Wenger – Man Utd's fouls are worse than Eduardo's diving!
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has launched a stinging attack on Man Utd, saying that their persistent fouling went unpunished by the referee, and is a lot worse for football than the accusations of diving against Eduardo.
He slammed Darren Fletcher after the match, although he refused to name him as the target of his tirade.
“I have seen today players who play only to make fouls but who were never punished,” he said. “Players who make repeated fouls are never punished and get out of the game without a yellow card.
“I think that is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did. Look at how many deliberate fouls some players make and get away with it.
“I think it’s a bigger problem because it cuts the flow of the game. And people come and pay to see football, not free-kicks.
“You should certainly ask the officials to watch the video again and they will see the conclusions.”
When he was asked if he was talking about Fletcher he replied: “Why do you say the name?” and smiled.
Then he was asked about the campaign against diving that has arisen after the furore of Eduardo’s simulation against Celtic, and he said that he supported the move, but he doesn’t think that Eduardo necessarily dived.
“It is difficult with diving,” he said. “Sometimes players dive to escape being hit. The line between being sensible, being shrewd or being a cheat is sometimes very slim.
“There is no common sense in the Eduardo situation. With UEFA it has been an emotional reaction. But I like the stance the English take towards diving. In some countries it is a quality to dive. I’m still more proud to be part of England where they fight against that.”
