Wenger slams Atletico Madrid for "destabilising" Fran Merida

Posted on November 05, 2009 by admin

Tell us the truth Fran!

Tell us the truth Fran!

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has slammed Atletico Madrid for trying to poach Fran Merida, and says that Arsenal have already agreed a new contract with the Spain U20 star, but Merida just hasn’t signed it yet.

It has already been confirmed that Arsenal have offered Merida a new five-year contract, but according to Merida’s agent he is going to talk to Arsenal about a new contract, but only for two years.

Wenger said today: “He has an offer which he has agreed, but has not signed yet,” said Wenger.

“Some clubs are doing their work behind our back to destabilise him. We cannot stop that, but it is a fact.”

Wenger should know better than anyone, after the debacle with Mathieu Flamini, that a contract not signed means absolutely nothing, no matter what the player or his agent says.

In fact the agent made it quite clear yesterday that Merida was going to go to Madrid, but then said this morning that he was going to talk to Wenger about a two-year contract. WE can only sit and wonder what he will say tomorrow!

But the fact is: There is no contract signed, so it is not worth the paper it isn’t written on. It seems to me that Merida is going to do a Flamini and hold Arsenal to ransom, and make them beat whatever Atletico have put on the table, or he is simply stalling until January when he is officially allowed to talk to other clubs.

He can’t afford to come out and declare that he has decided to leave (because he is not yet allowed to talk to other clubs), but also Wenger would drop him like a stone from the Carling Cup team, and he could lose out on some valuable playing time.

Can anyone find a way through this delicate tissue of lies?

Dump him now, he’s too far down the pecking order anyway, he’s below Wilshire and Ramsey, thats why he wants to go, he knows he’s better than Wilshire, more mature and has fit into the Arsenal style better than Wilshire but WIlshire still gets played ahead of him. It must be hard for someone who has given a team so much time and have undeniable talent see two younger guys brought in and moved above him,he deserves better than that. He’s definitely a more complete player than both of those players but he has to settle for less because Ramsey and Wilshire are special telants that Wenger seems to want to nurture ahead of him.

  2. pink panther says:

we must get him to sign a contract and then play him in a few games – then he can always leave for a decent fee and everyone will be happy. but merida is being very short-sighted. having been patient this long why walk out on a side that are already among europe’s elite and getting better. he will get more games inevitably, due to rotation and injuries. he will get picked ahead of wilshere because of the age difference. in a couple of years time who knows, he may be a first choice starter for the two times european champions! that is not going to happen anywhere else!!!

  3. Arsenal1Again says:

When I first heard about A.Madrid’s interest in Merida my first thoughts were that the player must have contract talks pending. Everyone knows how players get their agents to insinuate how other clubs are in for the player’s signature …. everytime a contract is about to be negotiated you see this. As with all such players, Merida is just hoping the club will improve on the offer they’re proposing.

With Cesc at our club, I have no fears about Fran Merida signing with another club soon. Only recently I saw a video where Cesc was grinning after Fran Merida skipped and hopped down some stairs where he used to live. Our Captain’s words were, “That was me five years ago.” Fran Merida is clearly following in the exact same footsteps of development as Cesc, and expect soon a statement from Fran Merida stating that the rumours are false, how he loves Arsenal, how he owes Arsenal, etc …… like we’ve heard Cesc say a million times.

  4. Cujo says:

Sadly i’v yet to see the guy play.. But if wenger is offering him a 5 year contract then im sure he’s got talent.. Lol but then again, so does everyone else. I think he should definitely stay at arsenal. When the injuries pile up, and they will, wenger will be forced to give them a few starts. wow im just realising how huge our squad is!

  5. John Muhindo says:

Merida sign your new contract with arsenal, you can see the young talented players are shining in arsenal, why don`t you be part of them? Do not panic to Leave arsenal. You will achieve alot.Atletico Madrid is not superb.Ask Helb what happens when you leave arsenal without proper permission.

  6. Samuel says:

If Atletico get relegated which is very likely then Merida will have wasted valuable playing experience ,the same thing happened to Reyes after leaving Arsenal ,and to Hleb ,the choice is his.
