Wenger – I will respect my contract at Arsenal for the next two years
Arsene Wenger was quoted by L’Equipe as saying that he could possibly leave Arsenal at the end of this season, but as he explained after today’s 2-1 win at Norwich, it was in answer to a leading question.
But let Wenger explain it himself: “No I wouldn’t think about quitting. If you read the interview in L’Equipe you will see I said that I have two years on my contract. It was after a conversation with a journalist and he said, ‘there is no way that you will ever leave is there?’. I said the only way I would consider it at the end of the season is if I didn’t deliver what is expected from me. Then of course if you say you love the Club and you are below what people are expecting from you, that is the only way I will consider it.
“For the rest of the time I am personally completely committed to the Club and will respect my contract until the end. At the start of the season when I made this interview there were of course many people questioning what I do. I was determined. The interview was two or three weeks ago. But I maintain that I am committed to this Club and will respect my contract until the last day – unless I feel that I am not good enough.”
“I have to honestly rate the quality of my work at the end of the season and think whether or not I took the maximum out of the team. You want me to say now that if we do not get into the top four I will quit. Over 15 years I have had many questions to analyse the situation in the most honest and objective way.
“I don’t question my commitment to my contract and I think I have shown that in the past. I will do that in the future too. This is the club of my life and will remain so unless I feel I do not do well enough. I don’t think that is something surprising.
“I can return this question to you – what do you expect of me? We want to play football that makes Arsenal proud and that gives enjoyment to people who come and watch us.”
No one can question that Wenger has done a remarkable job in turning around a terrible start to the season, and they will certainly end up in the Top Four for the 15th year in a row. Many people, including me, questioned whether Wenger had lost control of the dressing room, but right now you would have to assume that he is still the best man for Arsenal, and he will probably stay in charge for another five years….

I read the slant given to this story in goal.com and it was petrifying as their take on the story is that AW will leave at the end of the season. With the improvement on the early season form, the press are looking for some other negative things to write on the club. Big shame. I just hope that the team remains focused on continuing the good job they are doing. Gunners forever!

@Gunner, I agree entirely. Football, notwithstanding the high monetary stakes still remains entertainment and it is only good football a la Arsenal and Barca that provides the much needed entertainment. While silverware is important, entertaining football should not be sacrificed on the altar of silverware. Thanks AW for giving us entertainment with your team.

Personally, I can see good things coming from this team. We have players who are Arsenal through and through. Walcott is developing into a style like the great Henry, RVP is in the style of Bergkamp, we have Vermaelen who kind of reminds me of Adams, Shezzer is amazing, up there with Seaman, the list goes on. We have a squad like our previous winning squads developing, the main benefit we have this time around is they will have had a good few years playing together and learning each others style and hopefully get to where the team of the invincible era was but with more years ahead of them. Keep the chin up gooners, a bright future awaits.

AW is my hero. One of the most honest, honorable, dedicated and loyal person I ever seen. leave aside the fact that he is a genius. Call me emotional but I can’t and won’t imagine my arsenal without him. I Wish he’d be our manager till he’ll be too old.

how the worm turns – and in such a short time as well…
just scroll back 6 short weeks
and the closet ‘Wenger haters’ in here were all knives drawn – littering their mindless comments with 4 letter expletives and a stream of bile and derision…
they say that a week in politics – is a long time
well a month in football must be an absolute age
shame on those of you who slagged him

Am I reading these posts correctly? People are saying they are content with Arsenal playing pretty football but not winning?? Sorry but you are a bunch of morons. What is the point in competing in all these high profile leagues and cups when our only ambition is ‘to play pretty football?’ What is the point in playing football at all? What you are saying is that even if we get relegated you will be ok with it as long as we play pretty football? Can’t even believe you lot call yourselves Arsenal supporters. Look at a team like Barcelona, they play beautiful football and they win. Why can’t we strive for the same? Let’s hope the manager has more ambition than you lot, because if AFC had the mindset just to play pretty football to please the crowd, we would see relegation faster than you know it. Then we wouldn’t be able to compete in anything decent at all.
Victory should be the aim of any professional sport team. Arsenal have such a legendary status not because the played ‘pretty’ football in the past, but because THEY WON. We have such an awesome club to support today because of players and managers striving for victory. So please those fans who are happy with Arsenal playing pretty football, but not minding if we never see another cup for 20 years, rather go and support another team, because the Arsenal I have been supporting my whole life are here to compete with the greats and bring more glory home that just playing pretty football.
