Wenger’s interest in Lucho Gonzalez – Relief that it didn’t materialise!
Earlier this week, Wenger admitted interest in Marseille’s midfielder Lucho Gonzalez: “Lucho was a player I liked… They didn’t want to give him out on loan. We didn’t go as far as discussing a permanent move.”
However, some might be relieved that the move didn’t materialise. The Argentine was mediocre last night against the Arsenal, and was even booed by his own fans before being substituted. It wasn’t a horrendous performance – he contributed the occasional decent pass and touch – but the fact that Marseille spent 19 million Euros on the player suggests that he is noticeably overrated.
Despite being described by some French journalists in particular as among the most talented midfielders in Ligue 1, he wouldn’t get in an Arsenal line-up (at least not from his form witnessed at his time at the Velodrome). It is perhaps reassuring that Wilshere, Arteta, Rosicky and even arguably the criticised Ramsey would be preferred to 30 year-old Gonzalez on his recent form.
If Wenger was after a creative midfielder, Gonzalez surely isn’t it. The South American hasn’t yet got any assists this season and despite having scored 2 goals so far this campaign, only a quarter of his shots are on target. Arteta has scored two goals but it only took him nine shots to do so whilst Gonzalez needed twenty-four. This points to a player that is far too eager to score and wouldn’t suit the calm and composed Arsenal style that was satisfyingly witnessed last night.
Some Gooners might not be entirely convinced by Arteta – with his occasionally static style frustrating fans and teammates alike (Van Persie in particular) – but he looked far more composed than his Argentinean counterpart in the Marseille midfield. If our Spaniard does continue to improve as he is now – albeit slowly – the proof that Lucho Gonzalez would’ve been surplus to requirements would be blatant.
The fact that a seemingly talented player can be dismissed as inadequate for the Arsenal line-up can only be taken as a huge positive.

On last nights showing the only Marseilles player worth having was Valbuena. Although the defender encoulu looked good too. No wonder they were happy to sell Gonzalez I’d rather have benayoun.
