Wenger: There’s not much money in the transfer market – unless you are rich!

Posted on January 06, 2012 by admin

Arsene Wenger has been asked about whether there is any news on the Arsenal transfer front, and he again stated that he is likely to bring in a loan player (Wayne Bridge?).

Wenger said: “At the moment nothing, we don’t have a concrete case but we don’t rule it out,”

“A loan defender is the likely scenario, yes.

He also thought that there wouldn’t be much buying of players this January due to the financial problems in the world right now, except for those teams (like Man City or PSG) who had a rich backer to pay whatever they liked to secure a player.

“I am expecting a quiet market. Europe is depressed and there is not a lot of money available, only some clubs who have exceptional resources. Let’s say that clubs who are not linked with the economic environment at the moment can buy!”

Wenger may have forgot to mention that although Arsenal don’t have a sugar-daddy to bankroll their purchases, the club certainly has more than enough financial surplus to compete for top players in the market.

The big downside to the depressed market is that Arsenal are also unlikely to be able to reduce their overall wage bill by offloading some of their (to put it politely) surplus-to-requirements squad members, therefore freeing up space to bring in quality replacements. I don’t think that Arsenal could even give away players like Almunia or Squillaci!

Here we go again. We have 2 of the richest people in the world who own arsenal. Constantly sold world class players. Yet we still can’t buy any world class talent. Bs it’s just the board and wenger being tight asses and wanting to make a profit. Wenger is an excellent manager but it is time for the board to be kicked out. What has this club Become?

As a Arsenal supporter for a long time, I know one thing that only AW can buy players at right price that any one else. And in the current situation of world economy, he really needs to spend sensibly. Don’t get me wrong guys; I am a rational personal, but a freak Arsenal supporter. Smoke screen stuff. Why must we always settle for 3rd best AW? We are the Mighty ARSENAL and should behave like such- professional, classy and victorius. We must get better cover in defence and a decent back up striker.Podolski would be perfect as he also plays on left. Sell the hangerson-Squillaci, Almunia, Arshavin (who has been unhappy for a long time in UK), Chamakh, even Walcott who is overated. Play Ox and Park. But most of all spend the cash available as Kroenke has stated.

Lets not forget winning trophys is all abt having better reserve players in cases of emergency. Finally if we dont get better reserves for song, vp, arteta and others, i strongly believe in absence from top 4 and trophyless project, where those who believe in AW and his board policy now will join us in a necessary cause for change.

  23. Big Gun says:

@Things are in a decline. Perhaps Arsenal are waiting for Fifa Financial Regulations to take effect. At the moment, I do not think it is actually a problem for Arsenal to splash out on one or two world class players. But there is a strategy in place and I think that is it. The board and company are saving what they can now, balancing the books and are getting ready for the regulations to hit. We all know City and Chelsea etc have way too much money to throw around, making it unfair on other clubs. Let’s face it, unless we and other clubs can buy the sort calibur players City are buying, we will never beat them.

So I think we all should just hang in here and realize there is a bigger picture to this whole situation. When the regulations do take effect, Arsenal will be smiling and City, Chelsea will have serious problems. That is if these financial regulations actually do come into effect, we have all seen big wigs turn a blind eye to the law when offered enough money. Let’s hope Fifa are strict enough and uphold what they intend to do.

I’m surprised that Wegner still thinks that us fans are to believe that money is tight. Wether it be wegner or the board they need to realise that we need strenghening and now. To think we could finish outside the top 4 is depressing, and i for one is getting fed up with the excuses we have to swollow. We have two multi billionaires on board who need to dig deep and splash the cash. So what if podolski could cost £12mil, What happened with hazard? All the interest then the price of £20+ and we run off. It’s a joke and if we are to be the team we know we can be then money needs to be spent.

  27. reddb10 says:

It is true that AW might just be playing word games with his statement just to give the message that we do not have money to keep the price down on any potential buys.
The thing is that us fans can take a look at what has happened during the past few seasons on the transfer market and to put it bluntly its not impressive.
We supposedly had a transfer budget of 30 million at the end of last season and if you add the Nasri 25 mill, Clichy 7 mill and Fabregas 35 mill income the total transfer kitty comes up to 97 million.
    we spent
    AOC 11
    Gervinho 11
    Park 3
    Jenkinson 1
    Santos 6
    Arteta 10
    Total 39 million

The painful truth is that with Kroenke and AW in charge we will never spend on proven world class players
In addition to this any of our players who over the years have become world class material will end up being sold by Gazidis to the club he supports who as we all know is Man City (if you don’t believe me Google it.

Now before the ‘in AW we trust’ mob start having a rant just sit back and make an assessment of the teams results over the past 6 seasons.
Has there been any improvement? NO
And don’y mention the league cup final last season where we got there by luck of the draw just to collapse mentally at the final hurdle.
It is getting worse every season and the frustration for us fans is that Manure and Chelski have not been good which means some shrewd transfers in critical positions could have turned things around. This proves on it’s own how incapable the people running the club are.
So how do we move on from where we are now.
Our only chance even though it is not easy is if Usmanov makes it to majority shareholder we are in business because he has been a supporter for many years and is twice as rich as Kroenke and 1000 times more generous.

As I have mentioned on older posts our curse was qualifying for the ECL group stage which means money guaranteed for the shareholders.
If we would not have qualified it would have broken our hearts yes, but we have gotten used to that happening in the past few years.
The thing is though that it would have also broken the shareholders pockets and that is a no go which means they would have had to take drastic measures and make changes.

But don’t worry fellow gooners this lot won’t be around forever but our great club and the massive fan base will be.
We pulled through the 50′s and 60′s and got a double and played three consecutive fa cup finals in the late seventies early 80′s.
Better times will come we just have to accept it won’t be with the current lot running the club.

Its sad that the manager sees we have 1 striker who can be relied upon but who has been lucky to avoid injuries this season despite being injury prone. Its also clear that if that same player don’t fire in any game we struggle. with injuries to other positions like defense, its only rational that the manager & board should rectify this in this transfer window but a failure might be a disaster for this team towards the end of this season. I stop by crossing my fingers but if we witness wat happened last season again this season, surely we shall need a change of management of our dear club.

I suppose we should wait till the close of this window. However the last few years windows activities have been disappointing. It looks like the club’s ambition is to get the 4th place for champions league and of course continue to fill the stadium. Purely business. If we fans know the team we currently have cannot win trophies then am sure the manager, board and majority share holders also know but unfortunately they are ready to settle for less as long as business is good.
I suppose we have to be realistic. If we love the club so much then we must make the management know we fans need to win as much as they need to make money.
For a football business to be good you need the fans to keep spending. I think the support will start to dwindle if we fall short at the end of the season till the management sort things out. Supporting Arsenal is like a religion, a way of life and that will never change but I guess we have to only pay back what we get. We desperately need a top striker for long term, a class creative mid more than anything. I won’t mind much if we have to use the reserve defenders for now or loan but our game style need midfield creativity as a must. Just imagine Barcelona game without much creativity in the mid. A tactical passing side like us need that more than anything else. Fingers crossed :)

The senile board fails to understand how much they lose financially in terms of arsenal as a ‘global brand’.when a club wins trophies and are serious abt their ambition, popularity goes up resulting in more viewers, merchandise sales etc.the board have been playing too safe when it comes to money.luk at united, god knows where they would have if they were a bit more liberal in transfers.wenger in a video says he was few thousand pounds from signing ronaldo.eventually fergusom got him, look at how much they earned with his move to madrid.imagine jersey sales of ronaldo, messi.apparently i read that madrid regained the 80mill by jus selling ronaldo jerseys…but if ffp rules are enforced,it will do arsenal a lot good!!!

The thing is though if we are in such dire straits financially why doesn’t Wenger take a pay cut on the 20 million he earns a year.(you can also check that as well if you want)
If he is the great leader you say he is and we have a wage cap and club salary policy, why doesn’t he lead by example and reduces his own wage?
He is the second best paid manager in the country second only to ferguson and in contrast where Ferguson is winning trophies Wenger is winning NOTHING.

He doesn’t need to spend 50 mil on couple of players but it is pretty obvious that he needs to strengthen the team a little. What is worrying me is that our new owner has a history of owning teams that become worse once he buys them. All of his teams have gotten worse since he took over. That is what’s happening with Arsenal too. I just hope that we won’t be like Liverpool, finishing 5th or 6th 3 years in a row.
