Why are Arsenal extending Djourou’s contract?
We have turned a corner to a certain extent in terms of defending. With the likes of Vermaelan, Koscielny, Mertesacker filling the heart of our defence we have added a certain solidarity to our defending. I’m not saying it’s been completely fixed, it hasn’t, however, I for one feel like we can finally hold onto a lead on most cases and I definitely feel better with the likes of Vermaelan finally back in the team and even Koscielny benefiting from the extra competition.
I am perturbed by the fact that we have extended Djourou’s contract. He used to be decent last year, he was nothing more. This year, however he has been tragic wherever we have played him. He just doesn’t know how to defend. I remember the 8-2 thrashing at United, Djourou was definitely an attributing factor as he forced a young inexperienced Carl Jenkinson to lunge for a tackle which ultimately cost him a red card. Even when Wenger has given him a chance as a RB, he has completely scuffed it.
I understand it isn’t his natural position but that is no excuse when the likes of Coquelin ( a midfielder) does a significantly better job than you and he has only just been promoted to the first team. Hell, we even had to use an inexperienced, 18 year old reserve midfielder in Yennaris to cover for the flailing antics of Djourou against Nani. He was getting absolutely skinned. You know something has gone wrong when your manager is that unconfident in you.
I wish Wenger would not continually offer contracts to mediocre players who hold the team back. He was decent beforehand but he has fallen to disgraceful over the last few months and I can’t stand watching the guy hopelessly defend.

he did well (better) last season, i dont know what has become of him this season…… he is just a shadow of his last season

The reason must be because he would be worth more when selling when he has years of his contract left OR they feel that they should keep him because it would be wasting money to get a replacement defender OR they are keeping him because of UEFA’s home-grown rules
If not one of those reasons, I dont know why they would extend his contract

Looking around the league its fair to say that Djourou is not a bad 4th choice CB.
United have Evans/Jones
Chelsea have Luiz/Ivanovic
Liverpool have Coates
Man city have Savic
Amongst these Djourou is not a bad thing. All of these defenders are not great but they do their job when they are needed.
You cannot have 4 worldclass defenders and make all of them happy. At defence there must be solidity and confidence. That is not developed by rotating your cb’s every game to make them all happy. Look at Barca, they play Puyol and Pique every match they don’t have 4 world class cb’s. They rotate infrequently to provide a rest with average Cb’s.
We have 3 very competent CB’s. Out of the Cb’s I listed Djourou is better than Savic, Coates, and Evans. If Luiz didn’t score so frequently I would say he’s better than him also. That leaves Jones and Ivanovic, well Jones has been very poor recently and Ivanovic is by no means world class.

surely we can get better players than djourou, if you think giving him a new contract increases his value, who would buy him? wouldnt his wages be better spent elsewhere?

Of course we can find a better defender than Djourou…..will he be willing to ride the bench….or worse (cause we only have one defender on the bench and if Song is playing and Coq is on the bench that might not even be necessary.) The answer is obviously NO….but maybe not so obvious to some.

OK hes not the best defender we have, but hes a good back up and wants to play and stay with Arsenal. He was poor in the match he played RB but before played some really good matches and was good going forward! I think hes well worth keeping as a back up,as he is happy to fight for his place!

We are extending his contract because he is, in my opinion, a very capable backup to the centre backs we have. You cannot criticise him and write him off as a bad defender because of mistakes he has made, most of which coming when he has been played out of position as RB.
He has also said he loves the club and enjoys playing for us, commitment some players at this club have never shown in recent years.
Also, who played when we were in a defensive injury crisis? He’s not the perfect CB but he’s incredibly capable as a CB and I’m happy he’s extended his contract.

Get him off “Arsenal Insider” news and put him on the practice pitch to learn how to defend. The guy is a clown, and looks like he can’t handle pressure. I guess it doesn’t help as well when the fans audibly respond everytime he touches the ball.

This article is S***!!!! we will never find perfect 23. We may still require his service. Also i wonder how Terry will perform if he plays as a RB. IMO, Yennaris could be better than Terry. and as for 2-8, the whole team should be responsible for that, not Djourou alone.

All the players you mentioned shit all over Djourou except Savic and Evans who are equally incompetent. I actually think that Vermaelen and Koscielny is not a strong enough first choice pairing. They are both quick and good on the ball but I do not think Koscielny has the positional awareness neccessary at this time nor the physical strength, and would have him as third choice, Mertesacker 4th choice and I think we need someone of Vermaelen’s calibre in there with him. I haven’t seen enough of Miquel or Bartley but they are certainly not there now. We should have got Djourou off the wage bill and brought in a top quality centre back because the amount of goals we concede is a joke.

People who understand and are logical realize he’s not a bad 5th choice defender, and there is the home-grown policy. People who are immature and uneducated (never taken an economics class) want to have a world class player like vertonghen sit on the bench. Djourou is not very good when he tries to play full-back, I know that just like everyone else, but he is welcome to hang about so Miguel and Bartley can work themselves into the team. Especially Miguel, world class player in the making right there.

The guy had been playing for many seasons but going backward. I don’t blame the player for this, but the manager. Wenger knows that he is not at first team level and he plays him game after game at a devastating price to the team. That was total arrogance, Djourou needs to go needs to go to a lower league, where he could be useful and grow at his pace. Imagine, if Wenger has the gut to bring in Samba to Arsenal, can you imagine how solid our backline could get? But I don’t foresee that knowing Wenger, he likes to live on the edge, so he remains on the news all the time. A team at Arsenals caliber should not consider less than average players in their first squad.

l hear people say he played better last year but i think the team played better and covered his mistakes.January last year we went 5-6 games with clean sheets then injurys came and showed this crap for what he is.NO GOOD.

Djouro is not the best right backbut he has done well at center back particulalry last season.
As a stand in he isn’t a bad player he is also counted as a home grown player and doesn’t have high wages.

Wenger is quite happy to have players with no ambition, as it means he doesnt get challenged to his tactics and formations. They are easier to handle, dont spout off to the press and everyday is like groundhog day. Remember Cesc saying that Wenger doesn’t man manage. None of the players know him, so the club isn’t close knit. The players that have true ambition don’t hang around once in their prime.

I hope he doesn’t read all of this nonsense, it’d shake his confidence something shocking which wouldn’t be too high after been played completely out of position recently. He’s a decent enough fourth choice. He is capable of doing a job, and as Travis Bickle pointed out earlier, he’s better than the majority of the other top club’s third/fourth choices. The only club I can think of with better depth at centre back is Real. Leave the bloke alone and get behind him. He’s still relatively inexperienced because he was ravaged with injury early on in his career.

it’s totally understandable, as we can not have 4 top class CBs (as mentioned by many), and we need to have 8 home grown players in the squad. i reckon he is alright for a 4th choice CB. if it wasn’t for the Home Grown restriction, I’m sure Wenger would’ve offloaded him ages ago.

Whenever djorou makes arsenal’s lineup i always fall sick, reasons that must cause two or three erros that will lead to arsenal defeat. Wenger should be looking for quality defenders, not people like Juan djourou,.

Terrible decision. Kyle Bartley will improve and should take the role of 5th choice CB with Miquel as 4th choice. Djourou should be sold because he’s error prone and ineffective. Why concentrate on youth if you’re not even willing to give them a chance ahead of someone like Djourou. Now that Miquel and Bartley are approaching 21 it’s time to play themand get rid of those who have already matured and aren’t good enough. They might be no better but it’s better to give them a chance than waste time continuing to play Djourou.

@Travis Bickle – Jones, Evans, Luis and Ivanovic are MUCH better than Djourou. It is as plain as the nose on my face, which is quite big.
