Wenger may be excited about Jenkinson, but the fans aren’t!

Posted on June 10, 2011 by admin

Arsenal fans are used to being disappointed transfer windows, as we always here about how massive amounts of money are building up in the “transfer fund” but find out that Wenger has bought a few 17 year-olds for the academy, but this year was supposed to be different…

Wenger has (yet again) acknowledged that the defence is a big problem, and he admitted that he needs to buy strong, tall experienced and mature players to counterbalance the youth in the side, but what have we been treated to so far?

Today it’s been announced that Wenger has finally secured the Southampton youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (that will look good on the new shirt!) for £12m, BUT the only definite signing is the 19 year-old out-of-contract Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson, who will cost a couple of million in compensation.

As you can guess, the Arsenal Blogs were a bit underwhelmed by the news, especially as this was common knowledge a couple of months ago (I reported it on April 6th), but Wenger is suddenly very “excited” by the deal!

He said: “We were watching Carl for some time and he is a player with great talent and natural defensive ability, but also a powerful player who likes to go forward,”

“He is a strong defender who has made quick progress with Charlton and also with the younger age categories for the Finland national team, showing many great qualities.

“We are excited that Carl is joining us and he will add strength to our squad.”

Jenkinson may add “strength to the squad” but what happened to “experience and maturity”?

I am willing to give the lad a chance, but if Wenger only buys youngsters in this transfer window then he clearly has learned nothing from our recent failings. Hopefully all these signings for the future are just the calm before the storm, as far as play acquisitions go.

Carl Jenkinson is just another youth non-story. It will make no difference where this player is this season, next season or five seasons from now.

Phil Jones on the other hand…

    why are you complaining?
with virtually everyone brandishing eboue as a liability, having Jenkinson can only be good and he is seen as the heir apparent to Sagna. We all know he is not the major signings that Wenger was talking about but continuous improvement in the youth is required (especially with a lack of a right back in the reserves)

Wenger is killing us….he is too much of a financial manager, rather than a football manager. I mean spend some money , winning trophies also brings in cash…manure got +\- 50M for reaching the CL final…and 80+ M merchandising y??? B/c they WIN!!!…wat happened to adebayor and toure money?? Winning is what got us the Emirates …one more season AW or ill also hav to fly to london and join the protests….spend that 20 or 30M…AFC can afford it!!!!!

  13. Mark says:

Seriously who cares what the fans think.
Only in England would fans be upset at signing a one million pound 19 year old back up right back. And wish for 20 million plus signings for people who have only played a season of top flight football, the transfer window is only 10 days old for fucks sake and “fans” are already throwing their dummies around.
This isn’t football manager whereby you spend 20 mil on a defender one day and 24 mil on a striker the next.
The only reason why Arsenals young players are highlighted is because there is a chance they can succeed, Chelsea and United sign over ten of youngsters a year yet no one cares because they will be flogged two years later for nothing.

Arsenalhad squillaci, Djourou, and Laurent in defense and they lost terribly. Wenger is too stubborn and he will suffer again for it. What does the 19year old stand in defense against people like Drogba, Messi, Rooney. With Chambalain and Jenkinson in the first team Arsenal is heading for anotherfailed season and hopefully the 7th consercutive season without a trophy to show for their interesting but pathetic style of football.

Wenger can do one of two things, surprise us with quality signings or shock us by resigning in January, which is it to be? I`ll go for the former.

  18. PriceyGooner says:

Who has been our stand out player this season? Wilshere surely has to be at the front of that list. Everyone is saying we need more like him, with both an English and Arsenal connection, creating a passion for our great club. Jenkinson and Oxlade-Chamberlain (if indeed we have signed him) surely both fit this bill. Both want to play for Arsenal and I can see both carving out successful careers.

The fact of the matter is yes we need some established, proven quality but if we do get that its unlikely they will be gooners through and through, at least not to begin with.

For this reason I see these two as definitively something to get excited about. We need players that support Arsenal and that will grow into our future Arsenal stronghold positions.

I look forward to seeing who (and if) we bring in for immediate impact but surely any Arsenal fan should be pleased to see real prospects coming in. When I say this I don’t just mean young talent I mean people who can reignite that desire to be Arsenal for life.

agree with everything you just wrote ryan…Arsenal fans have been spoiled…could be worse, at least we’re not Everton who never win anything ever or Man $hitty, who have to buy trophies…they are rumored to be after EVERY striker in Europe! they have Tevez, Dzeko, Ade, Santa Cruz just to name a few! they have so many they have to loan them out! financial fair play is going to kill some of these clubs! Arsenal fans need to remain SUPPORTIVE! Wenger will make moves this summer, be patient, transfer window isn’t even officially open until July 1! sit back, relax, have a pint and smile mates!

  25. Mike the Gooner says:

come on guys i know it frustrating but transfer window doesn’t officially open till July 1st and Arsenal do generally keep very hush hush about transfer deals till it finalised so hold your judgement till window does open then you can truely see if Wenger has kept his promise

PS. when Wenger said bout big signings he didn’t say he wouldn’t bring a couple of talented youngsters as well so don’t think this is his so called big signings

    Take a chill pill !!
We are only 10 days into the transfer window.
We have bid for Jones and lost out on that signing. its only 10 days, we have been waiting 6 years for a trophy. surely we can wait a few more weeks for some signings.

This is the same Arsenal that take forever to sign players, constantly haggling and trying to get the cheapest deal possible. Arsenal very rarely do quick transfer deals so all this moaning is a waste of time.

The truth is great we buy youth over experience but when we do this they try to leave like flamini or pleb when the become big headed over there talent as nasri is doing now the players must feel the same as us buy some experience not more youth if we lose nasri and fab and clichy we won’t be winning anything again then next year it will be Walcott let spend now win something and sell them after.
Soon players won’t want to come to arsenal because we don’t win a thing. EVERYONE DON’T BUY ANY SHIRTS or MERCHANDISE UNTIL WE BUY SOME QUALITY TO THE SQUAD.
    That’s what I’m doing.

if we don’t pay the salaries nasri is requesting we would not sign top players.

We might not pay that salary to nasri, but we would need to start paying bigger salaries if we want to sign bigger players.

by the way, refusing to pay nasri’s requested salry is stupid because we would end up losing 10-15 million in his transfer fee instead of spending 3-5 in raising his salary, and porbably eran more by selling him later (if is worth to sell him)

ryan shut up. 1st of all I am very pro getting Carl. you cannot argue that fact that he lacks maturity and saying that sakho and the hazard do as well because they are also young. Each has been playing for their team for atleast 3 years now and has been a big part of their respective teams/league. Age does not always definde maturity and experience(I.E cesc + verm). Sakho has been capt for like 3 years now and I’m sure hazard could be given to tempt him to stay

Well the window has just opened so stop your sensationalist c**p and articles simply designed to breed hatred for Arsene Wenger and write some real articles. This site is always just hate, hate, hate with articles so one-sided against the manager and with no intelligence to them. Here is what the lad said to Arsenal.com and you’re slagging him off before he’s even pulled on the shirt …

“My dad has been a season ticket holder for 40-odd years and has been going regularly since he was a kid.

“He brought me up as an Arsenal fan and I’ve been going since I was young. I even went to a few games last season. My whole family are all massive Arsenal fans.

“I was always a big fan of Tony Adams and I’m reading his book at the moment. He was always someone I looked at as a great leader. He is a player I can learn a lot from and I will be looking to follow in his footsteps.”

… I think a lad like this is going to be playing out of his socks to help the team he supports, to do his dad proud and please the rest of his Arsenal Supporting family. We should go for that other Arsenal Supporter now, Ashley Young. Sell Nasri to pay for the deal. I want players who want to be at the club and if they support the club too, it doesn’t get any better … unless you’re a mobile phone advertising Judas called Ashley Cole.
