Wenger complains about Tottenham loaning Adebayor (U21s only?)

Posted on January 26, 2012 by admin

The Man City (and ex-Arsenal) striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been a godsend for Tottenham this season with nine goals that have helped Harry Redknapp’s team reach the Champions League places.

But Adebayor wasn’t allowed to face his parent side last weekend when Man City beat Spurs 3-2, Arsene Wenger thinks that this particular loan deal has given Man City an unfair advantage, as the Togo international can take points off City’s Premiership rivals, but couldn’t face Roberto Mancini’s team.

For this reason, Wenger thinks that only young players should be allowed to go to other Premiership teams. He said: “Personally, I would not ban players on loan from playing against their own clubs.

“What I would like to see in the Premier League is that you are not allowed to loan players over the age of 21.”

“At the moment it is an opportunity for some clubs to reinforce other teams, without losing ownership of the player.

“For example, if a big club sends a big player to another club in the Premier League on loan, they only have benefits.

“That player cannot face his own club, yet he could win games against their rivals.

“Therefore, I think it would be better if players over 21 didn’t go on loan in the top league.”

Wenger was then reminded that he himself had loaned the (31 year-old) Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea at the end of the summer transfer window, and he replied: “It’s true that I haven’t done that often.

“But we were on the last day of the transfer window. We knew that Jack Wilshere would need surgery.

“So we were short in midfield at that point and to find two players so late was nearly impossible for us without using a loan.

“At that time, the most important thing was just to sign him.”

So Arsenal are quite lucky that the U21 rule hasn’t been introduced then, Arsene! Maybe its not such a good idea after all……..

  8. davi says:

His idea is completely logical – I doubt city would have *sold ade to a rival, because he’s a dangerous player – but it is hypocritical for wenger to say this now. It’s not quite the same, because benayoun recently suffered a major injury, and isn’t really a “big” player, like ade, but he is an extremely talented player, and it’s conceivable he could be a dangerous player for chelsea’s rivals. For chelsea, it’s a deal that could have really helped them out, with zero risk.

What if Benayoun was clinical at poaching goals for Arsenal and had propelled us to a better positon would Arsene still complain?

  10. davi says:

Mr.Boobalo – arteta has been a wonderful signing, taking cesc’s place in the squad, albeit playing in a more defensive role. Remember that cesc barely contributed anything last season, as he was injured for most of it, and didn’t show his best form overall anyway. And *gervinho* has taken nasri’s place, and he’s been decent – very dangerous, but frustrating to watch at times. Overall, he’s not been as good as 1st-half-of-last-season-Nasri, but better than 2nd-half-Nasri; and I’d probably rather have gervinho than Nasri, given the form he’s shown for City this year, but to be fair, it’s close.
Also, Eboue never really developed into a reliable backup RB (which I do partly blame wenger for tbh – he’s an extremely talented player!), and jenkinson has actually been more reliable overall. You couldn’t really account for Jenks’ injury, and Eboue suffered plenty of injuries himself, so I don’t think he’s been a poor replacement at all.

The big miss from last season has been Wilshere. Personally, I think Coquelin should have been rotated with Ramsey, but it is understandable given that he is a much more defensive player. I think this could have helped us to minimize the loss of Jack a bit more because both are quality young players, but probably not ready to be playing every single game – ramsey has shown that he certainly isn’t, anyway.

Opinions divided. What do you think? Thumb up 12 Thumb down 6

  11. davi says:

Bring back my Arsenal – I agree, but comparatively speaking, adebayor was a sure-thing to play games and get goals for spurs, benayoun was a relatively big risk, given his recent injury and lack of playing-time. Wenger is definitely a hypocrite here, but there is a difference between the benayoun loan and the adebayor loan.

Who sold Ade to City in the first place?
Imagine City loaning out Adebayor, Toure, Clichy and Nasri to Tottenham.
    Who sold them anyway?

  13. undisclosed says:

He is wrong to complain when he is doing exactly that. but the argument is correct there is little point having a 25 man rul if you can go out and biy 200 players loan 175 out to your opponents then they cannot play against you. its called restriction of trade its like the transfer windows they are actually illehal under eec laws. if someone was to pursue it like bosman did a few years ago both rules would have to be scrapped.

I haVe often said it that wenger is know short of ideas and his finding ways to distract us from the main issues.wenger as loaned so many players in the past years who are over 21yrs of age like baptist etc.he just wants to give us another reason not to sign.this same wenger is the one that if he goes to madrid will start signing big names.madt man.

IvoryGoonz – what’s your point? they were sold to city, because they all wanted to leave and make their money, and the expectation is that city would use them to win their own games, not loan them to other clubs to sabotage their rivals.

Everyone is saying Wenger is hypocritical but when has he ever loaned out a big name player? The point he is making is that Citeh are gaining an advantage by loaning out star players that will gain points from their rivals. Wenger has not done this. Unless you consider loaning Bendtner to Sunderland is helping Arsenal!

One thing is for sure the spuds n man shitty loves arsenal players. Also, they made all their scouts redundant n constantly use goonersonline n other media to recruit players. Its probably a massive tip they received from mcdonalds, which extremely effective. But arsenal can take advantage of that by pretending they want certain players n rating them highly whilst very secretly negotiating for players they really want. Imagine city, spuds buying players that arsenal pretend to interest. Ha ha ha.

  26. And how ‘ll that(complaining about Adebayor)help us to win our games?

Rate this comment: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

  27. Big Gun says:

First of all, Wenger is just mad that Mancini exploited it first and not him. Secondly, Wenger is even madder because he doesn’t have the depth and quality in his squad to pull such a strategical move. Stop whining Wenger and start buying quality players and get rid of the sh*t in our squad.

And what is the good in complaining about it? Is it going to make us win some silverware? No. Is it going to make FFP change the loan and transfer regulations? No. So Wenger please shutup and start doing your job properly. You should be more concerned about the majority of Arsenal fans hating your guts right now than over something that you can do nothing about.

hypocrisy?? whats wrong with what wengers says.. u might want to have an opinion on something but does that mean you have to be the hero and follow those opinions??

Its like how a manager might say that the transfer sums today are quite ridiculous and ask for a fair play rule… The same manager might then go out and pay 30 million euros for a striker.. Why? They need to in order to compete

Learn how to do your day job properly first (e.g. you could try addressing that defensive issue your team have had for over half a decade now!) before trying to provide meaning less analysis.

spurs have fed of players we should have had in our team its our own fault. How weak would their squad be withouth these arsenal targets

    fridel
    walker dawso king ekotto
