Wenger to buy up a “British Backbone” for Arsenal? Doyle anyone?
Now this must be one of the strangest Arsenal transfer rumours this summer! The Mirror reckons that Arsene Wenger is preparing a £12m bid for the Wolves striker Kevin Doyle after seeing him play his heart out for the Republic of Ireland against France.
It seems that Wenger’s plan is to get Doyle, along with Gary Cahill and Scott Parker to put some British grit into the team, alongside Jack Wilshere.
That in itself sounds like a great idea, as it is a well-known fact that all successful Premiership teams have had a good selection of top English players willing to play their hearts out for a win, something that seems to be seriously lacking at Arsenal recently.
It seems the 27 year-old Doyle has two years left on his contract at Wolves, and Mick McCarthy is keen to extend it this summer with the blessing of the board. The Wolves chairman Steve Morgan said: “I’m sure we’ll have those conversations with Kevin and his agent at the right time.
“Kevin has been a fantastic signing for this club and is a really, really key player for us. We’d like to secure his services going forward.”
I’m not too sure how this rumour started. I can honestly see Wenger trying to get Gary Cahill for all the right reasons, and Scott Parker would be an excellent steadying influence for a couple of years, but Kevin Doyle?
Does anyone believe this is serious?

Kevin Doyle is a mid table player at best. If this is extent of our ambition then we might as well kiss the champions league goodbye right now. However I can’t see Wenger paying £12 million for such a limited player, he’s just not that crazy.

I dont know if its true or not but all i know is that Kevin Doyle plays football with his heart. The last game of the season, which player out there looked like they were playing with winning on there mind and not money. Arsenal as we know it has come to an end. Wenger has led us into a black hole because of his own stupid methods. The only reason Wenger has not been sacked is because his making a hell of a lot of money for the upstairs of AFC. Any other top club like us would have sacked ther manager 2 seasons into not winning a trophy, but weve still got ours and its been tripple that.

Seriously, are you joking? Kevin Doyle is no where near good enough to play for us. We are Arsenal! Not relegation fodder! A few key signings would sort us out….3 signings would do. Samba, Cahill & Gervinho. Plus another midfielder IF both Fab & Nasri leave. If not, then look at the team, its amazing…

Pie – A tenner says that at least 3 of your squad wont be at the club this season.
Clichy is having a medical as we speak and unless we sell some more then we wont sign anymore as we will still have 25 players over 21.

I’m Irish and i love doyle on the irish squad. In saying that though, i don’t think he’s arsenal quality. A good player with real heart and would never drop the head but just not got any goals in him. If he played up front for Barca he wouldn’t score 20 a season. everything else is great about him but we need goals. sorry kev..

God forbid, what on earth do we need him for when we av d likes chamack and bendtner, they are like for like playaz, as 4 nasri and fab, they both can leave 4 all i care, wenger should just bring in samba, cahill,gervinho, alvarez and any of hazard or downing for nasri. Do you seriously think we’ll ONLY buy Gervinho? There will be at least 3-4 signings this summer. Just be patient. We don’t even know what’s happening with Miyaichi yet. We will offload some to. Clichy is halfway to man city already. Bendtner will eventually go to another club. He’s crap but we value him at 13.5M to inflate his price and head. Really we’re happy with 10M, or what the heck anyone can have him for free! Denilson will be a bargain buy for anyone I believe even though he doesn’t play the Arsenal way. He is still a skilled player regardless. And playing for Arsenal does look good on the resume. Almunia likely to go to a Spanish team. I stress about Squillaci not being able to find a new nest.
We will get 2 defenders thats for sure, either a combination between a left back and centre back or 2 central defenders. We will buy at least one quality midfielder and Gervinho will soon join. Look on the bright side, sigh with relief after 6-7 weeks time.

I’m always amused by people who insist on giving their opinion despite an obvious lack of information on the topic. I’ll bet most of the muppets criticising Kevin Doyle have seen nothing more than snippets of him. Equally, they’ll jump to demand the signing of whatever overpriced “next Messi” manages to get touted around Europe by his agent. I’ve seen Doyle play many times for Reading, Wolves and for The Republic of Ireland, Arsene could do a lot worse than spend 12 million on a target man like Kevin Doyle. He’d bring a work rate to the team that we have not seen in many of the current bunch for years (if ever) and he’s as honest as they come. Bring Shane Long with him for his pace and we could think of days beyond RVP (although I’d hope Robin will stick around for a few more years). Scott Dann also seems to be the pick of the defender options, we don’t always need the overpriced exotic options.

English doesn’t matter, but we do need more of the kind of attitude that players like parker show. We need a new flamini basically.
Strikers need something different. It’s one thing to work hard, and doyle is a good player, but we need forwards with that killer instinct in front of goal, and I don’t think he has that.
