Wenger targets Brazilian striker for Champions League assault
The new left-back Andre Santos might not be Arsenal’s only Brazilian footballer for much longer, as it is being reported that Arsene Wenger is trying to find a new striker he can bring to the team this January. The Mirror states that he has eyed Tottenham’s summer transfer target Leandro Damiao, who is currently at Internacional.
The Brazilian striker would be a great addition for the French manager who wants a lethal hitman he could also use in Champions League games and rotate with Robin Van Persie. Arsenal managed to have excellent performances in the Champions League group stage and qualified from the first position easily despite being drawn in a difficult group, but Wenger is realistic that he needs to bring reinforcements if he wants to have a real chance at winning the trophy this season.
Wenger can’t look for a striker in Europe because all the top strikers have already played in this season’s Champions League and that would only leave him with the German international Podolski, so this is thinking out of the box for a change. A striker like Damiao could bring a massive input of positive energy and skill to the club and he will certainly be much better than Chamakh and Park even though he’s only 22 and has the ability to become one of the best hitmen in Europe.

Seems as if there are so many strikers to choose from atm… Doubt this is actually the case anyway… Though if it is, then hopefully with the increased supply, prices will be reasonable come January… and we end up with an actual goal scorer… Arsene, just pick one striker… then i guess we all just cross our fingers, and hope for the best… that’s how it normally is with player transfers anyways!!

I said a long while ago, if Arsenal does not want to go through another dramatic decline, as the did at the end of last season, we must employ a new effective striker, in January 2012. Chamakh has had his chance and unless there is a medical or mental problem, with him, then he is not going to make the grade. The purchase of a striker to rotate with Robin VP is essential and if he has not been involved in the Champions League, so much the better. Arsenal must “Bite the Bullet” and spend, if our challenge for trophies, is going to be a serious one.

I think we should buy Damiao, because podolski has had ups and downs and he cant do that in our legue. Also , damiao is 4 years younger and not that much worse, almost as good as podolski at that age!In the transfer season, if we buy a versatile centre back, mario gotze and damiao/ podolski we will be set to be top 3 in the season and get far in the champions league( even though gotze is cup tied)

Damiao is gonna be a good addition just sign him with podolski to give our squad more depth goin forward,then sign one more cb to shore up d defence,n I’m sure shitty,spuds,bloops n useless devils, will bow b4 us.

The only problem is its a guarantee that his club are going to want 20+ mill. They already turned down a couple of bids from totty, its clear they dont him to go on the cheap. Thats very negative news for arsenal.

Is Damiao that good? Brazilians are always a risk, they have been well known for not making the step up in Europe, let alone the English Premier League. Can anyone think of a Brazilian striker who has done well in the Premiership? Of course not all Brazilians fail in Europe.
Podolski seems slightly more of a safe bet, however even he is up and down. He shows glimpses of real quality, and then disappears. A bit like Arshavin and we all know how frustrated with him Arsenal fans are.
Both players are a risk, and both have positives and negatives. I do think a striker is very much needed. I question whether these two are the answer, but also I cannot think of an alternative

Just did some “research/youtube” on Leandro, he looks good. A real poacher with Brazilian flair. Thrives on being sent in on goal or scoring from crosses, exactly the kind of striker we need. He reminds me of Torres (of old), running off defenders. I’d say there will be a decent amount of competition though….20+ is a lot for an unproven Brazilian of 22 years….

I just want to remind Travis Bickle that if Damiao is good, then 20+m @22 is not bad unlike a 50m Torres . Remember some gooners had problem with 18yrs old AOC being bought @ 15m. But the boy has matured under wenger 2 me he is better than walcott.

What a signing he wud be..!! Watched a fare big of him and he creates a lot of luck for himself with persistence, audacity and imagination. Him and m’vila shud be our priority with either hazard or gotze being brought in to create a buzz around the club..With that said we’d be almost completely revitalized. M’vila wud be back up for song or play next to him giving us the ability to go for strength in the midfield playing the likes of stoke, wigan and such.Teams that camp we cud play 442 with deep central mids very wide wingers damiao playing last man and vanP roaming.. Or free-fliwing games we’d play a fluid 433 as we do now.. Most important thing bout these signings is they wud give us a plan b but also quality depth.. Now get the ball rolling by selling alumunia, squid, denilson, arshavin, bendtner and chamakh..!!

Just checked YouTube and he does remind me of Torres (Liverpool days). It is really hard to say if he will be good with Arsenal or not (don’t get me wrong he is talented from what I saw). My thinking process tells me that if we want a striker to compete with RVP and whom we can rotate without having to worry about scoring goals; then we must get someone that is very close to RVP level. At the moment, I can not think of many players that are.

someone that near to rvp level,play as a scond striker,play deeply such as rvp n also attacking,similar left footed,good finisher,good left footed player,cn play variety of position such as rvp such as central,let or right flank.similar technical ability.wil suits straight away under wenger n with rvp style he would managed to b like hem.one name in myhead.

i was reading arsenal french supporters forum where wenger said he has enough strikers that park is a work in progress he also mention benik afobe.
it also looks like chambo is training to be a striker, our new rooney or henri. new addition is fine but please don’t count your chicken with wenger. podolski for 20 millions? i don’t think so.
he might buy a striker but a cheap one for sure. dont expect big money signing in january

Chelsea paid 50mil for a player who had played 2 or 3 yrs in the Premiership, he was 27 when they bought him entering the “golden years” as they say. He was well proven quality and at one time arguably the best striker in the Prem.
Liverpool paid 25mil when he was 23, which in those days lol was a lot. Though he was proven in Spain, similar to Aguero, Both had played since a very young age for Athletico and made their names in being highly talented strikers.
Leandro is more of a risk, he hasn’t played a game in Europe and we are talking about the same price for Torres when he was 23.
Don’t get me wrong, I think he looks good, but he looks good in Brazil and in my opinion that doesn’t account for much.
I may be wrong, and I hope I am to be honest….if by a slim chance we do sign him, I’ll be on his side and welcome him with open arms.

Can’t see us signing him considering Internacional reportedly received a bid from Shakhtar of around £35mill. He’s another player far too over priced, Wenger’s the master at finding raw young talent and picking them up on the cheap.

damiao will be as bad as chamakh..a player like this suits only serie a/italian type play. We need a guy like Huntelaar if we want a physical presence. Another player who is rather young (22, I believe) and is a great talent is Athanasiadis from PAOK. Great player and would suit our style perfectly, hes good on the ball, hes fast, and a very clinical finisher. Plus he scored against the Spuds
