Wenger has promised a defender and a midfielder – and now a striker!

Posted on August 26, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger has been speaking out about the transfer window again and has admitted he is looking for someone in a striking position, just hours after it was confirmed that he had put a bid in for a defender!

He promised the Arsenal fans that he would be bringing in a big experienced defender at the beginnining of the transfer window, but later detracted and said that Thomas Vermaelen was like a new signing. Now it seems he is trying to panic-buy Cahill after Koscielny (and maybe Vermaelen too) succumbed to injury.

Just last week, after announcing the sales of Fabregas and Nasri, he admitted that he was short of numbers in midfield, and he really needed to bring one in soon.

Now, today, with just five days of the transfer window remaining, he has said that a striker is now a priority as Nicklas Bendtner will be on his way soon.

Wenger said: “We are looking for one more striker because we know Bendtner will leave. We will be short because we also have Marouane Chamakh leaving for the African Cup of Nations this season.”

So does that mean the fans can expect one of each in the next five days?????

I saw this on the Arsenal website as well, I do agree that we need another striker, Bendtner is useless, RVP is guaranteed to get an injury at some point and Chamakh will be at the ACON so we wont really have anyone, Vela is out on loan so we will be left with Joel Campbell and thats it lol
I am hoping we will sign Cahill although the bid we put it was pretty pathetic and knowing Wenger he could refuse to pay near 17m especially as he is out of contract next season
we definitely need a CM though, thats been massively highlighted in the start to this season

It looks like he will definitely pick up a CB, MF and CF in the next few days.. I still believe Parker would be key because his experience will make better players out of Wilshere, Frimpong and Ramsey; can’t depend on Rosicky to teach these kids although he has had a magnificent second half at Udinese. If not Parker then I think we need to make a bid for Modric being we are in the Champions League and Modric obviously wants to compete in it; seems Chelsea won’t go for him since they picked up our MF of interest: Mata and an ex Gunner seems to be on his way to Spurs, Adebayor! Let’s get Cahill in CB and Tevez or Benzema for CF and get this win against Man Utd on Sunday, COME ON YOU GOONERS!!

  4. Goonawarra says:

A defender, midfielder and striker with proven quality would be very nice indeed but let’s not get ahead of ourselves because we know that Wenger will never pay what he considers to be over the odds for a player. We may have shot ourselves in the foot by leaving it so late as our desperation must be plain for all to see. Everybody knows that we are cashed up now and won’t hesitate to chuck an extra few mil onto sale prices and Wenger never plays this game. He will just start looking elsewhere but time is running out!! Come on mate, at least give us Cahill. That would be a start.

Unfortunately, on past experiences, i will believe this when i see it.

If we conduct all our transfer negotiations the way the Cahill transfer seems to be going with a derisory bid, i dont see us having much joy.

Just because we get pushed around by other teams in the transfer window (Barcelona, Man-City), it doesnt mean we can do the same with smaller teams, Gadzidis does not appear to have the intelligence to do it!!

I hope im wrong, and we see 3 big-name signings…. somehow though, i feel i will be disappointed!!

It sounds like Bolton came knocking on Arsenal’s door and asked if they want to buy Cahill. That’s how Wenger puts it! and they responded “hmmmm… sure how about 10 Mil.?” and they walked away feeling insulted. It seems Bolton are getting anxious as they want to buy players and are banking on the sale of Cahill but they haven’t had any offers yet so they going door-to-door.

No disrespect to Cahill or Bolton but Bolton are just in a weak negotiating position – nothing more – especially as there are several top CB on the market right now. If he was a creative midfielder then he would be Hot Property!

Just because we(Arsenal FC)get it doesn’t mean HE has access to it! Why are we not demanding the BOARD make the funds available? Does HE not want the same glory we do? I don’t believe the money is there for Arsene- the board are too interested in clearing their debts FIRST! Try pointing the finger to the right target!

Adojo – Here, Here! I have been saying this for the last few days. Surely it is ludicrous to think that any manager (remember what his role is – to win games … which requires quality players) would not want to go out and buy his dream team!!! We as fans all do it, so don’t you think the guy making it happen – with a bunch of players to manage – wants the same??? Of course he does!!! I strongly believe that it is more likely that the people who control the £££ are limiting AW options. (Or AW knows he has to choose wisely, as he will only have a limited budget to achieve his goals). That’s the balance for Him – the expectations of everyone (fans/Club/himself) to win stuff vs what he has access to in terms of £££. And therein lies the difficulty for the man. Need players, got cahs – but limits to what I can do, no time …. along with “make miracles happen” (from the board, and the fans). I say, more power to you AW. I hope you find the players you need, I hope you don’t run out of time … and if you don’t make it … I hope people give you a little latitude and grace.
    Go Arsene, Go Gunners!

As a perssimist,i don’t see any new signings arriving the emirates stadium before the 30th of august.Gary Cahill’s situation is understandable, wenger cannot cash-in a huge sum knowing his contract ends at the end of this season but i feel he should at least increase the bid to 10m,i’m sure bolton will sell(same reason why arsenal let Nasri go;To avoid total loss) because 6m is unreasnable.there’s still time anyways. There are other defensive & midfeild deals speculated and yet, nothing has been concluded or even in negotiation stage.so i don’t see any signings concluded within 5days. If We are lucky we would get just one Player On or before the deadline day.Another problem is when january transfer opens next year, most of the injured players right now would be fit and wenger will get carried away as usual stating he has alot of players and don’t need anymore, and that is the very stage(2nd half of season) when we need good back-ups because fatigue always comes in,thereby making causing us to lose alot of important games that would have given us a chance to lift a trophy.
As an Optimist on the other hand, I hope wenger keeps to his words this time and make the vital signings we need to cover up the department we lack quality players before DEADLINE DAY.”IN WENGER I TRUST”

  21. SG_Gunner says:

Reading all the above comments and the article here makes me wonder if we Arsenal fans are so desperate for success that we believe every little trash printed as gospel.

    1. Cahill is not worth $17mil. Clichy with much better experience and younger went for $7mil. He was on his last year like Cahill. He had much more European and international experience and was sold for fair price. Fact is Bolton want to cash in on Cahill and are using tabloid trash to put pressure on Arsenal. Our current CBs are great. We need good backup for them which is our weakness. Wenger has already blasted the story.

    2. Paying big amounts for players is just one part of the equation. Board is totally out of touch with reality when it comes to wages. Great players now refuse to come to Arsenal because we cant pay as much as top 3 clubs. Hence we are mostly 4th in the league. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Arsene has failed to get player wages increased resulting in him missing out on good players. Mata being the latest. Before you believe the horse shit in the papers saying that Arsene refuses to pay over the odds, remember that it was Arsene who got better wages for Arsenal players when he first joined Arsenal (fact mentioned by our former greats).

    3. Has anybody considered why Man city took so long to finalise Nasri’s transfer. Before blaming Wenger we fans should be questioning Mancs intentions. Their manager was busy making public proclamations of admiration, Viera was unofficially tapping Nasri but they never confirmed the deal till the last minute. This despite Arsenal having agreed to the sale for quite a while. Why? Because we are big competitors and they know we were in weaker position regarding the contract. Instability for us means less competition for them. How come suddenly everything fell in place once Wenger selected Nasri for the Liverpool game and threatened to use him for the CL game. Unfortunately, the damage to us had been done by that time because now it is doubly hard for us to look for replacement. The fact is that Man city are run like a ruthless big business. We just got to get used to that fact.

    4. Lastly, I am no die hard AKB fan. In fact, I feel there is much Wenger can improve on but vilifying him on lack of transfer Activity or conducting of transfer business is just barking up the wrong tree. Blaming him for the wages some of our squad are paid feels just like a backlash where someone needs to be blamed and Wenger ends up an easy target.

GOD KNOW WHAT arsene was thinking when he sold clichy! yeah gibbs is good, but hes too young to be tackling all those RW’s and attackers, we need a decent experienced LB and CB, all we have is sagna and vermellen!

Why don’t you all wake up and smell the coffee. Bolton want £17million for Cahill, Wenger offers £6million. Arsenal are not serious about buying anyone, unless they come really cheap. Remember Squillachi, we got him cheap and what a pile of manure he turned out to be. Arsene worries about resell value, what will he get for Squillachi…nothing, because no one will buy him. I am sick of our buying policy, we offer a fraction of what players are worth, then are surprised when the clubs tell us to take a “Running Jump”. I am sick of Arsenal taking the urine. If we want experience and a player who can hit the ground running, then we have to pay. We are going into this season with a team that lacks experience at the back, in midfield and with no one to replace RVP WHEN he is injured, as he will surely be. If no one comes in then we can forget Champions League next season and if were lucky we might get into the “Down Market” Europa League.

Smart money is on no more transfers being made, if past experience tells us anything. Arsene will (already did) claim that Vermaelen was “like a new signing” and bringing in another CB will slow Miquel’s development. He will also say we did bring in transfers with Gervinho, Alex O-C, and Joel Campbell and that Ryo is ready to contribute so we will have too many players.

Maybe we will end up with no signings this transfer window (a real shame and possibly quite painful for the fans and team). But we won;t disappear into oblivion, and we will still have cash for the next transfer window. So things aren’t totally screwed for us yet. Seems everyone is only thinking short term (as if the world will end when this window closes). Wenger has clearly stated – you have to be strong now, and build for the future. I’m sure he understands all the dynamics way better than you or I.

If he is that good and don’t get me wrong he’s decent , how come no one has snaped him up . United payed 16 million for jones why didn’t arsenal had bid12 . Why didn’t united buy cahill for 13 mill which is probably what he’ll go for . Gary cahill is not as hot property as Bolton think. The way Bolton have conducted themselves has been a bit shamefull . That’s how negotiations start.
It’s looking like it’s going to be a nervy last day in the transfer window when all our summer signings will be done .

Kaka is not available to u on loan,so y not just buy him and then u have ur midfielder/winger and add a few extra pounds on ur bid to sign Cahill after all if u do consider him a possible Arsenal player then i’m sure Arsenal is worth more than the few pounds u initially offered.
