Why would Arsenal bid for the over-rated Hulk?
Porto’s Brazilian beast Hulk has been targeted by Wenger as a new powerhouse up front. Now called up into his country’s full squad, the striker has been in decent form yet again this season with 3 goals from 6 games already. However, is the Portuguese league big enough to prove that he is good enough for the Premiership?
There is no doubt that he can be a real handful, scoring 36 goals in 53 games last season alone as well as bagging an impressive 21 assists. However, since his arrival at the club in 2008, Porto haven’t progressed further than the last 16 of the Champions League and so it is debatable whether Hulk has faced stern opposition on a regular-enough basis to prove that he really is a top player.
Many Brazilians aren’t fond of him and it’s sometimes easy to see why. He does have excellent technique but it seems that he doesn’t use it to the best of his ability at all. Instead, shots from 30-35 yards out that fly harmlessly over the bar have become part of the package with Hulk, and this unpredictability probably explains his minimal national team appearances.
His teammate Falcao, on the other hand, looks a far classier act and it seems a shame that Arsenal didn’t try to bring him to the Emirates before his move to Athletico Madrid earlier this year.
Hulk’s release clause in his contract suggests that £87 million would be needed to prise the striker away from Portugal but, with several big names leaving the club every season (such as Falcao, Lucho Gonzalez, Raul Meireles, Lisandro Lopez etc) it looks unlikely that they would hold onto Hulk either.
It might be a positive that Wenger is looking at more experienced and proven players, but would one with an apparent ego and a career only in lesser divisions be enough?

I wont take another tree even if it’s a free coniferous tree post Christmas as a gift from Porto FC in January … even though i respect his attributes but he ain’t someone who we need for our type of play…i would love another chelsea reject in Drogba … experienced…EPL… and a goal poacher… ch33rs!! longlive Gunners…

Yeah it’s a shame Arsenal didn’t get Falcao – and he was affordable!
Wengie probably didn’t bid for him because RVP will be very unhappy if benched.
Since Wenger prefers a lone striker upfront, he wouldn’t buy a quality competition for RVP which will only hasten RVP’s exit from the club.
So far RVP’s hamstring stay strong, all other strikers remain on the bench.

Get real…..can’t buy Mata worth 30 million leave alone thinking of buying Hulk ! Look for quality players in England first. Want only those players at the club who want to play for the crest on our chest ! Not those players who pass comments reguarly on their future !!! I agree that Wenger has been stubborn….which has off-late given burst to my BP level ! Forget defence for the moment,change the formation and provide support to RVP. The board need to understand that they heading for a big fall in the Div’s unless they start letting Wenger have his way. Also Mr Arsenal (David Dein) needs to come back, that is where we are failing!!!! one man can not do every job, and that is what Wenger is doing! He loves our club!!

yeah… he’s good, talented player, everyone knows that, but his price is too high, if i may confess.
why don’t wenger price him very well in order to booster our up-front / striker and could be a combination with RVP as well.
that could make RVP stay longer in arsenal.
in fact with this combination i think arsenal will win a lot this season i bet all fan, even the BOARD as well.
wenger was so careless he lose FALCAO and now we’re short of strikers now, because we can’t count on CHAMARK for now so sluggish and depends on his head, that’s not a player if i may say something.
even if wenger didn’t buy HULK then i think he should go for experience strikers as well, there are a lot of striker out there today pleading, looking for a way to join arsenal fc.

Hulk is not overrated. Watch him against man u when he was about 21 years old,he tormented evra both home and away. And he’s even much more improved now. As for brazil,i guess the coaches has their preference because they have a pool of stars. Imagine dunga slotting dani alves into midfield against netherland at the world cup and they lost. He wanted to play both maicon and alves while real midfielders like nilmar rot on the bench. Result? They crash out of the world cup and he got sacked. The new coach prefers ramires! Believe me if i am brazil’s coach today i will play gustavo of bayern munich before ramires and douglas costa instead of ganso. But its he’s choice anyway. PLEASE HULK IS NOT OVERATED! Somehow we’re forgetting the players who came from Superliga and thrived in the EPL? Carvalho, Deco, CRonaldo, Miereles to name a few. Additionally Hulk has CL experience. Porto might not have hit the same heights as they did under Mourinho but that’s mostly down to the fact that they know they are a feeder club. They accept that as a sustainable business model – buy low, sell high.
Hulk showed that with a top class partner i.e. Falcao, he can bag goals.
The 87M is simply a buyout clause, and most buyout clauses are meant as a start to negotiation not his absolute price. The buyout clause exists simply to maximize the amount of money Porto can get for him. If a club came in with 30-40M they might consider it. The 87M is subject to negotiation and is just a safety loop for the club. If the player wants to go then Porto can negotiate with the interested party and it won’t be for 87M.

Why not? That’s just a scare off price by Porto. We could have him cheaper than that. Regardless of all of the talk of tactics and trading. When was the last time you saw an Arsenal game and really thought were were scary? We’ve lost too many of those killer players and those that are left are surrounded by (although technically great) student players. Yes buy some defenders that opposition strikers will really have to think twice about. Buy another creative midfielder, we do need one, but please buy a striker to help the amazing van p that the opposition might just be a little intimated by. Someone who might just give a fan the shiver that something magic could happen at any time.

We should focus on Gotze, Hazard, J. Rodriguez and C. Eriksen. If we can get one or two of them at fair prices, then we can compete with anybody.
As a colombian i don’t think falcao was right for arsenal and i don’t think he is cost the kind of money AM paid for him. don’t get me wrong, i’m sure he is an outstanding striker, but with the current market and Porto high price tag policies, he was sold for the same price as aguero.

There’s always this arrogance about the English league. Yes there were more EPL players at the last world cup than any other league but we’re talking 16% which diminished to 10% by the quarter final stage and lagged behind Italy, Germany and Spain at that point. Now the two best teams in the world are probably Spanish. Stop being so narrow-minded and realise that just because a player plays outside England that doesn’t mean he’s not good enough for our league. This is the same delusional thinking that makes us so disappointed when England don’t win. The winner of the European Championships in 2012 will be Spain, Germany or Netherlands and most of the players in those teams won’t be playing in England.

Alex i happen to know that the people running this club are doing everything in their power to ensure that Usmanov does not get shares. I just spoke to someone who sold their shares to Kroenke and they said “sell my shares to the Russian ? they would’ve taken away my season ticket”. I don’t know the reasons behind this.

Instead of him we have 2 brilliant options in front of us-Drogba and tevez. Whatever anyone says they are proven quality and wenger can get the best out of them even now.
