Wenger demands support and respect for Andrei Arshavin

Posted on February 06, 2012 by admin

Andrei Arshavin has not appeared for Arsenal since he came on as a sub against Man United, which sparked a barrage of booing against Arsene Wenger as the Russian walked on the pitch.

Arsenal fans had been severely critical of the 30 year-old this season anyway after a series of lacklustre and lazy-looking performances for the Gunners and many people have called for him to be sold as soon as possible.

But Wenger believes that the fans have a right to show their “frustration” wit the team, but they should respect Arshavin for being a gifted footballer and a consummate professional.

Wenger said: “I understand everybody’s frustrations because I am quite tolerant, but there is still a difference between frustration and lack of respect.

“I personally have a huge respect for Andrey Arshavin and if you would see him behave every day, you would have one as well.”

“Things can change quickly – villain today, hero tomorrow, it is like that nowadays – but when you are a good football player like he is you can always come back.”

Arshavin recently spoke through his agent saying that he intended to stay and fight for his place despite an approach from the Russian richboys FC Anzhi, but his confidence must be at an all-time low right now. Can he possibly come back and contribute positively to Arsenal’s season?

Very unfair to Arshavin for not being played since then, it was not his choice to come on to replace Chamberlain that day.

Come on Wenger, bring back the confidence in our Russian Maestro! The one that netted 4 against Liverpool!

Wenger needsd to respect Ashravin before anyone else can. Try him in his favoured position behind the striker. He would pose more danger than Ramsay n Rosicky put together cause he can actually score.

This weekend was the perfect time to bring him on when the game had been won. RvP on a hattrick n Park wanting to prove a point. You cannot bring him on only when the team is losing or under pressure its not fair on AA23.

He is still one of our best players.

“There is still a difference between frustration and lack of respect.”

100% correct, and a very good point too. When all this booing situation was discussed on this forum, these were my sentiments exactly. Boo the team if you have frustrations, do not blame an individual for poor form. A lack of respect is absolutely true. I’m a frustrated fan also, and I do not think saying to other fans you should not boo. Fans should have a voice, and voice concerns if they are founded. However I don’t believe booing an individual in a team sport is acceptable.

A point that was also made on here by people is that Arshavin should be played in a central role. I agree with this also, with Oxe playing so well on the left, surely now is the chance for Arshavin to play in perhaps his more preferred role.

A front 3 of: Oxe van Persie and Walcott

with Arshavin and Arteta in behind. I think Arshavin can offer similar penetration through the middle that Rosicky offers.

If Wenger plays Arshavin on the left with the recent displays of the Oxe, he will not come close to playing that well. This will only frustrate the fans more, and dent Arshavin’s confidence further.

Arshavin’s talent has not simply disappeared into thin air, he can become great again, if the fans want him to. And if Arshavin wants to. By not leaving Arsenal when it seems like he so easily could of, suggests he wants to prove himself.

Respect is earned and Arshivan performances have been disgracefully…. forget about him being off form he lack of work ethic when he is in the team has always annoy me.

Okay maybe LW is not his position but if you are given a game at least tried. Coquelin is not a RB but he gives it 100% and thats the main reason fans have turned on Arshivan.

I remember him playing v Barcelona…. he was the only one in the team not pressing the ball. Which meant Barca always had an outlet with Jack and the rest of the boys running the bo**ix off for nothing…. cos of one ahole.

Personally if that was my teammate I would kick his ar**!!!

If your on the pitch give it everything and the fans will love you even if you not the most talented player to grace the game.

Arshavin as an AMF can do much better than what Lampard can offer for chelsea. He is such a fantastic footballer. Fans really are behaving in a very cheap way. They have all the rights to show their frustration but not disrespecting such a great footballer and the Captain of Russia.

  14. Overmars says:

Is Hazard a Winger? If so, I dont think he is a priority right now, because we have the likes Gervinho, Vela, OX, Ryo, Campbell, Walcott. If we get him then we need to get rid of one of the above. I think what we need now is a creative midfielder, as Arteta is aging. We also need 2 goal poachers, 2 full backs and 1 more central defender. And most importantly we need a bit of LUCK with injuries and bad refereeing.

  15. Johnno says:

Play Arshavin in his preferred position, not out on a wing. He clearly hates playing on the wing and it doesn’t suit him at all. I’d play Song behind Arteta, Walcott on the right wing, Ox on the left, Van Persie as the target man and Arshavin playing just behind Van Persie. Give the man a go as a forward/attacking mid, he is a class player.

i must be watching different games…he has shown none of the above for 18 months now
and laughing when ballooning yet another shot 30 feet over the bar – or passing to a member of the crowd is more than a little galling
he’s had more than enough chances…and when does a ‘loss of form’ get re-categorised as a total waste of space…

we have players who are younger – hungrier – passionate and equally as skilled and not being paid £4 million a year…so move on a give them their head

This “mess” is not as bad as that fans are thinking.

We are 2 pts back of Newcastle, 3 pts back of Chelsea and 9 pts back of Tottenham.

Next week we play Sunderland away (tough game), but Liverpool play Man utd. away. Newcastle play Tottenham at spurs.

After that we play Spurs at Home, and then Liverpool away. While Tottenham play United.

The next 3 weeks will decide things for all of the teams chasing that 4th finish with possible 3rd becoming a possibility!

NOW IS THE TIME TO GET BEHIND THE SQUAD, IF WE CAN WIN THESE GAMES WE COULD FIND OURSELVES IN 3RD AND IN TOUCHING DISTANCE OF UNITED!

Give him a go in the middle. There hasn’t been a single match that he was handed a change in the shadow striker role at, only vs Bolton. He played relatively well in that game if i remember correctly (of course he did he got an assist and a goal)… But honestly, play him in the center at least until all of this criticism dies down then begin playing him on the left when he’s more confident if he’s needed there

  23. Nick says:

This is a bit of a grey area. We all respect the Arsenal players but we also demand that the players give their all. It would be one thing if Arshavin experienced a “dip in form” for a few weeks but his has gone on since last season. He doesn’t seem like he wanted to be on the pitch long before the whole “booing” happened.

Also, Wenger…. if you love and respect him and everything why isn’t he playing more? The only real way to get a players confidence up is to give them solid game time week in and week out, not subbing them on with 15 minutes left in a game one day and then not playing them at all the next. Also, playing him out of his preferred position.

If you respect AA23 so much, sell him to a club he’s gonna be a starter every game and get at least 60 minutes+ every game. His only goal right now is to play for Russia at Euro 2012. He’s not gonna get there they way he’s playing at Arsenal. Send him away to rediscover his form. Either sell him to Anzi or loan him (if he can be loaned there) for the rest of the season till after Euro then decide if we want to sell him.

I feel just as bad for AA23 as I do for Park. We snatched him out from under Lille and we don’t play him at all. Plus, we pissed off Lille the way we did it ensuring future dealings with them won’t be very pleasant all for a player who just sits there.

I wish there was more access to training ground info so we could all know who really gives their all every day in training and who acts like it’s a bother to be there.

  27. Nick says:

@njoroge… I think Arshavin gives the ball away more often and more cheaply than Ramsey does.

Respect is given from the onset whether they are in an Arsenal jersey or not. We all respected AA23 before he came to Arsenal from his performances for Russia and Zenit. There was not lack of respect from Arsenal fans towards Andrei until he continued his long spell of tired and uninspired performances for the club that pays his salary! He moped around for a year and a half after Russia didn’t qualify for WC2010 and then actually admitted that Russia qualifying for Euro made him want to work harder. That’s where the fans lost respect for him. Respect is given but you have to strive to keep it.

So Mr Wenger Demands Respect for Arshavin. We the Fan’s Demand Respect from You Mr Wenger. You have let us down for the last six seasons soon to be a 7th. You had your chance to get Arsenal back on track by buying a few Quality Players but you put 2 fingers up to the Fan’s and done what you wanted nothing. 3 points out of 12 and he is all high and mighty. What if we lose at Sunderland what excuse will he come up with. Respect is a two way street Mr Wenger.

Arshavin played 52 games last season, scored 10goals and made 17 assists. For a player who probably had the worst season of his life, playing out of position we have to admit that isnt bad,its actualy quite impressive. This season he has been worse, nobody is denying that but this is also due to the fact that we have lost Nasri and Fabregas people who could create for him in the final 3rd. He turned down alot of money to stay with us, that shows heart. Even though i highly doubt Arsene will pay him centrally(he doesnt have work rate for CM and we dont play 442) we shouldn’t boo him. Nothing positive gonna come from that ever.

John says: Your wrong about Arshivin He is not that type of players he does what he does When he is on the ball and his movement Off the ball is to create attack if other players do not see him and do not get him the ball he is caught out of position to defend it is not His job to defend those blaming him for the ManU goal should be looking at the left back who was supposed to have been there Arshivn did attempt to track back but he is not a defender He also belongs in a a 442 behind the lead striker (But personally I would play RVP in that role with another goal scorer in front) When Cesc left Arshavin should have been slotted directly into that position not Ramsey or Wilshire. Arshavin has the quality to actually play good passes and you have 2 central midfielders behind him Song and Arteta or Wilshire or Frampong So he does not have to worry too much about defending in the 4 5 1 formation (we do not really play a 433)
I simply feel Arshavin’s problems stem from the formation Wenger keeps trying to make work even after we lost the player he created the system around Fabergas is gone it is time to change the team’s style based on the players we have instead of make the players we have play based on the team Wenger wished he had. We sit in 7th place not because of Arshavin but because of Wenger

Inasmuch as i do not hate Ashvin,i also have no blame for the fans expressing their frustration over the poor perfomance of the team this season.Arshavin himself has on several occassions complained of lack of confidence and the fans has also been quite patient with his woeful perfomances, it is therefore time for him to put his act together to win back our confidence.Others like Ramsey,Djouru, calamity Squilaci and lazy Chamak should learn from Ashsvin’s ordeal and raise their game before heavy dose of such embarrasment will visit them.
