Will Keiran Gibbs ever fulfill his potential for Arsenal and England?

Posted on December 11, 2011 by admin

The 22 year old defender Kieran Gibbs has been at Arsenal since 2004. Trained under the youth coach of Arsenal, Gibbs has been trained well and polished into one of the future talents in the footballing world. Furthermore, the left footed full back is English, which makes things even more exciting and he was hotly tipped to go to the World Cup last year until he gor injured (again!). Looking to be the natural successor of Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy, Gibbs has now established himself to be the future left back of Arsenal.

Being a player equally talented on the offense and defence, Gibbs is known for his formidable crossing ability and pressing defending. Watching him play will really allow you to catch a glimpse of the future of Arsenal.

Of course, every player has their highs and lows. Gibbs is no exception of course. At times, fans get really frustrated with Gibbs’ gameplay. One vivid and bad memory I have of Kieran Gibbs is that he fell down and gave Park Ji Sung a goal in United’s 3-1 victory against us in the Champions league semifinals in 2009. Also Gibbs has been thought by many as being the weak link of the Arsenal backline. Another factor to consider for Kieran Gibbs is that he is also very injury prone. Half the time, he is not available for Arsenal.

The purchase of Andre Santos recently from Fenerbache would really provide some stiff competition for Gibbs and this would be really essential to the development of him as a left back as Gibbs now will strive harder in order to be a first team regular at Arsenal. Furthermore to be an England international, the competition is Leighton Baines and Gibbs would really have to pull up his socks to catch the eye of Fabio Capello.

Hopefully Gibbs can fulfill his potential at Arsenal and be one of the brightest stars in the future of football. Or has he blown his chances completely?

He will but not for a few seasons. I like him. The thing is that santos is better attacking but Gibbs is better defensively.

Hello fellow gooners. I do not think this is a bad dilemma to have, do you? When Gibbs is fit we will have two very good left backs at Arsenal FC. It’s a nice luxury to have, in my opinion. Elz. Gooner till I die

Well we could use them both. Santos could make an interesting left-sided attacker with Gibbs behind him. Especially when Gervinho is away in January.

His future depends on the patience of the gaffer. He has been injured at the wrong time. This was his big moment at the beginning of the season, the manager had put his faith in him.
The pressure is on the manager to buy another left back as well so I am not sure how much time he has left.

I’d actually prefer Santos at left back as he exudes more confidence than Gibbs. Santos has better ball control, is a great standing tackler and more threatening moving forward. He’s typical Brazilian magic! Santos has played in Brazil, Turkey and now England. He has a wealth of experience playing in different leagues and his stats are as follows:

Career (Arsenal included) 199 games with 52 goals. Pretty impressive for a LB isn’t it? Not too sure about his assists stats though. Perhaps someone can help find this info. On the contrary, Santos does tend to drift too far forward which makes Song, Arteta and the back line work harder, so he can be a liability. Overall as Wenger has proven, he likes his 2 back flanks to attack and spread the midfield plays to wider areas. Mainly great against teams like Man City, Barca, Chelsea, Everton who all like to clog the midfield.

I like Gibbs for his pace, crossing abilities and potential, but the kid needs to eat a few hamburgers to get the weight and power levels up. We produced, in my opinion, the World’s best left back today in Cashley Cole. Fair enough he isn’t built much more impressively than Gibbs but Cole has a menacing style of play, “always in your face” as some of the world’s best forwards would often say. We need Gibbs to strengthen physically and develop more aggression in stopping players attacking. Right now, he’s still a work in progress and needs another year of regular football to improve and develop the toughness required.

Santos is definitely the pick for me. We have a current Brazilian International Vs a future England LB. GO FIGURE!

Yeah, Ramsey has the touch of magic, but he is too weak, that’s why he loose the ball too often. He need to work on his physical side, maybe loan him to Bolton or Stoke City would be good.Meanwhile we can try Old Rosicky or Old Benayoun to cover for his or Jack return.

  14. Big Gun says:

I’m still not so convinced by Gibbs, maybe because he hasn’t really had consistent starts and first team play. At the moment I think Santos is a very versatile player, his anticipation is excellent. He just lacks speed in his backtracking. Overall he is a good, experienced defender, clam and collected and does not blunder when under pressure.

From what I’ve seen of Gibbs, he isn’t bad at all. Haven’t really seen him make mistakes, just doesn’t do anything extraordinary. Santos is still my first choice.

santos will be 1st choice left back even if gibbs dose come back simply cause wenger loves an attacking team.

i think gibbs would be good as 2nd choice he will be 1st when jenkinson is 1st choice right back

He’s got skills and a nice cross but he needs consistent game time before we can make a valuable judgement as to his worth to the team.
