Wenger gives Szczesny Number One today and says he is “not really” interested in Schwarzer!
The goalkeeping dilemma at Arsenal took a new twist today, as Arsene Wenger gave Wojcneich Szczesny the Number One jersey against Barnet, but only played him for the last 22 minutes.
Manuel Almunia was out “injured” yet again, and Lukasz Fabianski played the first 45 minutes wearing number 21, and the second half saw Vito Mannone play the first 22 minutes wearing 24, and then Szczesny came on until the end.
The only problem was that as Arsenal easily won 4-0, none of the keepers had much to do! The game can’t have helped Wenger much in deciding who will be the main keeper for the new season, but perhaps Sczcesny’s shirt was a pointer? Or perhaps just Wenger playing games with the fans?
After the game Sky Sports asked Wenger directly if he was trying to buy Mark Schwarzer, and the Frenchman replied ” Not really.”
“We are still looking at various situations, but I would not like to come out on any individuals.”
Sky then asked him if he knew who would be his first choice keeper for the new season and he replied: “At the moment, in pre-season, there is no No.1 – you have to give a chance to everyone to show how good he is. You cannot decide that today.”
It was interesting that Szczesny wore the Number One shirt, and it also interesting that Fabianski was played for the whole of the first half, but neither fact gives us any clues to Wenger’s thoughts. And is Almunia really missing through “illness”……
It looks to me that Wenger is still going to keep the fans guessing up until the end of the transfer window………

Yeah, but Frimpong wore #4. I think that’s more their youth/reserve team number rather than their first team squad number.

I think it only because Wojcneich Szczesny has no number and the number1 is free exactly that time.so it means nothing.

Szczesny won’t be number one – he made too many mistakes, like the one touch pass to his defender which could have easily been intercepted, and some other silly mistakes in his decision-making.
I reckon, in terms of our problem of not being able to catch balls in the air – Vito Mannone will be the solution because he’s more stocky and stronger than our first two keepers. However, he’s inexperienced.

i guess wenger should give the number 1 jersey to mannone & let fabianski & sczesney be the 2nd & 3rd choice goalies resp.
If mannone also doesn’t play a/c to perspectives, buy buffon or frey in january

He only had the number 1 because that is his number for the Reserves.

i think Wenger should give Mannone a chance. I mean, when he did give him the chance last year when both Fabianski and Almunia were injured, he didn’t disappoint did he? and the second should be sczneny or whatever his name is (too difficult to remember). both fabianski and almunia should be ball boys. or cleaning service.

MADNESS! we are arsenal fc, one of the best teams in the world! and we are settling for deciding what keeper wears the number 1 jersey based on the almunia,manonne, flapianski and Sczcesny. IF we’re to progress we need a world class keeper! these keepers are backup keepers..who should only play 10-15 games a season! buy hart,given,handanovic,stekenburg or akinfeev! (and manonne made loads of mistakes when he covered!)
