Will Injuries Cost Arsenal Again?
With Djourou suffering an injury in Saturday’s 4-4 draw with Newcastle I’m starting to wonder if the team’s trophy challenge will once again sputter out as various squad members succumb to injuries.
I sometimes wonder if the amount of injuries that Arsenal suffer is exaggerated in my mind but it’s truly astonishing how fragile or unlucky Arsenal players seem to be. Not a game goes by without someone receiving a knock, tear or breakage.
It could be due to the high tempo passing game that Arsenal play, forcing the opposition to commit more fouls, certainly born out by the amount of penalties the team have been awarded this season.
But Arsène Wenger must have factored this into his overall strategy by now. After all these years he should know that he is going to lose players during the season and that he needs ample cover for all positions. While there are plenty of forwards and attacking midfielders in the squad, the defence seems a bit of an after thought at times.
In a previous article I wrote that Arsène was right not to bring in any more players if there were no more injuries. Well the injuries are arriving thick and fast and if players like Song, Djourou and Vermaelen miss more games then it will be a familiar story for Arsenal fans.

I think Diaby’s reaction contributed only 20 percent to our let-go-memory 4-4 draw on saturday.. Ref 20 percent, Djorou’s injury had a share of 60 percent cos his absence made way 4 a floppy defense with Squillaci not being sharp and present enough!

The most frustrating is the international friendlies that doesnt mean anything. Our players play almost every 3-4 days for the last 2 months. God help us!!!!!!

Two things must be borne in mind, namely,
1. There is a limit to the size of the squad.
2. The type of play that Arsenal employ i.e. close, fast passing will always attract physical contact and thereby fouls and injuries….in an attempt to dispossess and slow things down.

Stop whinning. The fault lies firmly in Wengers hands as he cannot build a team with the resources he has to deliver success. Wenger is an insult to what an Arsenal manager should be!!!

can arsenal make come back like new castle and spurs ………..no way…it good that chelsea n ManU are in poor form..positive manager will take advantage of rivals weakness…but wenger he respect them like anything , he played lone strike with 5 midfield aganist ManU… we lost that game n he made excusse of bad pitch……spurs, chelsea and l’pool building strong squards he is cool and jealous about their spending.faith in young team he have said this team will win…lets see.u are the manager…

we ve seen this collapse many times over the years..one guy on the blogs said weve given away 35 or so games where we were leading only to be pegged back to a draw or a loss.
4-4 may have looked a freak result ..but look at the examples before and it proves there is something woefully lacking with the side and the manager.
Wenger was too stubborn to pay the market price to get a quality centre back that may have saved the 3 points and certainly would have given us a chance of maintaining our challenge on all fronts. Instead he kept his wallet closed and put his faith in squillachi as cover!….what an absolute joke it all is!.
Ironically it would be good if squill got injured (not seriously…hes probably a nice bloke)..so that someone…anyone could take the position…..try bendnter he probably believes he would be the best centre back that ever lived!!
Wenger wont learn..is incapable of seeing the obvious…..he never sees anything on the pitch so why expect him to see this!
Apparently hes touting for a successor!,,,,and he isnt french!!!

Fear of Players wage make AW lost unnecessary points in the PL. players like Rosckiy,Diaby,Ebouye, Denilson may be reduce AW expense. So why don’t AW let all the above players out and replace by teenagers in the squad.

Blaming Wenger for a Dowd is a nonsense. Dowd is employed by the same clowns who built a national stadium at Wembley without a decent pitch and failed to build an academy at Burton to develop coaches. Clowns from top to bottom. A Newcastle will always happen.
The injuries might present the same problems for each club with the 25 man squad ruling. With that 25 man ruling, if you had the 4 best central defenders on the planet, and each were injured, then you would still be in the same position Wenger is in now.
How to utilize his resources. It is a game by game basis. Are the 25 good enough as individual players? Is the football played so well-drilled into them, it doesn’t matter who they bring in from the under-21s, the football will still be played, game by game.

Looks like Djourou will be out for awhile (http://www.setanta.com/ie/Articles/2011/2/07/Nervous-Gunners-to-examine-Djourou-injury/gnid-87784/) and it is about 3 weeks before Vermaleen is back. This means he will miss matches against Wolves, Barca, Stoke, Birmingham and Leyton Orient. He should be back for the Sunderland and Barca (at Camp Nou) matches. The absence of Djourou will be crucial in the matches against physical sides like Stoke and Birmingham.
Either Betdner or Chamack should start those matches to help out at set-pieces.

its not the pace of are passing that gets us the injurys , barca pass at the same pace and all there players played at the world cup and they seem to play more games than are lot.we have been talking about the same injury prone players for years. DJ was getting injurys before he was in the first team and a few others…CLEAN OUT THE DEAD WOOD AND SPEND SOME MONEY ON PROVEN PLAYERS …They don’t have to be world class but proven

I wonder if the injuries come because our players hold the ball too long before passing it, often taking one touch more than necessary. Watch Barca, they usually pass the ball earlier than we do. So does Man U. This early release of the ball increases the tempo, and decreases injuries. I’ll never forget this summer in a pre-season game here in the U.S., Man U vs. Kansas City I think, the microphone of the TV broadcast picked up Alex Ferguson walking over to speak to Nani who was wincing after getting whacked hard in the ankle. I expected to not hear anything or at, but the mic picked up clearly, instead of asking if he was OK as I expected, Ferguson lit into Nani in a nasty tone and matching facial expression of contempt, berating him, clearly saying, “you wouldn’t have been kicked if you hadn’t held the ball so long!” There it was, and by the tone of SAFs voice it didn’t sound like the first time he had told that to one of his players.
