Who is the Arsenal target Benedikt Howedes?
There have been numerous rumours lately (including the Daily Mail this morning) linking Arsenal with the Shalke centre-back Benedikt Howedes, but how many people have actually heard of this young German before?
Well he is 22 years old, and was languishing in the reserves at Schalke until 2008, but he quickly established himself once he was given a chance in the senior side and has now over 60 Bundesliga appearances to his name.
He is very big (6ft 2″) and has gained in strength over the last couple of seasons, and is said to be very calm under pressure for his age. Like Wenger’s summer signing Laurent Koscielny, he is quite inexperienced, but is very likely to gain a chance in the German national side in the near future.
Although widely recognised as a defender, he can also move into midfield if necessary, and has scored 8 goals in the last two years despite being defensive minded. It is this versatility (as well as his age) which will especially appeal to Arsene Wenger.
He currently has a contract until 2014 with Schalke, but they are struggling both on and off the field lately, so an 8 million euro bid for Howedes would probably be accepted by the club.
Personally I would think he would be a much more sensible choice than Per Mertsacker…….

If he’s 6’2, then i tink a look should be geared towards his direction. An additional defensive player would do us a lot of good. I was hell scared wen we had only two CB in SQ18 and JD in our last few matches b4 LK came back if any of them picked up injury. We need defensive stability just as i believe we have enough talent in the midfield. A buy it would be considering he has plenty of years ahead of him.

Wenger really needs to splash some cash on the defence, no names will not bring trophies. although he has brought vermaelen to London who is solid, there is something missing that world class defenders possess. He really needs to take his finger out of his backside and stop being a scrooge

I think the Wenger should just sign Jan Vertoghen that guy is a monster and he can play alongside TV5 he would be a great addition. I have nothing against the other three but Johan is too slow and LK needs more time to adapt making silly mistakes here n there. As for Squillaci goes he partners well with TV5 but he is 30 and won’t be at the top level we need him for much longer…… Just saying

If he can also play in midfield he can add much needed cover for song and can also take djourou’s spot in defence…this is just the kind of player we need…

Wenger should sign the player who is going to stay with us for the long haul & not just short term ! How old is Mertesacker?… Think long term…next seasons transfer season will see some players have to leave and some new ones come in…WE must think long term and not short term… What is best long term for Arsenal?

I think Arsene wants 2 solve our defensive problem with a centre back from the bundislga.It started with Neven Subotic of Dortmund,then Sedar Tasci of Stuttgart,then Per Metasacker of Bremen and now Benedikt Howedes of Schalke.They all are pretty good defenders but i prefer Metasacker.

Never seen this kid, but if hes good enough i’ll have no complaints at all. Personally, I like Mertesacker but I doubt he’ll fit in to the Arsenal system, we play with a high back line and Mertesacker is a pretty slow player. I think Vertonghen would be the perfect signing for us though.

Mertesacker is a 6’6 monster who is confident on the ball and has significant experience at both the club level and for the German national side. Not only that, but he is only 26! How could this unknown kid from Schalke possibly be a better option than Per?

Who would b better, wit our system wer d back four play a very high line, a sluggish giant monster or an agile slightly smaller monster. I have nothing against per mertasacker n he is world class but he won’t fit into our system.

howedes will be good player to replace squacilli,,in 2 years..he is better then djouru…at the moment..but all upon wenger.we trust u but we want to see new face in jan…
