Why Arsenal need a center-back – Who would YOU buy?
It is astoundingly clear that Arsene Wenger needs to splash out on a center-back. The overall quality of players we have there is not good enough firstly – Squillaci is a poor mans Silvestre, Koscielny has very good technique and will develop into a good defender but at the moment he is error prone and erratic.
The worrying thing is that Thomas Vermaelen’s achillies injury is not going away. The club still don’t know what the problem is and Arsene has admitted as much – he started running again in training and it started to cause him pain again – It is becoming very serious indeed.
Whilst Johann Djourou has been very impressive of late he is still only coming back from a long lay-off himself and at some point he is bound to pick up some sort of niggle because of the sheer amount of football he is being asked to play and with Vermaelen injured, Squillaci with a pulled hamstring and Djourou, that would leave us with Koscielny and either a youth player or Alex Song in defence. Not the sort of scenario you really want to see.
I can’t see Arsenal moving for Gary Cahill because in the summer Arsene spent £10 million on Koscielny and all that would do is push him down the pecking order, thus, wasting the money he spent in the summer. Cahill would cost the best part of £15 million – though you would be buying class.

Per Mertesaker ,big,strong,100% concentration,determination,about 26 year old ,he’s just perfect … and wants to go for a big club … the fans deserve this ,after all the jokes arsene did on us …he’s talking about our philosophy and he brings squilaci for no reason but because he was a cheap buy … i’m not spending a pound anymore to go the emirates until he brings some decent players ,he’s not gonna get his as fat on my money anymore.

aaron gun- the admin posted the question to the readers of this site to see who they prefer. Ofcourse none of us are telling Arsene how to manage but we are allowed an opinion after all we do pay the dearest ticket prices in the league.
Anyway in my opinion I would like to see a bit of English steel added to the team. Cahill in at CB and Richards at RB and cover at CB.
Also Mexes is avaliable on the free!! Cant go too far wrong!!

I am not totaly convinced by Mertasacker. I would like to see someone with premiere league experience.
I think that Agger or Samba would be a good buy at around 10 million. But if we wanted to splash more cash for more of a 1st choice centre back I would say Cahill or Jagielka would be the best options.

Mexes would be a good buy as well. I just don’t want another french defender I guess. He is also unproven in the premiere league but would be a good squad player.
I think Richards would be a great buy. Considering he would be cover for sagna as well. But highly doubt Man City would see to us being their direct rival.

Roma – P.Mexes – French International, experienced defender & out of contract. Price?
PSG – M.Sahko – he’s left footed and this is the only problem because Verm is too. Price?
p.Jagielka – But wont be cheap and depends on who else is available for the same amount.
But lets be real people – Sol Campbell will come back and someone will be bought in the summer.

I hear alot of talk about Cahill but I’m honestly not sure about the hype as I’ve never really watched him, or I should say that he never really stood out when I have seen Bolton play. The only 2 defenders that I’ve seen lately that I feel would not only add to our defence but strengthen it, are Chris Samba and Per Mertesacker. If Samba can play as good as he does in a Blackburn squad, just imagine what he could do at Arsenal with world class players around him. Also, he wants to leave his team and join us, and he would be within our price range. (8-10 million) Mertesacker is simply class! Anybody who watched last summer’s World Cup knows what a rock he was for the German national squad.

We should just take Gabtiel Milito on loan from Barça until the end of the season by next season we will have vermaelen back and both djouro and koscielny will become world class by then and we will also have the youth captain available from what I hear he is pretty good….

MAMADOU SAKHO – SAKHO!!!!!! The most obvious and underatted choice. Big and strong like Samba, fast and agile, FRENCH keeping with Wengers back 4 national team development. Did anyone wathc him play in the emirates Cup of 2009. He is is young but experienced and could be a long term quality investment. He could be available for 10/15 million and Wenger would tempt him. He was magnificent when England played France. He is a propper centrehalf and I want him at Arsenal and been screaming for years! SAKHO – WAGNER please by Sakho.
Bore of Cahill, Vertonhan, Mertsaker, Samba etc…. Sakho is a great player. SAKHO is the best centre back on the planet for his age group! Nordveit is gone, Verm is injured, squillaci is a blessing in deisguise. I hope Denilson get injured and glad Diaby is injured so he cannot play s**t on the pitch

To be honest, the league this year has been mad, and I would like to get a defender who knows this league, I don’t really know who we can or can’t get but the man that spring to mind is hangeland I’m laughing sayin this cause I don’t rate him that highly but he does a good job for fulham and could possibly do an even better job for us, plus he’s the guy that wenger wanted before all the talk of samba, cahill jalgielka an the rest.

madjid bouguerra from glasgow,put rooney in his pocket last WC.big strong quick feet burst a lot with the ball from the back and he does it very well.and wouldnt cost much.plus with all the experience he got he won prety much everything to be won in scotland in his last 3 seasons.

Vertonghen and Sahko. Get rid of the entire medical team and poach the very best of the best in their fields from all over the world. Australia is a world leader in sport’s medicine. Vermaelen is overrated. I wasn’t overly impressed with him last season, apart from his goals. He tended to lose his mind a bit in the big games. Djourou is better.

i think he’ll probably go for someone around the age of squillaci that’s under 5 million just for a temporary fix and provide experience, ironically that was the same case with squillaci. haha.
because obviously wenger wants to develop djourou and koscielny. you can’t have 4 first choice central defenders in one team, that being vermaelen, djourou, koscielny, and some big money more than 10 million pounds signing?
you guys know any player that fits the bill? if you think of it that way, sol campbell isn’t quite a bad signing after all? or is it just a bad joke. haha

It has to be a left-sidedcenter back as we have Squillaci, Djourou and Koscielny who all prefere to play on the right and also most left sided center backs can play left back as well! My choices in order would be, Vertonghen, Agger, Sakho! All in the £10m price range and all can cover at left back. If we go for Vertonghen i think it will make the capture of Hazard easier as he is Belgium along with Vermealen and that gives Hazard 3 national team mates at the club!

wenger should have sign cahill last summer he would cost 12m maximum…now 20m…this is the price for being delay.at the moment sama cost 6 m and if wenger do not sign him he will surly cost 10m after 4 months.

Richard Dunne anyone ? he was in the premier league best 11 last year, after his move to Aston Villa from citeh, ‘ll definitely fulfill our need for an ‘PREMIER LEAGUE’ experience player as we are fighting for title and can’t give much time for a bundesliga player to adjust. i am not sure about how much he would cost but can definitely be the guy we are lacking to protect keeper.

Tommy vermalen has had a setback as confirmed by Wenger. They are consulting specialists from around the world according to his interview, so sounds worrying. He did say that he is now most certainly in the market for a new centre half. Good and bad news i suppose

We obviously need another cb, but we won’t get cahill or samba simply beacause when TM finally recovers we won’t have a place for them. I think we should get a really expirienced cb but who is still playing at a high level, not a Sol but a Hangeland or a Friedrich. Maybe AW shouldn’t have left Nordveit to leave, he was quiet promising and was perfect for this situation.

I think Jan Vertonghen could do the trick! Like Vermaelen has a demon shot on him, can take a free kick with his rocket of a foot( 5 goals in 17 games so far this season), is strong and not afraid to go in for a challenge, very comfortable on the ball and sometimes plays DM for Ajax so could come in for Song if he picks up a knock? Also like Vermaelen he’s Belgian and the two together at Ajax so they should know each other well, only thing is their both left footed and i cant see two lefties at the back for us, still i think he’d be a great investment for the club!

I just hope he gets someone who is at least 6’2″ and proven at the highest level. Only problem is that could mean splashing the cash and we all know how much he hates to do that. Samba seems like the best option for me as he could go for under 10 million.

I would either buy Vertonghen or Samba. Per Mertesacker would be my first choice, but from the looks of it he is determined to see his contract through with Bremen and will not be moving anywhere anytime soon. If Hangeland or Cahill move, it would be to Chelsea not Arsenal. I know AW admires both, but during the January transfer window, the prices are inflated and he will not lavishly spend on CB just for another 6 months. I would love to see Albiol in a Arsenal shirt as he is a backup/fringe player for Madrid, but I’m afraid he would cost to much for AW. Agger would be a joke. If he moved, it would be for a club outside the premier league. But knowing our AW, it wouldn’t surprise me if he bought some low profile defender from France.

we need to shake wenger very hard, over the summer and this winter we’ve got rid of more defenders than we brought, we got rid of senderos and got koscielny, got rid of old gallas, and brought in old squillaci, now the fact that we didnt strengthen our defence in the summer is coming back to haunt us when were so close to the top again! I cant see us getting cahill as he will cost too much, same as jagielka, i would like to see samba as reports say he wants to leave blackburn and who wouldnt want to join the gooners he also might be fairly cheap but we all know he’ll end up signing some kid with no premier league or top flight experience, come on Arsenal!!!
