Wenger to give Coquelin chance for Arsenal

Posted on September 15, 2012 by Bob

The word on the streets is that Arsene Wenger is going to give Francis Coquelin his first appearance of the season and start him today against Southampton. Coquelin has been crying out for his opportunity and has spoken in the media about thinking of moving on if he was not getting any playing time at Arsenal.

He will need to take his chance and impress because, apart from domestic cup games, there will not be many chances once Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Emmanuel Frimpong return within the month. Diaby’s knock, Walcott’s illness and Ramsey’s nightmare for Wales have opened the door for the 21-year old Frenchman, and he needs to get his foot firmly in it today.

Coquelin is a versatile player who can play either right midfield or right back but sees himself mainly as a defensive midfielder. Ha has probably got until January before Wenger looks to bring a new DM into the Emirates so it is now or never time. The player impressed during his season on loan at Lorient but did not feature much for the Gunners on his return last season.

If he has a solid and impressive game today, he may well find himself in the line up that plays in Montpellier on Tuesday. After that Arsenal will take no chances as they travel to Manchester City before hosting Chelsea. Let’s hope Le Coq can show us that he is good enough to be a Gunner.

As a RB, Coquelin is ten-times better than Jenkinson. I thought he was going to start the season and push Sagna to fight for his place.

a quality player i think and if he can do his defensive duties properly he could be a great DMF. I feel he is very similar to mascherano.

@Rodrigo Caio – I don’t doubt his playing ability at all, but Frimpong has suffered so many big injuries already. While I’d love to see him make it at the club, he’s hardly a banker due to these injury concerns. Coquelin is similarly talented (IMO a much better pure footballer) and should be kept and developed if at all possible. The 2 could compliment eachother very well in the same midfield anyway.

If Coquelin plays very well today he might give Diaby a run for his money
