’t take advantage of our chances. And in the final minute we got caught. That’s the Champions League.

“You need focus for 93 minutes. We made maybe one mistake and we paid for it.

“We had the opportunity just before to score the second goal but got caught offside.

“Then we had the ball in the box. Away from home sometimes you get these kind of goals.”

He also felt that Carlos Vela should have been awarded a penalty in the second half, which would have assured Arsenal all three points.

“I think yes, that looked clear because he was in front. It will be interesting to watch again.” he said.

But he was not unduly worried, considering that Arsenal still only need one win from their last three games to be assured of qualification.

“We are still in a strong position,” said Wenger. “We have three games left, two at home, and I believe to win one game will qualify us.”

“What I want is for us to continue to play like we do, focus to play better. In football, you have to produce the maximum result with your game, and against AZ that did not happen.”

“You know that in the last five minutes of a Champions League match, anything can happen,” said Wenger.

“They have thrown everything forward and felt they could only score on a set-piece, and that is what happened.

“It is frustrating because we looked closer to scoring a second than conceding, but credit to them, they did fight well and went until the last minute.”
