Wenger – With Gallas out I will rotate Campbell and Silvestre

Posted on March 09, 2010 by admin

Arsene Wenger has already said that he will be playing Sol Campbell alongside Thomas Vermaelen in this evenings game against Porto, but the Arsenal boss is aware that he cannot expect the 35 year-old to play twice a week at the top level.

He says that he will have to rotate Sol with Mikael Silvestre in the coming weeks while Gallas recovers, although he is not too happy about playing two left-footed players together.

Wenger is certainly very happy that he decided to sign Campbell as cover when he did. “It was unexpected that Sol would play so many games, but it is also good because I think it was the right decision to bring him back,” he said. “Sol is a guy who gives everything when he is on the pitch.

“Can his body still take two or three games in a week? Who knows. But we have a good mixture with him and Mikael Silvestre because he is also a player who gives everything on the pitch, so we can rotate them. The only problem is that when you play with two left-footed players sometimes Vermaelen is not always in his best position.

”Sol wants to win and he can spread that through the team and give advice. We want to win this game against Porto, but we also need to be patient maybe and it is important to keep your head. He gives us a good mixture, it is not only him, but there is a good blend of youth and experience.”

Campbell will need all his experience tonight as Arsenal need to make sure of a clean sheet to make sure of progression, and with any luck he will also score again!

Rotating the 2 old boys is fine until TV or one of them gets injured then what? Senderos, Hoyte, Nordveit and Bartley on loan for season. I have heard today that Gallas could have played his last game for us, he has an injury yes, but has had talks with other clubs in the last few days. Only leaves Ayling or move our only DM into the back 4. Bad planning, i am afraid so lets just keep our fingers crossed that TV stays fit.

  3. Samuel says:

One can always play Song or even Diaby deep in defence Everton style with Fellaini, what,s the problem?

  4. Goonerbeall says:

Please, stop talking about Sylvestre. This way Wenger might forget who the f… he is and therefore force him out. He calamity incarnate. He is so poor our kiddies would be better to have in defence.

As of tonight, What will be will be. Dont you worry, we need to see how we gonna fare if and when Cesc leaves because he’ll leave one day.

At a push it’s just a case of putting Sagna in central defence. When he’s played there before he’s done alright …. and have Eboue obviously as right full-back.

Or Song who is a central defender can play there. We have other players who can play defensive midfield.

Djourou is on the verge of returning from injury and is confident of seeing out the end of the campaign.
