Wenger tells of sadness over the injury to Arsenal’s Andre Santos
Arsene Wenger made a grave error by playing Andre Santos in the irrelevant Champions League game against Olympiakos, and he now regrets it for both the player and the Arsenal squad, who could do with him still fit and well.
“I took a gamble because I did not want to be accused of just throwing the game away and I felt that therefore you needed a solid defence,” Wenger said today. “I wanted to be fair to the competition.
“Analysing him he came into the squad later and played less games than the others, and that’s why I played him. But I had a long hesitation before I picked him, believe me.
“I felt he was a bit tired in the game before, and he had problems finishing the game. The way it happened to him it could have happened to anyone. It was not a kick, there was no contact, he was just on his own. He ruptured his ligament.
“It is very disappointing because it is first of all sad for the player and sad for the Club. It hits us in a position where we of course already have many injuries and where he improved from game to game.
“The length of the injury is very sad as well because he is three months out. The only good news is that the surgery went well and so he should recover quickly.”
I don’t call three months quickly, but I guess for an Arsenal player that is quite fast……

The honesty and sincerity of Mr Wenger is one to be admired. We all have made mistakes and it takes a strong man to accept these especially to the whole footballing world. I respect that. Now, time to sort out the team and get that left back position sorted. If it means getting Vertogen and playing Vermelean in that position for now or getting an established epl left back like baines then let it be so ! A lot is riding on this season, a few key players i.e RVP, Theo, want to see our ambition before commiting also the fact that we need to attract decent players like Vertogen, Gotze, Vargas or Podolski and for the funs…..to bring this trophy drought to an end once and for all ! we also have the top four spot to fight for so we can play champions league next season …. and its not going to be easy. In Arsene we Trust !!! ( we need to get this team to a level where we can compete with the best because i for one would love to win the champions league soooooon ! )

Vertonghen is not the answer to LB.
“Gibbs is a maximum 1 week away.” Arsenal.com
Jenkinson will be a week after that, maybe 2 at most.
Sagna will be one month to a month and a half. (That would place his return sometime in January)
LB and RB is a position we don’t need investment in.
Vertonghen is not a LB, he is a CB and DM. Buy buying Vertinghen and playing him Lb would be like playing Vermaelen LB. I don’t know about you, but I think Vermaelen is far better at CB.
If we did get Vertonghen he would play CB, or cover in DM.
Opinions divided. What do you think?

@Travis Bickle you are right when u say that vertoghen is not the answer, but we do need to get a LB in a loan deal just in case Gibbs gets injured again or Santos takes longer to recover.

Guys, i understand that vertoghen is not the answer but he is versitile and we can use his link with the verminator to solidify our defence and as a stop gap till Gibbs or Santos are back. Then, we have some good competition in CB position.
if i was Mr Wenger,i would go with Bains, then add Gotze and top up with Vargas…..now thats proper fire power.

I hate fans that are pessimistic, that santos is out doesn’t mean we can’t play anymore, we will play and we will win… You may think that you are too important to people around without knowing that their are those that can deliver more than you… Up gunners… Time to discover new talent!

We just need to loan an LB, the best currently playing in the American league who are having a two months break as we await for Santos to be back and will continue from there, period.

What’s done is done! Get over it Arsenal fans!
I’d rather focus on the players we have currently in the squad at this point in time, than concentrate on looking for new talent. This weekend’s game is a big one, so lets get over this hurdle first.
I’m sick of hearing fans saying we should get Vertonghen or Baines, players that Wenger will never buy due to the fact that they’ll cost a decent coin and we already have enough defenders. I know, not currently as 4 are out with injuries but it’s only a short time until Gibbs deems himself fit. What i can see, is the Manager possibly buying a cheap versatile defender to make up the numbers. That sounds a whole lot more realistic than spending big and next year we say to ourselves, we’ve got too many defenders and now our budget’s depleted to get other quality signings next summer!
Damn, it frustrates me to see so many stupid demanding fans that don’t think first before they display their simpleton-like, idiotic, ignorant and ninnyhammer ways!

Nice to see we have many supporters that fancy thinking about the wellbeing of other clubs. The fact that SAF would kill competition, even when they are on the floor makes that he won so much. We now promote to be a friendly enemy loving club while at the same time wanting to win??? Guys I wonder what the average age of this board is, my God grow up please it doesn’t work like that. AW made a huge and possibly expensive mistake if we don’t make top 4. He alraedy did this for 5 years by sticking to players that are simply not good enough. Keep the faith
