Wenger – I won’t buy Cahill, Bolton were too greedy
Arsenal seemed certain to buy Bolton’s Gary Cahill in the summer, but when Wenger finally made a move for him the Reebok Chairman Phil Gartside publicly castigated the Gunners for putting in a ‘derisory’ offer.
Wenger hates any of his transfer dealings made public, especially in such a disrespectful way, and immediately broke off talks with Bolton for the England defender, and instead brought in the big German international Per Mertesacker.
Now Wenger has got his own back by declaring that he will not be making any new offers for Cahill in January, and that Bolton were too greedy in the summer for a player in the last year of his contract.
“Cahill is good enough to play Champions League, but he is not someone I would be interested in,” said Wenger.
“I have got five central defenders – [Laurent] Koscielny, [Sebastien] Squillaci, Mertesacker, [Thomas] Vermaelen and [Johan] Djourou. Of this five, four are international players.
“We were in the market in the summer, but at that time they [Bolton] were greedy.”
Chelsea are hot favourites to sign Cahill now, with Alex and John Terry not getting any younger, but it is much more likely that both sides will now wait until the summer as Cahill could command much higher wages with no transfer fee involved.
Wenger also indicated that it was very unlikely that he will need to buy anyone in January, as he is more than happy with the players he has right now. “In football you rule very few things out, because it depends if you have seven injuries until January.” he said.
“However, at the moment we have a big enough squad to cope.”

I would have liked Cahill to come in the summer, but we will cope if verm, kos and mert stay fit.
In jan we should sign a midfielder to give us more rotation options, and a) and LB if possible. A striker to back up RVP wldnt hurt as he could get the occasional rest.

We have started again! We have always had a “big enough squad”, and suddenly injury overtakes them all and we start moaning why we did not buy this and that player. Please the squad still needs strengthening. Am sure even RVP is waiting to see how much additional strength we would add to this squad to challenge for honours, or else…

Excellent. We no longer need Cahill, and for the record, ALL of our centre-backs are internationals.
If Chamakh and Park both fail to perform in coming months, then we need a new striker. If the full-backs continue to be injured, then signing Arbeloa (on loan) wouldn’t hurt either.

I agree with u both Seun and Albert, my fellow gunners injuries have always ruin our season,how do i know that,it happens evry time aftr xmas,when utd and blues becme stronger and stronger,we bcome weaker and weaker,can anyone tell me when Vermalen and Koncienly are injured who The giant Merter wil play with? Squillaci should be on his way in January, Djourou is not exactly setting the world alight and we have three fullbacks injured and it`s only guess work when they will return. Best we can hope for is match fitness sometime February. If Vertonghen can be made available in January he should take him but other than that what you see is what you get.

AW not exactly modest or honest. Was Nasri not in his last year when we asked Man City for £24mill?
Judging by the other inept defenders (djourou – squillaci et al) and the questionable purchase of Mertesacker, methinks AW would do well to try and learn from his own continued mistakes before castigating other teams.

i feel we dont need Cahill i see Kos showing lots of promise this time maybe he has finally adapted to the english game
i also put lots of faith in Ignasi Miquel to step when we sell squallaci or Djourou(unless he proves himself) or when Mertesacker gets older a couple of loans spells for Miquel will do

I pray we finish in a reputable position at the end of the season. We only have one leftback(Gibbs never last three matches in a row),ramsey cant play more than 35 matches in a season or end up like wilshere. Who is our substitue if walcott is injure?We only have one decent striker, and with our history of getting zillions of injuries in the second half of the season I wonder when this man will learn. Only God will help.

Bolton were greedy? Then what are you? Too stingy? Wenger will talk up Squillaci, Chamakh and Aluminium and then say what a big squad he has got! At the end of the day, quality is needed alongside depth. Wenger, your ain’t finishing in top 4 if you don’t sign a quality striker in Jan. It’s as simple as that.

i made the comment some weeks ago that wenger would not buy in january. It amazes me that blogs are full of our potential new players…..weve been linked with about 50 or so!!!!.
The cahill saga is interesting in that wenger is as bad as the bolton chairman. In one corner you have what appears to be a greedy and rude man that throws his dummy out the pram and in the other a manager very well-known for trying to get players on the cheap and making irritating derisory offers. Hardly a match made in heaven!!!
Cahill is a good player but he isnt that good.TV5 is way ahead of him and kos is not far behind. Mertesacker for me is a weak link….believe me he isnt that solid. So cahill would have been a good buy, but no great loss.

I wonder how so many ppl view things. We have so many players available for 1st team squad yet they don’t get 2 play due to the depth. And u know these players don’t like sitting on bench.
The same ppl ‘ll say play AA23, OC15,P9, RM32 et all and may be u don’t knw we are one of the highest wages team in d league and is not just easy 2 discard players like that especially if there is no potential buyers. See MA01, SS18 and NB52, despite AW wanted 2 sell them, no club came 4 them. and so what do u do with 40 outfield players when they all stay fit.
So c’mon support d man & let;s hope evrything works well in our favour. AKB

Verthongen – that would solve our problems; with him, Vermaelen and Koscielny, we would have proven back ups for both full backs as well as DM. Our weakest point now, in the starting XI is our LB.
Szczesny, currently rated #2 in EPL
Sagna, best RB in EPL, possibly in the world
Vermaelen/Koscielny, a top, top CB pair
Santos or Gibbs, I don´t know who is the better but both have defensive problems
Song, the best DM in EPL
Arteta, a very good EPL player
Wilshere, among the very best box-box players in EPL
Walcott, turned the corner and is more consistent , top winger
Gervinho has proved himself to be of top EPL quality
RvP – the best striker in the EPL, among the very best in the world
Of course, we do have Ramsey who seems to be back to the level he had before his injury, Arshavin, still one of the most talented players – just too inconsistent, Mertesacker, a proven international,…
We do need Park and/or Chamakh to come true. Currently, we are relying too much on RvP´s goals.
Anybody heard how Vela is doing? Will he be coming back?

Wenger is becoming euphoric with the present stretch of victories in Arsenal.While he should not forget where we were few months ago,it is also important to remember that injuries has been the bane of success in Arsenal.Even Man City as strong as they are,yet thinking of strengthening the squad.Why is Arsene being carried away to the extent of forgeting how prone several of our players are? We need another prolific striker and a good attacking midfielder. UP GUNNERS.

wenger if u like buy or dont buy i dont even know if this club belong to your father or that you are one of the share holders of this club? Before transfer window opens you wil price more than 500 players but at the end you end up loosing your best player and bring in another silvester or cambel. I give credit to all arsenal fans around the globe because is not easy to endure for six years now with out a tropy.

i think vertonghen would be ideal because gibbs is injury prone and we need for good centre backs, right now we have 3. His versatility and leadership are awesome
