Wenger – Thomas Vermaelen is Arsenal’s new centre-back!
Arsene Wenger may have promised the Arsenal fans a new defender this summer (after Carl Jenkinson’s arrival I might add), but it seems that the return of Thomas Vermaelen (and maybe the departure of Gael Clichy!) is enough for Wenger to believe that the defence has been improved enough.
Wenger hasn’t seemed such a happy figure in his press conferences lately and when he was asked if Arrsenal were still going to sign a new centre-back, he went into a ramble about how the club was searching high and low but EVERYONE ELSE was also looking…….
“We have specialised people who work everywhere.” he said. “Every club looks for centre-backs in the whole world,”.
“People with unlimited resources look for a centre-back. We are not in a supermarket where you go to a shelf and you ask ‘where are the centre-backs or the strikers?’
“We are today in an international market where all over the world people look for the same players.”
Then he said a strange thing that makes it sound like they come to Arsenal if they can’t find better players anywhere else.
“Massive clubs have scouts all over the world and if they don’t find anyone, in the end they come to us.
“You don’t need to be a genius to understand that.” (Maybe a complaint against Man City, but what has it to do with centre-backs?)
But then Wenger said he had no intention of buying a new centre-back just for the sake of it, especially now that Vermaelen has returned to the squad.
“We will have a new centre-back by the end of the transfer window because Thomas Vermaelen only played five games last year. To buy just for the sake of buying – you won’t find me there.
“If I’m convinced the player has the quality, I will always do it if he’s better than the players we have.”
So now I’m very confused. Is he looking or isn’t he? Because if he IS, then I could name you TEN centre-backs better than Squillaci without doing a search……

He is looking. His just means that last campaign he was forced to rely on 3 CBs because of Vermaelen’s injury problem, so this time he wants 5 CBs. Therefore in case of any long term injury problem to 1 he would have 4 to rely on which is ideal. Read the quotes again!!

What worries me id that vermin is our best cb by far, but im pretty sure he wouldn’t get any where near man united or cheeses first team, and the rest of arsenals defense bar saga wouldn’t even get in the squad, this is where the investment is needed

Arsenal won trpohies in the past because apart from man u, other clubs did not hae money, but with the financial revolution in chelsea, man city and others, the man has lost touch with reality. He should just go and sit down.

If what I’ve just read on sky sports is true, then we are truly lost. Apparently since Valencia rejected his silly bid (£14m knowing full well that with £20m they would have got him) he is not making any further moves. Come on he was the signing I was most looking forward to, young, quick, creative, wants for a change to join the gunners having rejected better offers. Yet still stubborn Mr. Wenger does nothing. Where is the busy transfer summer I was promised.
Ok maybe another attacking player is not what we need (we actually do since we are losing two players) but at very least strengthten our defence…but noo, he says we have TV5 and we don’t need anyone else, so Vermaelen gets injured lo and behold Squillachi to the rescue. They also say he doesn’t have any interest in Jadson, don’t really care that much, as I haven’t heard or seen much about him, and Wenge probably knows best in this case, but if we’re losing Fabregas we need to spend some of that money in a suitable replacement, he might be already within our ranks but another decent player can’t be too bad. It’s not a joke, be serious. I want to see my side pushing for titles, scoring goals, showing class, hanging onto leads, instilling fear on ManU, Chelsea, City fans when they come to the emirates and not just take it as free three points.

He ain’t getting no one!!!! If we’re lucky he might get Dann but that’s about it. Any one else cost too much money in wenger’s eyes. What I can’t understand is how can he spend that much money on A young player that hasn’t proved him self at the top level. I’m all for us getting good young players but Wenger must realise that we are lacking some steel and experience in our team, look at City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool they have depth to their squad and if they felt a bit under strengthen in some positions they just brought the players. Goner till I die but god help us this season

I am seriously worried the other day we were apparently bringing in a defender. Now we aren’t even though the defence still looks awful. I think Thomas is a great player but we have a possible issue with left back, he doesn’t have a reliable partner and a combative midfielder is still needed.
Not to mention we were meant to keep the squad together even though we lost Clichy, Nasir and Fabregas. We needed additions anyway but havent even replaced what we need or lost.

I’m guessing it’s a French thing, although wenger isn’t technically French he’s alsace and possibly german alsace depending on who was in control at the time he was born, it tended to change quite regularly you see. @Philbet – yeah Wenger is playing poker for the last 6 years and we are seeing it… wake up my friend…. In any corporate world, you can be the top performer for a couple of years and get money and respect, but if you fail to perform for 6 years consecutively, you lose your job .. Period !!! Wenger’s unwillingness to spend big transfer money will reduce Arsenal into a mediocre club in the next couple of seasons.

Arsenal should replace Squillaci who is simply not good enough for the squad. In another hand, buying a new CD wont solve the problem. We also have a weak left side with Traore and Gibbs not good enough. There is a lack of experience and of culture of defense and one man will not change that. If he does, then this man must be TV5. I hope Wenger will find a specific coach for defenders and try to improve this aspect of our game. Everyone in the team is saying they are working hard on set pieces. Last year we were weak and had no depth. We start the season even weaker and with less depth. But OK gunners, lets go to war.

It was also reported on Sky Sports News this morning saying he promises a new CB will be signed before the end of the window, just because the season starts today dont mean thats it for any possible signings, give him some time to make some deals happen

Even if we buy scott dann & mata & messi + ronaldo we won’t win anything cause wenger was never a Good coach he was jus fortunate to have world class players & a board with vision when he arrived at arsenal, but the present arsenal board members r just after the money that we fans pay our hard earned money. Alisher usmanov is the richest man in russia few years ago he was not, thanks to arsenal this people r jus using us. Even if we end up in the 5th or 10th position wenger will never change & he knows he won’t make it at arsenal like he did in the past years that’s why he’s nt buyin cos if he does & we don’t win trophys fans will question him. I’ve just about had enough of watching wenger do nothing in the transfer market year after year. why didn’t we sell fabregas earlier in the summer? we would have had more funds and bought players sooner. why the hell hasn’t wenger bought a centre back??? why has he now gone off mata? are we even going to get anyone? and the most annoying thing is that he spends £15m on a bloody 17 year old who we don’t need!! this is getting out of hand and loads of fans are sick of it. we need at least one centre back because 4 including bloody squillaci isn’t going to get us anywhere. get cahill. spend whatever cos now we’ve got the money. get mata or hazard as a replacement for nasri and get jadson or another centre mid like Mario gotze or someone like that. do it soon wenger or many fans are going to get really angry.

I cannot believe what is happening to my club, the club I have spent thousands of pounds on supporting, buying my season ticket, travelling to away games!!..
Wenger says he does not need a centre back, and eludes that there are none availible.. what a load of crap, if he was not so tight, we could have Samba, Cahill, Mertsacker or Jagielka….
ANd then yesterday, Wenger said..”We will not do (a deal for) Juan Mata. I don’t have to give a reason,” he said….
Well excuse me, you DO have to give a reason, comments like that are treating the fans and supporters with contempt… the same way the comment about his very busy summer in the transfer window (conveniently said before the season ticket renewals had to be completed) have amounted to nothing….
I love my club, but see other clubs improving their teams, and us weakening it with the imminenet departures of Fabregas, Nasri, Bendtner, Eboue, and possibly Vela on loan…

Here is what i would do . as we currently have 5 centre backs of which at least 2 are not good enough for.what we need i would buy sell squillaci and loan out out miquel. as of the 5 they are the 2 weak links. With eboue also leaving i am uncomfortable with our full back cover as well therefore i would buy 3 centre backs one that could play rb scott dann one that could play left back vertonghen and finally the one we reall need in the middle mertesacker or samba or.cahill. i would then be looking at one or 2 of my centre backs also being able to cover song and frimpong especially if both go to the acn. dont forget we could also traore then. as well as gervinho and chamakh.

Put the whole whos comin whos goin stories aside and suport the team, the press / media is tryin to drive a wedge btween us fans and the team and its plain to see. No one has a good word to say about arsenal bcos they know our frustrations and they are jus adding fuel to the fire writing all these stories which 95% are false. Wenger is under alot of pressure to deliver this season and he knows it so lets judge at the end of season but at the moment us fans need to b the 12th man and give the team our support regardless of who comes or goes and dont believe or get caught up with what these nay sayers have to say.. cmon Arsenal

yeah hes had time to buy players and he has, just because none of them have been a CB doesnt mean he wont sign one, when will you people realise he had bids for Jagielka, Cahill, Samba all rejected, but that clearly proves hes after signing one, the transfer window hasnt shut yet so why are people acting as if thats it for signings, once the window closes then have a look at who hes signed and I for one believe there will be a CB as hes been trying to sign one for a while, give it some time!

He has done great things for Arsenal and he deserves alot more respect and gratitude than he is currently getting. Although his policies are frustrating he is doing the right thing (keeping the club financially stable whilst bringing through young talent). He is a credit to the club.

It pisses me off that Wenger put in a 14m bid for Mata and made Valencia want to shut off bids. Every man on the planet and his dog would have told you Mata wouldn’t have left for anything under 20m…
And then he does the same on Jagielka, and shits on the chances to buy Cahill and Samba.
I just PRAY now that he will buy Dann, Vertonghen and Santi Cazorla with the money from the departure of Cesc and Nasri. Making a deal with FC Twente to swap Bryan Ruiz for Bendtner would not be bad.

He just lies now to avoid telling the truth, which is he hates spending money on defenders because he’s just not that interested in it.
