Wenger wants Nasri decision quickly as Downing awaits
It has been reported that one of Arsenal’s chief scouts was at the Aston Villa v Liverpool game at Villa Park last week to have a last-minute check on Stewart Downing, who, according to today’s Mail, Arsene Wenger has pinpointed as a possible replacement for Samir Nasri.
Downing rose to the occasion and scored the winning goal for Villa, and the winger’s announcement this week that he is “considering his future” at Villa Park has encouraged Wenger in the chase.
Downing said: “I know Villa are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal.
“However, I am 26, and at a major crossroads in my career, so I won’t be committing to a new deal at the moment.
“The most important thing is to play football, but I do want to play in the Champions League at some point.”
So now Wenger has told the Arsenal board that he wants a definitive decision from Nasri (on whether he’s staying or going) as quick as possible. If the answer is negative then Wenger can make his move on Downing sooner rather than later.

Downing can never be a better replacement if nasri said he is leaving..Downing is a prolific player.. But nasri got the flare.. Talent, he got the skill.. remember he was quoted the next zidane.. But if he said he want to leave.. Then downing hv to come in..or HAZARD THE WIZARD..

Half way through the season Nasri was a delight to watch then someone or something got into his head and he started to lose concentration and his game tappered off. Maybe there`s a spin off of the Adebayor philosophy, if so it`s better he goes.

Downing is crap compared to nasri and even arshavin come to that. He also prefers the right wing! Again we are being held to ransom by a player because of our wage structure. Either we pay up or this will continue every summer. My belief is nasri and clichy will both leave and i expect cesc arshavin bendtner denilson Rosicky Almunia Vela and eboue to leave as well. I think wenger will play a 41311 formation next season which is a variation of 442. It means the 3 has the flexibility of playing with 2 wingers and a playmaker or 3 playmakers.

is Nasri not signing a new contract because he wants a better salary or because he just wants to leave Arsenal.If its the former just hand him a contract extension in the range 90-100 thousand per week.And sell Fabregas(despite the fact that hes probably Arsenals best player)

You fellow arsenal fans sometimes amaze me. Neither Hazard or Downing can be compared to Nasri. He is asking to be paid relatively the amount as fabregas, which i think is fair. Nasri has shown since arriving that he is a great player who is still developing. He works harder than fabregas, keeps the ball under pressure better than fabregas, and stands his ground when we get bullied. Then he is a clinical finisher.
I am sorry but this is exactly why we not winning trophies. Wenger and you are arsenal fans do not treat our best players equally. And Nasri does not want to go. He just want an increase along the line of a player who wants to leave, does not care anymore and who is mentally far weaker than him.
I THINK WE SHOULD KEEP HIM OR BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, I’M AFRAID. CONTINUITY IS IMPORTANT WHEN WE HAD TO SUFFER FOR SIX SEASONS FOR THIS TEAM TO COME GOOD, THEN WE LET THE BEST ONES LEAVE.

Nasri has been rubbish in the second half of the season, he is one of the reason why we ended up trophyless. He is very innefective in the final third. Alvarez is miles better than Downing.

@ Aussie Jack – I think it was that bloody Arshavin that got into his head as their very close and are reported to socialise a lot together with their Russian wives. Arshavin know’s he’s out the door, is disgruntled and is not going quietly, by whispering in Nasri’s ear and winding him up.

I’m gutted at the club we have become. We buy players and some like nasri no-one else wanted then they say they might leave. Yes Nasri was always talented but after he had meningitis no other club wanted him but Wenger took a chance and look how he is repayed. When we sign players we should ask if they are prepared to see the contract thru and if they start trying to leave like fabregas did like many others have too then they should be forced to see out the remainder of their contract in the reserves or on the bench. ffs lads why do you all seem to like biting the hand that feeds you. You don’t ever see this happen at clubs like Barca, real, man u, chelsea do you. And when it does its a rare thing. I MEAN HONESTLY HOW DO WE EXPECT TO WIN ANYTHING WHEN PLAYERS ARE DREAMING OF PLAYING ELSEWHERE.

I read somewhere that if Scot Parker is too expensive then Arsenal will go for Eden Hazard (as Arsenal will spend more for a younger player than one who’s 30). So I would assume that its more of a case of Nasri or Downing, although I would rather we be saying Arshavin or Downing!

Nasri made incredible moves and worked hard for the team but you need to acknowledge he does not have the qualities to be playmaker. Fabregas performed quite poor this year and Rosicky was rubbish. Why Nasri did not raise to replace effectively? Because he does not want it. He does not like it. IT is not his way of playing. The playmaker need to let or make others shine instead of himself. This is not Nasri’s mentatily. It is OK since he can do great like that but I do not believe he can be playmaker. He is very talented but he is not altruistic enough and his vision of game is not good enough. Hazard is better. Hazard can play winger of second striker, playmaker. Nasri is more like a wizzard but Hazard plays better with the team. The best thing for Arsenal would be to have Nasri/Fabregas/Hazard in the midfield.

Downing is indeed crap, if he joins the Emirates I will not be a happy bunny. If Cesc wants to go let him go for a good price, maybe try and get someone from Barcelona out of the deal (maybe Afellay or Bojan?), buy Hazard, Baines, Falcao and Sakho, also propel Miyaichi up to the first team if possible, and fund these transfers by selling Almunia, Rosicky, Vela, Denilson, Clichy and Bendtner. A complete overhaul of this squad is necessary for next season and if it doesnt happen i will lose all faith in Wenger. enough is enough, its time to splash some cash.

Sell all the players that we don’t need. We all know who they are! Gain 30-40m from them.
Then go and buy samba or Cahill, jag, Parker, downing, hazard, Falcao. Keep nasri. Sell fab for 30m. We would only need to spend 40 odd million after all the sale’s of our outgoing players. Job done.

If Downing replaces Nasri, Arsenal just bought a propeller plane to replace a fighter jet. Downing is too skill less to be compared to Nasri. Yes he has more grit but we can get grit with some skill at least. Arsene wouldn’t buy defenders that’s why everyone is holding on to see what he will do before they re-commit themselves to the club. Its useless to be in a club where you are up 4 goals to nothing middle of second half and you still don’t win the match. The players are all protesting to Wenger for refusing to buy defenders and making them labour in vain. Can you blame them… i dont.

we are all icing and no cake ! we have to many flair players and not enuf function players to get stuck in and do the unpleasent stuff!
even united have park, oshea, fletcher and carrick because they no that for all the flair of nani and co it means nothing without the funcional players.
is downing a great player ? no!! but hes a solid consistent player who if you give a job to will do it no questions asked, and will put half a dozen decent balls into the box every game without fail aswell as track back.

Toby, it is Wenger who needs to wake up, but yes we’ve long needed some grit, steel and bite. But we also need world class cb’s, yes at least two more, offload djourou, it’s ruthless but this is what needs to happen if we are going to win something meaningful.
These continual spectacular collapses at the business end of the season, when it is all on the line, cannot bear repeating. The players we have can talk all day long about how they are ‘up for it’, but we’ve seen what they are able to do, they need massive reinforcements.
Nasri, has proclaimed publicly that we lack defensive qualities, I am in total agreement.
