Why would Real Madrid want Gael Clichy?
There are numerous Arsenal rumours lately, but most of them seem to concern players leaving the Emirates rather than arriving!
The latest, which admittedly has been doing the rounds for some time, says that Jose Mourinho wants the French defender to move to Real Madrid. This puzzles me….
No-one can say that Mourinho is not an expert in sizing up players and their qualities, so there is no doubt that if this was true he would have had Clichy scouted and investigated many many times, and I’m wodering if they have seen any of his games this season?
Clichy is one of the few remaining players from Arsenal’s invincibles era, having been considered as backup to Ashley Cole, but lately he has been far convincing according to many fans on this blog and pundits alike. In fact Martin Keown said just this week “Clichy is going backwards. We all have a bad time at some point maybe he needs to have some time out to look from the outside. It sometimes helps.”
So for the papers to suggest that Mourinho is willing to offer Karim Benzema to Arsenal in exchange for Clichy would seem like pure madness from the Portugese coach….
Am I wrong?

I’d take it. Not only does it mean we get an amazing player but if Wenger decides,which he probably will, to sell him then we could get enough moneyfor new more expensive players. Hopefully

Makenzie: You must have been watching another game or you are not a genuine Arsenal fan. Clichy not closing down Nani quick enough (but not rashly) led to the lucky opening goal. I do not want him to leave but should be left on the benches when Gibb is fully fit. He has gone backwards in my estimation and I sure am that most gooner fans agree with me

He had an okay match against Nani. A few times he tackled well. On others, for instance the goal, he kept backing of and off. His distribution on the night was woeful. Any time he won the ball he invariably passed it to a Utd player.
Keown is right, was a good one, now going backwards. If he wants I will drive him to Madrid myself.

Apart from his crosses, clichy is arguably one of the best left-backs in the world. Mourinho will work on his crosses and u’ll see a different clichy

i dont think most arsenal fans realize that the reason clichy struggled against nani was because he didn’t get any help from arshavin defensively. at most times he was outnumbered on the wing 2 to 1.
on the other hand look at manu, their wingers covered their fullbacks

Oh yes this would be a great swap Clichy is rubbish and keeps losing us big games… Its twice in two games against Man U hes let Nani get the better of him and iver score or assist. Do the swap and put Eboue at LB please WENGER…

It is true that human beings are, and will ever be insatiable and we only appreciate what we gain now and never consider others feelings. This Clichy of a player that you are calling for his head now was the only player in 2008/2009 campaign that played all matches all through all competition until a crack was discovered in his lumbar the following season that forced him to take some rest. These players are human, they are not machine and you should not expect them to deliver optimally all the time. There will always be a time of recess like it or take it. And most people complaining here may not be able to run just 100 meters or just complete a round trip on a field. And if they do will not be able to walk properly for another one week, but they want these players that get kicked, get injured along the line to deliver optimally every three three days they play a match.
I dont think some so called Arsenal fans truly follow the club, they only pick some junk dailies and take their comments for what they say about the club, the manager and the players. Im sure if Arsenal parades the crop of players in Man City they wont tell Wenger buy this buy that but is Mna city better than Arsenal. They are not a good manager of their life and their home but they will come out and say Wenger is not a good manager. Easier said than done, you better get a grip. Arsenal is the greatest.

It is sad to note that we have some people that call themselves Arsenal supporters but all they do is to keep criticising players without providing alternatives. Clichy played well against. Yes he’s got the habit of allowing midfielders to come onto him rather than attacking them but that is one of the things that the defender coach should work on and also some of his crosses. It is amazing when people start comparing Clichy with Gibbs. Yes Gibbs is a good prospect but yet not at the level of Clichy. We need to feature Gibbs in some of the top 5 team matches in the premiership then at that point we can conclude if is worth selling Clichy to give Gibbs a chance.

Clichy isn’t a defender, he isn’t really a football player at all. He is just fast and has a high work rate. So if a Benzema deal for Clichy + Cash is in place I would take it, but we have no reliable replacement for Clichy at LB. Gibbs is looking like the next RVP with all of these injuries.
I doubt these rumors are true. Marcelo has been amazing for Real Madrid and he has looked far more impressive this season than Clichy has.

I’d take that offer everyday of the week, Gibbs needs to start playing first team football, Clichy isn’t playing particularly brilliantly and Benzema is a class striker.

I think Clichy had a good game against united. About this story I would love this to happen.. Though im not sure if Gibbs is ready every week but if Clichy did go we would need to get an experienced player to help Gibbs learn and so he can be our first choice in three years.
On whether Madrid would wont him or not.. I believe they would. Spainish football isnt as physical as english and apart from when your playing Barca you do get a bit of time on the ball and that would Clichy. I dont want him to leave but id really love Benzema in the Arsenal number 9 shirt!!

Clichy for Benzema, Bendtner for Mertesacker and Vela for Vertonghen – Job done title coming to the Emirates.
In the summer replace Eboue with Van der Weil and Cesc with Mascherano and with the cash over get Eden Hazard in to push Arshavin to the bench.

NION has got it spot on……..You cannot lay the blame on Clichy, Nani is a good winger and a fullback always needs support, the Blame lies infront of Clichy. Clichy needs to work on his crossing though. The issue is the lazy Russian who sparks for only 5-10 mins a game. He contributes amazing assists and has a brilliant football brain but his overall contribution is terrible.
If you had a player like Park infront of Clichy you would not be isolating Clichy for criticism.
