Wenger – Man City can’t abide by Financial Fair Play Rules

Posted on November 23, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger may have overseen the growth of Arsenal by preparig to be self-sufficient ahead of the introduction of UEFA’s Fair Play Rules, supposedly next year, but now he thinks that the new policy will be unworkable with all the new investment going into some teams through rich benefactors.

Wenger knows full well that Man City have absolutely no chance of abiding by the rules by next year, and also includes Malaga and Paris St Germain in the clubs that are certainly overspending compared to their actual income.

The Gunners’ boss was asked what he thought the news about Man City’s incredible £194.9m loss in their latest figgures and he said: “When I see the number announced by Man City, do you really think it [FFP] will work in 2013? I cannot see it when the wage bill is bigger than the turnover. Frankly, that cannot happen in one year.”

“And secondly, with what happened with Sion challenging Uefa, they have lost a lot of power. We live in a world where any decision made is challenged. The authority of the legal affairs is challengeable everywhere.

“Will Uefa be capable to force it through? I question it. In other countries, you have as well Paris St-Germain, Malaga as well. Once they represent a force together, it will be difficult to fight against.”

Although the FFP rules seems to be fairer, it would also prevent smaller teams (like Malaga and PSG) from becoming capable of challenging the established big clubs. If Malaga can do a “Man City” and finally break the stranglehold that Barcelona and Real Madrid have on La Liga, then surely that is a good thing for the game?

It’s fine let these sugadaddy clubs keep spending. In my opinion, when these clubs are bought out by billionares and spend horrendous amounts of cash on buying in the best players, what do us as fans get end of the day? Bloody good football, that’s what. Who want’s to see the same two teams dominate year after year without hope for anyone else? Since the rising of teams like Chelsea, Spurs, City, Liverpool etc we have seen some excellent and very competitive, high profile football. It has really livened things up. All of a sudden Man United have some competition besides us, ofcourse.

From an Arsenal fans perspective, we shouldn’t worry a bit. Let me explain why. Those clubs who are overspending, will eventually fold sooner or later. A few years from now teams like Chelsea, City etc will have imploded financially. They just cannot keep spending like they are.

So end of the day, if Arsenal play their books just right, we should be able to outclass all these big spending teams and win silverware, and STILL maintain economical longevity. We will be a top club for a long time to come. All that needs to happen now, if we want to become THE top club and start winning again, is if we actually do spend a bit on one or two world class killer players that could actually make the world of difference.

At the moment our squad is good. Still some defensive issues but for what we have forked out financially we are sitting quite comfortably in the top tier of the league, alongside the likes of Liverpool, Spurs and company who have spent a hell of a lot more than us.

So please board, if you really want to impress the fans and in turn make MORE money, spend a bit on two more world class players. That way we can win silverware which in turn will generate more fans and more profits. Also and probably more importantly, our current best players will end up renewing contracts.

It may seem unfair to some that teams dominate their leagues but that has been the way of football for decades now. Football is built on the giant and the minnow. To eliminate that would be to inherit the US system of having a draft and nobody would suggest that. Some may say that upsetting the order with financial sugar-daddies is a welcome change. Difficult not be biased against that as an Arsenal fan but for me a team whos’ position is based on reputation and previous success gained on merit, history if you will, is far more glamorous than a team whos’ position is based on money alone. As for whether the FFP regulations will work i think their failure would be a hammer-blow to FIFA because it would represent their loss of control over the sport that they were set up to govern. FIFA must make the regulations work, they must maintain more power than individual clubs and I think they will.

It almost seems as though wenger is trying to use reverse psycology to try and coax uefa into keeping their word and stamping down their autgority when it comes into play! After all, arsenal will be the main benefactors if and when the ffp rules are introduced.

i really cant see how uefa could stand be there ffp rules. kudos for trying to bring them in though but uefa have always caved in to there own rules.
liverpool broke them twice within 6 months. they won champions league but still finished 5th and should not of got entry and you were not allowed to play for 3 clubs in 1 year but thats what mascherano did when he left west ham. just saying
