Will – Arsenal need to sign…….. David Dein!
Hey Guys, I am big fan of Just Arsenal News, and have had season ticket for past seven years. I just thought that I’d put forward an argument for Arsene Wenger and why David Dein could be the answer to our problems.
I was walking back from the Arsenal vs Liverpool game. I’d just watched a very depleted Arsenal get beaten 2-0 by a side that had invested 100 million pounds in the previous two transfer windows. It was the clearest image I’ve seen of two teams going in opposite directions. Both aiming for a Champions League spot, however it was the one from Merseyside that seemed to be heading for the European promise land.
My mate asked me in the rain outside the Emirates after the game, ‘Who do you think we should sign tomorow then?’. Of all the experienced defenders, combative midfielders and star strikers we’ve been linked to over this long and tiresome transfer window there was only one name I could think of; David Dein. There are a number of reasons for this.
Number 1; Dein was the kingpin at Arsenal. He commanded the respect of all the board members (despite their differences), the players, the fans and above all Arsene Wenger. If Arsene Wenger wanted something, Dein would pull out all the stops to get it for him. On the other hand, Dein would also, to an extent keep, Arsene in line. He would make sure that Arsene took care of the footballing side of the club whilst he focused on the business and transfer side of things. However, when he left in 2007, all those responsibilities seemed to have landed on Arsene’s shoulders and his authority and power have slowly started to erode as he just couldn’t cope. He could no longer just concentrate on making a team play well, he had to build it all by himself. Before 2007, both he and Dein were responsible for building teams and the results speak for themselves.
Number 2; From watching his interview on BBC sport a couple of days ago it appears to me that David Dein seems to still have a rich understanding of what is going on inside the club and that he has a stable working relationship with Stan Kroenke but maintains a close personal friendship with Arsene Wenger. This, combined with his strong character, would mean that if he was bought in, he would be the perfect man to stable the red and white ship. As a whole, from the interview you get a very distinct impression that Dein knows exactly how to fix the club.
Finally, in defence of the La Professeur himself. I can understand the calls for his head and him to walk the plank at Arsenal. But, Dein bought up a very good point. Dein, who probably knows more about Arsenal Football Club and Arsene Wenger than anybody else alive. He asked the question, who do you replace him with? And I’ve asked a couple of fellow Gooners this same question. Every time there is a long pause before a couple of ‘I suppose….. ummmms……wells…………………’. And thats the point. There really is nobody. People say Owen Coyle? A man who’s only managed two seasons in the top flight and not yet acheived a top six finish? Pep Guardiola? As likely as a pig flying. Both he and his enemy Mourinho have their eyes fixed on Sir Alex Ferguson’s current office.
Like Dein said, keep the faith. Under Arsene we have good times, and we’ve had even better times. Yes Arsene got us into this mess, but with a couple of quality signings and a strong character in that boardroom, he may get us out of it.

I read two paragraph and stopped reading. Stop this negativity please. We were not playing our best team against liverpool, yet they can only beat us when we were down to 10 men. Their pricey players can do nothing against our so called inexperienced, cheap, non-world class young players. Don’t blame wenger over this depleted arsenal team at the moment, blame the FA, the ref, dan Joey “the tug” Barton.

Dein would indeed stop the faltering stride o AFC and would be a check and balance for both arsene and the board (with Theo frugality that is.) something must be done. If the cash is not splashed in the coming week I will go f****** bananas. It is evident that our young teenagers are not ready for a starting position yet and that not a negative point, they’re 19 for Christ’s sake! Buy your gooners some players who equal our quality in support on the pitch. A CB, top midfielder for the cesc role, and a LB (sorry to say but Gibbs is high quality but he just isn’t holding up.) a supporting striker might not be a bad idea either but that’s borderline dreaming with the current board

Good Article! Arsenal fans sometimes forget how good our fortunes are, In the last decade or even two decades ago we have been very consistent in being a top club. and I would say the only club more successful during this period is only Man U. Bolton, Spurs, Everton, West Ham, aston Villa, etc.. and only Chelsea recently, do not even come close to what we have achieved. The Club needs our support, the best we could do at present is to show our continued support and give them added confidence!! Here’s to a wonderfull 2011 – 2012 campaign, I wish Arsenal all the best.

Nice piece, definitely having David Dean brought back would ease a lot of tension, but the only part i disagree is who replaces wenger,i am not asking Arsene Wenger to be replaced but why do people resist change and go negative about it.Wenger replaces someone dint he.When Guadiola took the reins at barcelona, who knew he would be this successful in 3 seasons.Arsenal Fans say,no man is bigger than the club!does dat make Arsene an exception, the Boss has taken us to different heights,we really appreciate that but he has to be flexible and not be so strong headed and stubborn.I honestly cannot mention a name immediately but the way things are going, wenger wld name his succesor and then fans would start to scream.Give Le boss a target, make him sit up and maybe we fans would have something to smile about.we are a huge club who have a huge fan base and the club makes hge money because of the fans.We are ready to die for the club but all we need in return is respect, respect of our emotions,we do not seek recognition in anyway but AFC should make the fans happy, buy quality players, challenge for the title. There was a time when Manchester United vs Arsenal was a huge game,it isn’t anymore cos we are not rivals anymore, now we tremble when we face bolton and stoke,no disrespect to the clubs but we need to go back to the days when we were the alpha males that needed to be toppled in d pack.Arsene wenger is not indispensable, its that thought that has gotten us dis far down d drain. We would lend him our every support no doubt but no man is bigggger than the club.Wish he could come to Nigeria and see the heartbreak he has caused us all.

This is a great article – spot on.
It is the easiest thing in the world to say sack someone but what next? Suggest someone who is plausable to replace Arsene. Wenger would be out of work for all of 1 day as Man Utd, Chelsea, Madrid, the FA would all try to employ him in some capacity.
There have been mistakes and whilst Arsene has made some I feel he is taking the flak for a poor performance from the board. Remember when Henry left he cited as his reason was Dein leaving!! I think Arsene needs to be able to be left to focus on the team and playing football. There is definately a need for the role that Dein once did as it is either not being performed very well or someone is not doing it. Wenger is performing so many functions he is spreading himself thinly and unable to perform one of them 100%. Bring back Dein. Dein first approached Kroenke and then Usmanov and who are the two largest shareholders…

I think we’re being misguided by the press. The problem with Arsenal is not about Dein not present but the Press who sees nothing good in whatever AW does. AW signs a teenager, the press calls for his head but if Fergi does same it is greeted with enthusiasm. They forget that days of sorrow don’t last forever and one does not get it right all the time, there are moments of despair in every ones career. The league is barely 3wks old, let us sit back and allow AW do what he is being paid to do. Yesterday’s game against Udinese availed me a glimmer of hope after all the negative press. The team for the first time this season showed character which is a sign of better things to come. Watch out for the Great Surprise of the Season!

It seems ironic that arsenals problems began manifesting itself after the departure of David Dein. Here was a man who commanded respect from the players and had a sound working relations with the manager. He foresaw the direction the game was heading and saw the need to bring in a billionaire in Alisher Usmanov to take over the club and rival the likes of Abramovitch. The combination of Dein and the professor was a winning combination, one that needs to be rekindled. Lay off Arsene. If want to blame someone blame the board or us the fans for the departure of Mr.Dein and our current predicaments. Bring back David Dein!
