Wenger blames the referee for every dropped point this season!

Posted on January 03, 2012 by admin

Arsene Wenger saw his team go from 1-0 up with six minutes to go against Fulham, and then collapse to a 2-1 defeat with the winner coming in the second minute of added time.

Johann Djourou was sent off for a second yellow 13 minutes before the end which led Wenger to bring on Sebastien Squillaci to shore up the beleaguered defence but not even the mighty Super Squill could stop Fulham getting two goals in the last ten minutes.

Arsene Wenger said his team were tired after playing two days previously and slammed the referee for giving Arsenal “nothing at all” and cited FOUR games where Arsenal should have got a penalty.

“I think it was 100 per cent a penalty on Gervinho from Senderos in the first half. The referee had a massive influence on the game like that. We have played many games recently where if it had gone our way we would not have been in trouble and would have stayed with 11 on the pitch.

“You want the right decisions in a game of that importance. But I do not want to speak about that anymore. We had the chances to kill the game off before that and to win. I think it’s very unlucky for us to lose the game with 10 men. When you see the game today that we finished with 10 men, it’s very difficult to take. That makes a massive difference when you have played 48 hours before. It’s too difficult.

“There was too much at stake in the game today, we needed absolutely everything to go for us, to be right. We are guilty because we still gave two goals away, I felt, in a stupid way and we didn’t take our chances. Nothing went for us from the referee today, nothing at all. We cannot change that and we have to live with it unfortunately.

“We should have had a clear penalty in the last game against QPR with a clear handball, a penalty at Man City and we had a penalty at Villa Park. You should not ask me, I don’t know.”

But the fact is that Arsenal don’t have enough talent in depth to rotate players, and yet again failed to kill off the game after taking the lead. And he can’t say that Arsenal were tired from playing two days ago, because Fulham were playing the same day but still managed to fight until the end of the game!

I thinks it was Wengers mistake…. he played the same team again…. everyone was tired and looked sloppy… i think Wenger should have made some changes in the team….

And blaming the referee after the game doesnt change anything…. it cannot change the result, can it??

Can’t blame ref’s all the time. Agree, insufficient quality depth. Crisi now in defence and need striker who knows where net is. AW use the money you have- Vertonghen,Samba or Cahill, Podolski, Hazard, Gotze the list is endless……. We can’t have a good run and then lose because of 9 injuries. Gooner for Life, but getting pissed off that other top clubs are buying really good players. We must stay in touch and in the market.

Buy higher caliber players Wenger! Insanity is defined as doing something over and over again expecting a different result. You cant keep buying young, cheap players from the damn pawn shop and expect to bring home silverware! Sign players who are expierenced, not young, know what the hell they are doing, and maybe games like this one will have a better result. You wont have to blame the ref for his atrocious mistakes everytime you lose. Although the refs were horrid today…

I agree with some members that a lot of the articles on the site are just focusing on the negative aspects.

The way the ref called the Fulham game it doesn’t matter who would have played we would still have lost. On ocassion his linesman had to overrule his decision because his first inclination was to give the call to Fulham.

Yes Gervinho should have scored but Senderos did not get the ball and that makes it a penalty. On the other end, Zamora falls under minimal contact outside the box with a covering defender and he gives Djourou a second yellow for only his second foul of the game?

I have to agree with Wenger on this one. All we want is a fair game nothing more. Against Man City we had 3 decent shouts for penalties and a legitimate goal ruled offside. How is that ever in Wenger’s control?

RVP n Gervinho should have been listed in subs list for late attacking impact in game. Where is Park?

Also Djourou and Walcott are not good enough. If we cannot attract who we want, bring more kids in like Coquelin. He showed heart and determination. the ref was wrong in denying us a penalty & sending off djorou. but, lets be honest we could have finished it off in the 1st half & didnt, especially gervinho, who had THREE chances in the 1st 15 minutes. we didn’t take our chances, we got punished as simple as that.
this is not happening for the first time & i just can’t make out how many such defeats will it take to knock some sense into the players.
we obviously need to spend to bring in big names, in order to convince rvp to stay & challenge for the FA cup, let alone the UCL.

  20. Big Gun says:

The buck stops with Wenger. Everytime we lose he blames the ref! He waves his arms in the air and carries on when it is HIS fault. Honestly the only world class players we have in our squad are Sczcesny, Santos, Vermalaen, Kossie, Sagna, Wilshere, Song, RvP, Ox and maybe Gervinho. 4 of those players are injured. The rest are NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be in Arsenal, honestly. And who picks and buys those players? Arsene Wenger. Our midfield looked out of joint, Arteta too one paced, Ramsey loses the ball way too often and is slow. Walcott had a shocker. If our midfield and wingers do not play well, how on earth do we expect RvP to score goals? Gervinho also needs to learn how to shoot, he does so well and then flops.

The remedy to this whole situation is to buy Podolski (support for RvP,) Gotze (play him alongside Jack and Song) and Samba/Vertonghen (Our defense is a shambles).
Sell Walcott to Juventus (20m), Arshavin to his old club (15m), Ramsey to Inter (16m is what they offered). I won’t mention the other deadwood because we can’t sell them unless clubs are interested can we? With the sales of those 3 players alone we can afford Gotze and partially Podolski. Then if it’s not TOO MUCH TO ASK THE BOARD, we fork out for Vertonghen or Samba.

Too long has the mighty Arsenal settled for mediocre players who just cannot get the job done. Games like these against Wolves and Fulham were crucial. We would be right next to Spurs if we had won them. Wenger needs to buy in Jan, forget loans because all that is going to do is disrupt the team when they have to leave again.

Honestly, though, that red card was RIDICULOUS. Gervinho may have gone down easily, but he was at least FOULED enough to stall him and ensure he wasn’t able to get a shot off. That should be enough for a penalty. But no, Zamora falling like a little girl as soon as Djourou touched him was enough to warrant a second yellow/red. Only the most obvious of fouls were given to Arsenal, and then again not all. When Coquelin was bulldozed over near the sideline? No foul. I digress, though, there’s no real excuse for a loss. Once again, should have finished the game much earlier with another goal or two. Changes need to be made, and that can only be done if there is money spent well this January window.

We need hazard/neymar, gotze/neymar, podolski/benzema/higuain/pato, Vertongen/taiwo and possibly mvilla. Promote miqual, miyaichi, ox, Bartley, frimpong and coq all as subs as they are all hungry and have real talent. This will allow us to bring talent off the bench and have cover for each position. It will also allow us to rotate.we need our players to play together for a long time like Barcelona as it brings in great success. Is unlikely but this will allow is to dominate Europe once they have played together.

‘Wenger blames the ref for every point dropped this season’ and it is true, the refs have made some catastrophic errors, many of which have cost us the game and the refs have been against us on more occasions than Wenger has had a moan. What we really need is some form of performance tables for refs with relegation and promotion so that only the most consistent refs are making the vital decisions. Making this promotion and relegation battle with premier league and chamionship would be unfair on the championship however so I would suggest the Premier League insisting on more refs (currently only 16) and using them as back up refs, 3rd man etc… rotating them based on performance.

Do Barca need the refs help? Of course not, their football gets every ref onside. They dont pass for the sake of passing. They punish with posession. Why don’t we? Does Wenger make them scared to shoot? If they dont hit the target will they get fined? I have never seen a team play so much around the box and never get a shot off? If you don’t buy a ticket you won’t win the lottery!!!

Also why is Arteta taking free kicks? RVP is the free kick king. Even if the free kick is on the left RVP can do better.

What was the rationale of buying Camberlain 18m pounds when he cannot make it to the substitution bench.

AW stop alaways shifting the blame ie no enough resting time, bad refreeing when they all apply to all teams. it reminds us of the old saying that”A bad craftsman always blames his tool”.

AW’s main weakness is that he has degenerated into a poor listener, decision maker and cannot learn from the past mistakes.

If it was not because of the 8-2 punishing by Man U and pressure from the fans, trust me he was not going to buy any additional players at the last minute.

    Dear Gooners,
I have read your views and opinions on ways going forward but I have a few questions of my own.
To begin I do not, and will never accept the excuse of players being tired.
They are supposed to be highly trained professional athletes so if they can’t cope with two games in three days then they are either not trained to the level they are supposed to be (which would explain the many injuries we get) or they just can’t be bothered.
My opinion is that it is probably both.
Our relentless injury list cannot be down to bad luck every season. Experts say that at least two weekly trainings need to be done at the intensity of the actual games of the specific league which i doubt is the case with our lot.
Remember how shocked the Judas clichy was when he went to the first training session at city.
Going to the other point of the players not really bothering I would consider the fact that no matter how bad the players play AW will never blame them.
It is always any excuse that gets them scot free and blames everyone else.
So step back and think about it.
Consider yourself a manager with a workforce that does not deliver but that same workforce knows that no matter how useless they are they will never get a bollocking and will still get full pay.
Do you really think they will bother?
If you add to that the fact that so many players are played out of position then you realise that it all adds up to misery for us fans.
As long as AW is too stubborn to admit that it is time to change things around, he might end up being the change himself.

I hope that I am wrong but I can’t see us on TOP 4 we have very tough games in January our next game is Swansea on their pitch and they haven’t lost on their pitch.

We have MAN U MAN C and I am really concerned here. I don’t know where is Park and why Wenger is not playing OX.

However whatever happens we should support our team but lets hope RVP does not leave otherwise this club will be into pieces again.

I hope I am wrong in prediciting that we will not be on TOP 4 we should have won all the games with Wolves Fulham home and Away we gave away those points. Gervino and Walcott had chances all the time they can’t score.

    Red DB 10,
i agree with you about the fact that players being tired should not be excused, but not for the same reasons as yours.
during the festive period, man utd, city, chelsea & spurs, all dropped points. what does that indicate? THAT ALL TEAMS SUFFER FROM FATIGUE, NOT JUST OURS. so, your result depends on the desire that you show on the pitch, which we clearly lacked.
if we look back at our game against man city, city won simply bcoz they had much better quality on their bench.once again the fulham match exposed our lack of squad depth.
now this month is make or break for our season. if wenger (hopefully) acts quickly & gets the podolskis & sambas that we need, silverware will come. if he doesn’t (god forbid), our season will not only implode, we will also lose rvp in the summer.

Was I the only person who saw this coming? I hate to say it but last week I posted a blog, in which I said that I thought we would have trouble beating QPR, Wolves&Fulham. Why did I think that? (1)We cannot kill off games when we have a lead.(2)We waste too many chances by trying to walk the ball into the net.(3) There are players who do not give of their all.(4)We seem to be unable to cross a ball that lands in the danger area. They always go too far, or they end up going straight to a defender. (5)We do not have any alternative attacking options, other than RVP. (6)In short we are not good enough and we are carrying far too much deadwood. I looked at the bench and could not see anyone who could come on and change the game. We need to purchase another striker and a defender. Both of these players must be proven in their positions. We have to get rid of the deadwood and use the money to buy. Am I being too emotional, you bet. To watch the club I live for, looking poor against Wolves, QPR and Fulham, hurts. Please, please do something in the window, taking on a couple of loan players will just be papering over the cracks and not solving the main issues.

I saw that red card coming,& when johan got it,I knew we wud lose the match..if wenger wasn’t stupid,he shudda sub’d Djourou 4 squillaci instead of walcott.. Then take kolscieny 2 play @ RB since he can play that role as well..we just had six minutes 2 play,I guess squillaci & per wud have hung on till the final whistle..the loss was the price he had to pay for the stupid substitution..well as a realist,I don’t think we can win the premier league anymore, except we win all our remaining matches(something which is impossible)..the best we can fight for is 3rd place..As an optimist, well C’MON GUNNERS,You can Do This.

@gunners That is nonsense. The team were sh*t yesterday and Wenger also needs to rap them out (although I do blame Wenger for team selection and in game decisions). You cannot keep sugar coating everything if you want a team of champions. They get paid a FORTUNE to play football. It’s not like some school boy team that if Timmy has a bad game, it ok here an ice cream, better luck next time. No these are professional athletes, when they play like sh*t they must be rapped. There is no excuse, especially against a team like Fulham ffs. Arsenal has become a holiday for most of these players, no competition regarding their respective positions, no urgency to go the extra mile. Kossie, Szczesny and Coquelin the only ones who made me proud yesterday. The rest need a kick up the backside.

    Dear All,
I can not fault our players even if we failed to kill the game had the referee been neutral the result for sure would have been different. Lets for once accept that our players gave in everything but when decisions are made against you what can you do? How many times was RVP fouled upfront but nothing awarded zamora goes down its a red for us it hurts though but deep down fulham know they are no equals to us

Wenger needs to stop being a sore loser and admit the team weren’t good enough. Being a sore loser only makes things worse. Arsene desperatly needs to buy players in this window if we want to finish above spurs as we are light in nearly every area. Henry alone is not enough

Also wenger can’t be blamed for his selection. walcott, rvp and gervinho usually work well together so why break that up? My problem was with the subsitutes. I feel he should have added aoc so that arsenal still have some width and taken off a tired ramsey for rosicky instead.
Arsenes been in the game for along time but he can still miss things.

Where is Oxlade-Chamberlain? Where is our no.9, Park Chu Young? I thought Wenger said that Chamberlain is ready to play now.. So where was he yesterday? In those closing minutes it was when we needed someone of his talent the most. Other than that, I dream of having Vertonghen playing for us… Sorry to say this but I believe he could be better than Mertesacker, I just haven’t seen Merte at his best till now.. I only hope he proves me wrong. We could’ve killed the game off yesterday and closed the gap and get right back in the title race.. Hell Manure and ManShitty lost both of last matches and the spuds drew! I mean come on, what else do you want? But no, we severed our hopes even more -.-

I keep having high hopes, from this defeat, let us look at the positive side. Maybe Wenger will again see that his team is in dead lumber and buy some real talent. Maybe this was just one of those days. Lets hope that’s the case gentlemen.

    Gunners for life.

  56. what would wallcott do? says:

I think we should sell walcott to ac milan and buy nathan dyer from swansea (hes also quick, but has a final ball unlike woefull walcott) then we should sell the man of the match for fullham (Djourou) and the squid (who bagged himself a nice assist last match, shame it wasn’t for arsenal) poach samba and cahill, then remove all the other dead weight at our beautiful club. Replace with quality! we still need a finisher up front

Typical arsenal fans. We win “oh he’s the best and our future captain”. We lose “sell him!!!!!”. Can’t we just accept we lose due to players been tired and not enough cover for certain positions rather than attack every player. I just hope wenger will start playing the right players when the main starting line up are getting tired. We need to keep on fighting.

@general, very well said. But I expect some players to perform better than how they’re playing right now don’t you agree. Other than that, I believe there is also a severe morale problem within the team. This might be due to the shitty wage structure and/or the lack of experienced players in the team. The team CANNOT keep on depending on Robin Van Persie alone, because that would turn this whole situation into another Fabregas saga. Cycle back a few years all of you back to the late 90′s and early 00′s. Well to be honest I was a little sprog back then and I rarely watched a game of football. But looking back at the players and watching some of those games, the starting 11 always had a few players who had that certain maturity and experience to lead the newcomers. These days we have, imho just Van Persie and maybe Vermaelen. In those days; Henry, Vieira, Parlour, Keown, Bergkamp, they all had the flair to lead and emit that authorative feel. The players had a lot of people to look up to and take advice from. I don’t know, maybe what I’m saying could be total bollocks.. But I could also be right.

We now regret letting Inter beat us to Alvarez, he looks awesome for inter and reminds me of kaka. Yes the ref made bad decisions but if we would’ve taken chances nd killed the game off none of this would’ve mattered. Walcott was poor. Gervinho lacked end product, Song nd arteta were below par and squillacci… I don’t have to say anything, we all know. Coquelin and Koscielny were very good. We need taiwo, vertonghen, shaqiri and huntelaar in january and get rid off almunia, squid, djourou, diaby, denilson (permanent),arshavin, bendtner (permanent and chamakh).

Was it the ref that caused szczney to miss judge the flight of the ball when fulham equallised or the refs fault that squillaci couldnt head the ball clear instead of straight to zamora for the winner thought not its the fact we need quality instead of trying to scrape through sign some proven players and bring the quality we all know we need

I think you’re all correct. Wenger is too about the refs decisions can change the game, we cannot deny the fact that the course of the game will follow refs decisions, people moods, and a bunch of other factors. But whether or not that situation is to blame for our dropped points, that remains the question. Personally, I don’t think so, even if the refs make awful decision for our team, but if we have a mature players and disciplines too, refs decisions will not affect too much

Wenger is a 100% right referees are totally wrong, U cant tell me that U gave a wrong card to someone else and again the next day you give it to someone else.. I have been watch games two years back and I have realised referees are making wrong decisions..I must say that Either Arsenal has bad luck with the referees or there’s Just something wrong going on with the games. Something has to be done, some investigations should be done because there time where by its beyond..I done blame wenger because the referee’s decision is beyond wengers. I want to assure any Arsenal fun and all guys out there that Arsenal has the best players in the league.. Its only that referees take wrong decisions..I have the CDs of all games for the two years..Wenger could not even waste time to buy players because the buying wont the change the referees’ decisions.
