Wenger’s best defensive options….
Today’s Guest Post comes from a new Arsenal fan site called ArseneWenger.com. Being specialists in Wenger’s thoughts hopefully they will be able to help us all interpret the great mans psychological musings in the future…..
Wenger’s New Player Options for Arsenal’s 2010-2011 Defence
January is usually the time when Premier League teams conduct player transfers. This season Arsenal fans are anxiously awaiting Arsene Wenger’s decision to sign on new players. In a recent interview, Arsenal’s manager reportedly said that he might take a decision regarding this by the end of January. He stated that his decision would be contingent on Thomas Vermaelen’s recovery. With the centre-back injured, the manager might have to consider strengthening his team’s defence. Here are 5 potential defences Wenger can consider for his team for the new season:
Mamadou Sakho
For a while now, Wenger has admired Mamadou Sakho’s abilities on the field. However, he is not the only manager who recognizes the centre back’s skills. At the age of twenty, Mamadou Sakho has more than a hundred games to his credit. This Paris Saint Germain has played for the French under-21 team, who consider him a crucial player and leader. The player has a resolute attitude along with both strength and speed. With a transfer price not likely to exceed 15 million pounds, Mamadou Sakho may be a good defence option for Arsene Wenger to consider.
Phil Jagielka
During the summer of 2010, Arsene Wenger tried to bring in Phil Jagielka. However, manager David Moyes declined Wenger’s bid to transfer the Everton FC player. With the club continuing to perform poorly, the defender might consider a shift to Arsenal. Though of small build, Phil Jagielka is a strong defender. His playing style is similar to that of Thomas Vermaelen. He has played five seasons with the Premier League. During this time, he has played more than 400 games in Britain. The English international’s asking price may come close to 20 million pounds.
Gary Cahill
Gary Cahill is another English international who has played consistently and reliably for Bolton Wanderers. With his dedication to playing top notch football, the 24-year old has built a strong reputation. Owing to this, numerous Premier League clubs are trying to sign Gary Cahill onto their teams. Though his asking price is high and close to 13 million pounds, Wenger may have an advantage over others with respect to bringing in Cahill. Owen Coyle, manager of Bolton Wanderers admires several of Arsenal players. So Wenger might be able to loan some of his players in return for Cahill.
Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen, a backline player for Ajax is a Belgian international. Many believe he should consider a shift to one of the Premier League clubs. If he does so, he is most likely to consider Arsene Wenger’s club. This may be partly because the football player is close friends with Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal. As Vertonghen and Vermaelen have formerly played together with Ajax and share a similar style of playing, signing him on may prove to be beneficial for Arsenal. With a possible asking price of 15 million pounds, Wenger may find this twenty three year old player a little expensive.
Neven Subotic
Another player Wenger has been trying to sign on over the past few seasons is Neven Subotic. Arsenal fans are hopeful that Arsenal’s manager might be able to sign on the player during this transfer window. One reason for this is that the Serbian has immense strength and self-control on the pitch. Also, his commanding presence may help offset the poor defence that Arsenal has been experiencing of late.
Arsenal fans believe that by bringing in a powerful new centre back, the club might be able to break their five year jinx of going without trophies – we hope so too!

Nice thoughts but Wenger paid 10 mill for Koscielny who he plans to partner with Verm as starters. All of these players would be long term solutions and Wenger will not be interested and I doubt he would exceed 10 mill for a defender anyway

why not samba? I don’t know if it’s right, but I read he would cost less than 10 mill. He has Prem experience, and I assume he would probably be satisfied providing cover with the chance of breaking in to more games because it would be a move out of blackburn (where he said he wants to leave) to a top 4 club. I don’t think he’s the best on the market, but might be right for the situation.

Chris Samba fits the bill more than any of the guys you’ve mentioned because he has EPL experience, will be below 10 million pounds and is a hard worker.

Samba is just as slow and clumsy as Squillaci. We need someone tall and dominant like Samba, but someone with speed and tactical prowess as well

From what I’ve seen and it’s not very much at all, Ciani seems to be a leaner, quicker Samba. And he seems to pose a threat from set pieces too. Why not have a pop at him? Again, just want to say seen very little of this guy, and he seemed to be good.

When buying a defender, you need to know he has to be strong physically, able and BRAVE to challenge for a header and a no nonsense attitude under pressure. Unfortunately, Koscielny and Squillaci are neither. Djourou has this potential though, but not yet there.
There are only 3 players that fit the requirements: Jan Vertonghen (best pairing with Vermaelen, even though he’s also left-footed), Chris Samba and Subotic!

I cant work Wenger out sometimes, he paid 10 mil for Koscielny who is absolute dog shit yet wont go and spend 7 or 8 mil on Samba whos proven. He still believes we have a world class goalie for christs sake. We need a new GK, Samba and Hazard or all were gonna win is the poxy Carling Cup. That might be a big trophy to clubs like Sp#rs but we should be walking away with the Title with the other players we have

Pls buy either Subotic or Mamadou Sakho or Jan Vertonghen and all our defensive problem will go away…. Cahill is not that strong defender we need and Samba is ok but not gr8 enough…. Phil is aaight 2

Vertonghen, the center back equivalent of Van Persie. The last thing we need is another injury prone player, especially in the defense department.

Jan Vertonghen would do nicely, can cover a shitload of positions, technically excellent, a good defender, and has played with vermaelen at club and country level, wenger sign him up!

Until Vermaelen returns after surgery (6 weeks at least) we have the partnership of Djourou and Koscielny which is a perfectly good one (regardless of what some are saying).
The present window doesn’t close for another 19 days, leaving plenty of time for AW to do a possible deal. The problem with new buys, of course, is that unless they originate from the EPL, it takes time for Continentals to bed in. (AW used to say “a year”).

Some great prospects there that make you lick your lips. But what about Chris Samba? Always rated him very highly and apparently he’s unsettled at Blackburn after Allardyce’s sacking

Indeed we need a Defender. Why is Wenger in denial. Koshielny is pathetic, may I say, so is Bendtner, but still Wenger believes he is an Arsenal player. I say by a new defender, anyone above except Cahill. Also by a striker, Benzema perhaps.
