Winterburn – Van Persie can beat John Terry, but the Arsenal defence could lose it!
Former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn has shared some varied thoughts in Arsenal’s ability to defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Speaking to Goal.com, the ex-defender said, “Van Persie only needs half a yard to work the ball into a position where he can shoot at goal with his left foot, and I won’t be surprised if he gets the better of Terry this weekend”.
Indeed, Arsenal’s much-feared Dutchman is undoubtedly regarded as the biggest menace from the Blues’ perspective and he will certainly prove to be one of the most significant threats to their unbeaten home record this season so far. The fact that he has scored 10 goals in 13 away matches since his consecutive away goal record began last season does back this up tremendously.
Winterburn also felt that Walcott could be a key player in stopping attacks down the left flank, suggesting that “Walcott pins Cole back so the Chelsea full-back can’t bomb forward”. Whether arguably the best left-back in the world would be concerned about a player under the threat of losing his place in the team to an 18 year-old remains to be seen.
However, he was less positive about the defensive aspects of getting a result away from home this week. He described Song as a “strong, tenacious athlete” but pointed at his tendency to “switch off for a couple of seconds”, leading to the likes of “Lampard… putting the ball in the back of the net”. He was also critical of Mertesacker’s lack of speed and suggested that Djourou – if played at right-back – will struggle against Juan Mata.
It seems like a fair set of comments from the former Gunner overall, but he undoubtedly underestimated the strength of the Koscielny-Mertesacker partnership. The former played a vital role in the 3-1 defeat of Chelsea last season and dealt superbly with the threat of Drogba. Now that such a danger has been eliminated through suspension – and he has the ever- developing German alongside him – Chelsea look capable but not unbeatable.
