Would Wenger make a good poker player?

Posted on January 13, 2011 by admin

I was watching very closely the BBC interview with Arsene Wenger after last nights defeat to Ipswich, and considering the enormity of the defeat he certainly managed to keep a straight face for most of the two minutes. There were a couple of little twitches when i thought he was going to cry but he managed to immediately relax his muscles to continue with another valid answer. I would have been fuming!
A few years ago Professor Mark Griffiths, who specialises in the psychology of gambling, was asked which famous people he thought would be the best pokerstars poker players, and he named Wenger as being one of the most likely (along with Gordon Brown, Ben Elton and Katie Price) to be successful. But it seems to me that he is not quite so good a keeping his cool in the last couple of seasons.

After losing to Chelsea earlier this season, you could practically see the steam coming out of his ears, and the sadness in his eyes was like a poor dejected puppy that had been kicked by his owner once too often. And when Arsenal lost a couple of home games earlier in the season, he was even seen to throw things around the dugout in his frustration. That is not the sign of a cool customer….

Wenger also seems to be losing his ability to beat other managers down in the transfer market, and usually ends up losing the player rather than getting his opponent to back down. He famously said during the “Berbatov to Man Utd” saga, when Spurs and United were haggling over the price: “In the end, it’s a poker game,” he said “Who will be the winner, it’s always difficult to predict. But, from what I read, it’s £5million that is the difference and, at that level, £5million doesn’t make a difference any more.

“It usually finishes on August 31st with everybody going halfway, and everybody thinking they are the winner.”

But lately it always seems to be Wenger who ends up paying over the odds for rubbish players…..

Nah mate. I don’t think Wenger would be a very good poker player. In fact he’d be one of the worst poker players around. He’d be out bidded every time. Poker players need to be aggressive at times and Fergie would wipe the floor with him on that one. Keeping a straight face is just a part of the game

I think Arsenal are in need of some new ideas as wenger seems to have none,no plan B nothing to come off the bench and change the game, the twoo defenders he has bought are to say the least average ,arsenal need at least 2 centre backs a midfield player to help cesc and an out and out goalscorer ,the spine of the team is weak as is the attitude of some players who tend to go awol in games ,rosiky(dire) denilson(awful) arshavin not interested.at least 60 million needed to get this team winning anything soon, and can you see arsene spending that, time to bite the bullet arsene or let someone else have a pop.in arsene we trust (what rubbish you are deluded. a very hacked off Arsenal fan.

arsene, defintely used to be the hootest manager around before 2005, but since then hwo things change, but i gusses wih the money he makes as amanager may be its time for him to try other things, may be become a poker player and win something. As you pointed out he may win the best poker player of the decade in 2022,and return to managment in qatar world cup, managing france.

Denilson, Squillaci and Eboue are more than a threat to Arsenal rather than the opponent’s players. I hope some clubs will come to get them but it’s impossible to see Wenger will let them all go. Sucks.

I am a great supporter of AW. For all he has achieved in a remarkable career at Arsenal. I will continue to support him for as long as he is manager and beyond.
However, I am beginning to sense vibes that what happens to the team THIS SEASON may decide on his future at the Club.I get the impression that his concept of a fast, close-passing game is becoming under very close scrutiny by the Arsenal Board. The “one pass too many” has even been accepted by Fabregas who admitted that “it’s the way we have been taught”. There is, of course, time for change, but the signs are ominous. We shall see.

yes u all know better after the game … song for denilson chamakh for bendtner … whatever … football is at least 60 percent a psychological battle and if u saw this team … there was no spirit …now that;s a problem and yes u could argue that this is the managers fault but did u see our captain … what was that ? no one is perfect … get of ur high horses and be supporters rather than nagging childs always asking for fxxxxing candy ! wake up that;s football !

Dint watch the game but from what ive heard there’s nothing more one should expect from Bendtiner,Denilson and the short Russian who has no idea of the game but one looking in one position to score. It would be better if we let him go and find options though that cant happen in Jan.

    ALWAYS A GUNNER

Am very sure, Wenger has done his experiments on bendtner, arshavin and eboue. Let these buggers play at reserves or sell them now now. Bendtner is a spent force and arshavin should be warming the up to the end of sizon

  17. Gigi says:

Yep. AW has lost his cool at times, and yep, he has lost (at least this summer and mercato) the players he wanted, they are all gone to other clubs.

Sad but true as one James Hetfield would say.

Denilson is a waste of everything in my opinion. Bendtner cant put the ball where his mouth says. Arsha is losing his skill.

We need someone who can strike, and score, simple and plain. I saw some games from the Hnery era, we were not that prolific, but at least we scored.

And we need to stop conceeding, in those games too, we were not prolific, but our sheets were mostly…down to 0 goals!
