Wenger – Wigan won’t be easy, but we’re fighting for the title!

Posted on December 03, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger still thinks that Arsenal are way behind Man City in the title race right now, but there is still a long season ahead and the Gunners simply have to keep winning to put themselves back in the title race.

Wigan may be bottom of the League, but Wenger knows that Arsenal have not beaten Roberto Martinez’s team away for the last two seasons, but he hopes that will not be a factor today.

Wenger said: “I believe we have won already at Wigan, and that is what we want to achieve again. We were a bit under pressure last time to win, but Charles N’Zogbia was always on fire against us.

“I believe it has always been a committed game, always been a good game.

“They play football. You look at the number of passes – they try to pass the ball out from the back, they try to play the Spanish way.

“We do not want to drop points. Wigan are a good team, they are at home and they are a dangerous side. I think last year was a bit special but I think they always had good players in the last three or four years.

“Many of them have gone now but they always have good players. They have replaced them again this season and they now look like they are coming back with a bit more confidence.

“They will be a good opposition again. For us we just need to focus on our performance and try to win the game.

“The whole view is that, after a bad start, we are back in contention to fight for the Champions League places. We’re not at the moment contending for the championship but our target is to get back into that position.

“We have to continue our good run. We had a disappointing draw at home to Fulham last week and we want, of course, to come back and continue our run.

“For the rest, it looks like there is a group of seven or eight teams who will find until the end for the championship, with Manchester City looking like the super favourites at the moment. But it’s early in the season.”

Wenger will revert back to his first-team after Tuesdays disappointing loss to Man City, and with no need to win against Olympiakos in midweek, so we can expect to see Mr Van Persie’s name back on the scoresheet!

**Van Persie’s first 100 goals for Arsenal – 10 goals per minute! – Brilliant!**

the key to our chances for this season is to not play for the title nor the champions league spot, nor the europa league spot… we need to play for every match and not think to much about what could happen…

If Spurs/Manshity/Chelsea or even ManU played Wigan today, we would all expect a win. This is how is must be with Arsenal. We must take three points and accept nothing less, if there is to be any hope of lifting the title. It’s no good beating Chelsea one week, then drawing against a lesser team, the week following. The Arsenal have shown a good fighting spirit and this must be retained, right up to the finishing line. I was very doubtful, two months ago, that we would get a Euro League place. For having negative thoughts like that, I deserve to be taken outside and executed in front of my own family. Now I believe that a Champions League place is the least I can expect. So….no more negative thoughts and get a positive three points today.

arsenal fans are probably amongst the worst in terms of support in the premier league. last week against fulham 50,000+ arsenal fans were sat in silence for the majority of the match, even 10,000 fulham fans were making more noise than us. is that what you really call support? I sorry but dont you want teams think of the emirates as an intimidating place to come? we would certainly win more games at home

Winning games against teams like Wigan are crucial. We cannot afford to lose points against these type of teams. It is when we play teams like United, City, Chelsea a win is more of a bonus, although I believe we have what it takes to beat any team in the EPL. We have the quality, all Wenger needs to do is make sure his selection and subs are up to scratch…like when he substituted Park the other night where it was obvious Chamakh should have been subbed.

Anyway, like in any game, we need to get to the ball first and fight for everything. 3 – 1 to the Arsenal

Walcott actually stopped and waited for RVP to get to him before making the pass for his goal, Walcott is on fire and we need to give him a lot more credit for this seasons performances.
One more thing, this statistic off BBC sports:
“Arsenal ended a run of 179 corners without a goalin the Premier League when Thomas Vermaelen scored”

  24. Not only was today a Brilliant performance from us Gunners but Critics were pretty much answered partly today with a Variety of Goalscorers; From different positions and the saying of RVP being a One man team proven false.Dominated Posession as always.I dont think i have to add to this other than COME ON ARSENAL!!!

That was a haaard match. 4-0 was a lucky win for us. I mean persie can’t shoot to save his life… Walcott is slow, gervinho can’t dribble, vermaelan can defend, the pole is rubbish…. LOOOL! I love wenger’s mind games. But in all seriousness, that was a BRILLIANT performance from the boys. This is the leadership we’ve been crying for and persie and the verminator are leading us to glory. Nearly 20 goals between them, I LOVE IT! We need to carry on been ruthless and not worry about titles cause then we’ll fail again. Let’s just do what we did with the invincibles and just carry on and dnt even worry about any title until we get to the semis and it 3 points and 2 games left in the prem league. Wenger need just one more signing and in the right postion and we carry on. Great work from the boys again. AFL

all good except rambo looks fatigued also think gary speeds untimely death has hit him hard. he def needs a few weeks to freshen body and mind and both frimpong and coquilen are ready so come on wenger share the load, not just against panithanikos but against villa too, just watched villa again and they are so poor we could rest half the team for that one! theyve got no fight at the momment and our youngsters would eat them alive, apart from angbonglohor who i think we should seriously be thinking about making a bid for this january.

  27. Big Gun says:

Thomas Vermalaen is the best CB in the league without a doubt. With him and the Polecat I goals I feel safe. Santos has such great anticipation, but on the odd occasion he misses a tackle and struggles to back track. A real pity as if he was faster, he would also be one of the greatest defenders in the league.

Great performance tonight, Ramsey looked much sharper, I may have judged him too soon. Arteta also looking hungrier for the ball keeping the midfield rolling. Song, brilliant as usual. Pretty much everyone had a great game, Walcott and Gerv very threatening.

Keep it up gunners, us fans are soooo proud of you all.

All great except Song,in the second half he lost,as usual, ball twice when we were attacking and allowed Wigan to create dangeorous counter attacks.Fortunately,we have Verm and Mert to correct his stupid mistakes.

  29. Rex says:

Even with excellent result is not everybody that will be excellent. The amount of good runs that the opponent will put up must comes up through a mistake made by our own players. So let us forget about blaming any of our players instead talk to encourage them. Gunners even when boatman arrive!

Mertesaker is soooooooo slow! And why on earth does he go to ground so easily…. The man is like a million feet tall.. i love arsenal to bits but to be honest a game like this should be a standard win… At the beginning we looked a bit shakey but hat off to the boys, we pulled it back…. An as a plus, we did it with different scorers… Hopefully gervinho will start scoring more goals and i would be kinda sad to see chamakh leave…

Looking forward to tuesday, really wanna see the likes of miyaichi, oxlade-chamerlain, park and coqelain in a champions league game… But 1 question… If we feild a weakened side and lose, woul uafa fine us?

  32. Ash says:

We look like a more solid team than the past years..I think this is due to 3 main reasons: 1.Vermaelen..he just reminds me of a more athletic version of vidic, such a all round defender 2.the emergence and improvement of koscielny,he is brilliant in the air and he reads the game effortlessly, the modern day centre back and easily becoming one of my favourite players and finally and quite surprisingly 3.mikeal arteta..the guy is very disciplined and gives us a nice blanche in the middle,he’s work rate and strength is not something I was expecting from him and I think he’s giving us alot of stability. This arsenal team r impressing me not due to the free flowing football but due to the spirit and strengh, yeah we,re not the finished article but we look very confident and with teams looking scared of gervinho and Walcott running at them and Rvp turning everything gold we look good..only worry is I don’t see Ramsey as that cutting edge playmaker..gotze would complete this side and with coquelin Frimpong and wilshere coming into the fold in the 2nd half of the season I can see good times ahead
