Woodgate story is a lie!! – Wenger
Over the weekend the tabloid ‘News of the World” ran a back-page spread linking Arsenal with a move for Tottenham’s walking injury – named Jonathan Woodgate. Arsene Wenger was a keen admirer of the player during his Leeds and Newcastle days but couldn’t stump up the cash when he went to Real Madrid.
Since then Woodgate has suffered injury after injury – his latest one a career threatening groin problem that has plagued him for over a year. He has only just made his comeback in a behind closed doors friendly last week.
This return seemingly got the rumour-mill turning and duly he was linked with a move from our neighbours in a bid to solve our injury hit defence.
Wenger rubbished the talk, saying:
“We were not after Woodgate, who I like as a player, but we are not after him,”
“That was not on our mind at all, [it was] completely out of the blue.”
I am sure a journalist is now sitting at home with a very red face after having his big back-page spread from the weekend completely rubbished with two sentences!
The official site seem to be hinting at no arrivals on deadline day, speaking on any potential deals he said:
“[The search is going] as slowly as I run at the moment. Nowhere near, we cannot say we are nowhere but we are nowhere near [a deal],”
“At the moment I’m not too confident. I look every day after Squillaci and Vermaelen as well as I can because I try to get positive vibes from Vermaelen.”
Typical. A month of hope that we will see a new face, come the end of that month, nothing.
The upcoming partnership of Koscielny and Djourou has been very encouraging – the stability offered by Szczesny is a massive plus too. However one injury and it all goes down the drain…

I genuinely don’t think we need to sign anybody else, 4 center backs with Song as a stop-gap measure should be plenty for any team. What would we do in a month if we signed another center back and both Squilaci and Vermaelen returned?

How abt the inter defender frm u.s.a. on loan? I thnk they hardly use him yet he is gud. Signing a c.b is hard, am sure and moreso with the others coming back it may be a destabilizer.

I watched that Cahill guy play against Chelsea last night. Please Wenger keep our money dont waste it on crap.We definitely need a player who can stand out for the big game and he was out of sorts.Lets wait till summer rather than waste money on another Squillaci.
